VIDEO: Bryanboy's March 2010 Vogue shoot + Bloggers vs. Journalists debate

Vogue.com video grab of Vogue spread featuring Bryan Boy and other style bloggers

Filipino blogger Bryanboy Yambao, 23, is featured alongside other style bloggers in the March 2010 Power Issue of American Vogue with Tina Fey on the cover.

Vogue.com calls them "the men and women who keep up on all things fashion 24/7": Bryanboy (bryanboy.com),Tommy Ton (jakandjil.com), Michelle Phan (michellephan.com), Garancé Doré (garancedore.fr), Mary Tomer (mrs-o.org), Yvan Rodic (yvanrodic.blogspot.com), Todd Selby (www.theselby.com), Hannelli Mustaparta (hanneli.com), and Catherine Kallon (redcarpet-fashionawards.com).

"I call them the usuals," says Bryanboy in the Vogue.com video, "the same people you see in fashion week that you interact with in Facebook and Twitter, kind of like a tight knit community." Kathryn Neale, Vogue contributing editor says, about the feature, "It's kind of like that trickle-up theory where they're on the streets noticing what's happening and so many points of view are interesting and worth looking into which is what we've been doing at Vogue."

The clip is aptly set to the song "We Are the Ones" by The Orion Experience, with lyrics that say "We are the ones that you wish would go away ( we're here to stay ). Yeah, we are the ones that are gonna run the world some day. We are the ones you can't control. We are the ones that won't be sold. We are the ones that you can't get to look the other way (we won't obey)," which could perhaps be the paean of bloggers everywhere amidst the current "Bloggers vs. Journalists" controversy.

In the past few weeks, fashion cyberspace has been inundated with stories like "Disgruntled Magazine Editors Are Tired of Bloggers Getting the Good Seats at Shows," and "Elle Editor Leads Backlash Against 13-Year-Old Blogger," spawned by   Tavi Gevinson, the 13-year-old behind the fashion blog Style Rookie who sparked a minor controversy when she sat at the front row at the Christian Dior Spring 2010 couture show wearing giant bow on her head, blocking the view of a Grazia editor sitting behind her.

Tavi, Bryanboy and other fashion bloggers were invited to a panel discussion on February 15 in New York on "The Future of Fashion Blogging" at the Evolving Influence Fashion Blog Conference hosted by the Independent Fashion Bloggers. "Tavi–clearly the blogger everyone was most excited to see–won coos and applause with almost every comment," said the New York Magazine website.

Actually, Tim Garcia lives in the plush condo allegedly bought with gov't money so he's complicit of the crime and benefited from it which makes him legally in trouble according to law.rnrnAnd straightener's is right. Anyone who reads bryanboy's blog will know that he couldn't care less about appearing in a website in a "cesspit of a country like the Philippines" (in bryanboy's own words)

We know, no one can touch Brian Boy, he won't even give a frigging deal if he appears in Spot.PH, much less mortals like us talk about him. He'll just dismiss us as some tin pot faceless usernames.gucci

An alleged sin of the father is not a sin of the son. One reason why Timothy Garcia is still employed by Marc Jacobs. Witch hunting is a Philippine sport. Not in the US unless you are running for public office. The justice system in the US is insulated from politics - and crabs. Think why Imelda got acquitted in NYC. Same reasons.
  • Really? Feb 23 2010 @ 11:24am Report Abuse
COA: Bryanboy's family actually can be obligated to reveal the source of their wealth because his father is in the military.
  • COA Feb 23 2010 @ 09:51am Report Abuse
igeramos, nobody is obligated to disclose the source of his/her wealth. In the country of thieves aka Philippines, if there will be full disclosure of wealth and its source, 80% of the top 500 richest families will go to jail.

Di ba nga anak siya ng general? Friend niya si Tim Garcia, who works for Marc Jacobs in NY, anak rin ng general na may kaso dito for plunder of millions.
  • igeramos Feb 23 2010 @ 02:14am Report Abuse
But Bryanboy is hiding things from us. His real identity and the source of his wealth. How can he afford those outfits, bags, first-class airline tickets, 6 star hotels and platinum credit cards? Someone had to pay for those? Don't tell me, he shops in Ukay ukay?
  • Tim Feb 22 2010 @ 11:13pm Report Abuse
BryanBoy opened a can of worms of the supposed to be high society of the Philippines. In a country where everybody is a social climber, that was news. The members of Manila's 500 thought that nobody could touch them especially from a member of Manila's 5Million. The Sooziehoppers and the Malu Fernandez' of the world felt like scared criminals when chikatime came into the picture. If you have nothing to hide, there is nothing to be scared about. Right BryanBoy?
  • chika Feb 22 2010 @ 03:50pm Report Abuse
they hate bryanboy because he's chikatime.

Some powerful groups still control the flow of information in the Philippines. Thanks to the internet.

If not for spot and BryanBoy's blog, I wouldn't have known about the BB Vogue shoot.

With all sincerity, I salute spot for being inclusive - there is real diversity here. Sometimes I can't follow the discussion regarding local movie stars when I read the multiple comments of a crowd that came out of hibernation. But that is what diversity is all about.

I choose #5 and at the same time the Manila circle is a snobbish group and if you don't belong to their circle you are out. Think OFW's. They make it abroad but not in Manila. Let me repeat what others said: If they make it in NYC who cares about the small voices in the boonies...
  • igeramos Feb 22 2010 @ 08:35am Report Abuse
@Ryan, you said, Up to now, nobody mentions BryanBoy’s Vogue. I say, choose one reason why:
    1. They hate BryanBoy,
    2. They're intimidated with the power he yields.
    3. Some turn a blind eye and let BrianBoy get away with what he's doing and at the same time, the same people who hate him are deadma.
    4. Because for them, it's not worth to lift a finger or a fly swatter to kill a pretentious bangaw.
    5. BrianBoy does not exist in their consciousness. Or he's not visible in Manila's fashion radar at all. No matter how big he is, he burned so many bridges in the local fashion scene.
    6. Being BrianBoy, why would he fraternize with with people who are not in his league?
  • Ryan Fernandez Feb 22 2010 @ 12:43am Report Abuse
You don't trust Manila-based fashion (kuno) bloggers. I agree. Up to now, nobody mentions BryanBoy's Vogue shoot.
  • Elsa Klench Feb 21 2010 @ 01:49pm Report Abuse
Bryanboy does not endorse H&M. In fact, H&M mentions BryanBoy and H&M receives the favor. It is the other way around. BryanBoy provides free advertisement which they would spend anyway if through Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Town and Country, etc.

BTW, you will see the cliqueish attitude in Manila now. BryanBoy will never mention Rajo in his blog and Rajo and other local fashionistas will never mention BryanBoy even if this is MAJOR achievements in the fashion world.
  • igeramos Feb 21 2010 @ 01:38pm Report Abuse
Bryanboy pala. Actually, Bryanboy hasn't done anything for the country, except for being Bryanboy.

His talent is akin to Leonardo di Caprio's role in the film "Catch Me If You Can" and his life story is similar to the telenovela "Rubi", now being shown on local TV.

Don't know why this Finnish company still use BryanBoy as an endorser, they don't realize the damage he can do to their brand.

The more urbanized Westerners will use "i" instead of "y". Just like in Linda for the city girls and Lynda for the country girls.

Great piece igeramos. But that's you. You don't know other people's motives or what is inside their hearts. Having said that, let us all be happy that our country, poor as it is, has produced a BryanBoy, an Arnel Pineda, a Chat, a Rajo, a Charice, etc. etc. etc.

BTW, BryanBoy will love you for using "i" instead of "y" for his name. The "y" in his name is the only proof that he is not Westernized after all.

Poor Tommy Ton will have an eating disorder after he sees the photos...
  • igeramos Feb 20 2010 @ 05:17pm Report Abuse
Hey Tessa, I was being cute. I know who Brian Boy is. He may look like a stick insect but in most fashion books he's considered fat.

To be a fashionista, one should be at least 15 years-old, size 0, 24-inch waistline and having some sort of an eating disorder.

The fashion industry is a very cruel industry. Once you reached the age of 25, you're over the hill. Unless of course you're Anna Wintour.

Speaking of crab mentality, Brian Boy is on the top of a very very tall basket that no one, but no one in this country can top his act. So I feel sorry to those local crabs, he's one big alimango with matching big sipit that wouldn't end up in Kamayan.

Envy doesn't even figure in the equation because no matter what people do or say to discredit him, his dermatologist made sure that his skin is impregnated with teflon. Also, he's so loaded that he pays his bills with kryptonite.

We know, no one can touch Brian Boy, he won't even give a frigging deal if he appears in Spot.PH, much less mortals like us talk about him. He'll just dismiss us as some tin pot faceless usernames.

The Internet is his playground, an empire he continually builds. But the Internet can also be a forum where ordinary people like you and me can voice out our dissatisfaction.

So why do we have do we have to agree to everything what he says? This planet would be a boring place if we accept everything people shove down our throats-- from government policies to religious dogma and that includes fashion and what we choose to wear.

This is not envy, or crab mentality. This is about having a voice, albeit small, like yours, it's still a voice.

    Thank God for the internet.

As for Bryan Boy, I'm actually happy for him. In fact, I just bought a copy of Vogue to read about those fashion bloggers.

Nevertheless, he's still fat and visible from Google Earth.

The Manila fashion bloggers gave more prominence to MOLESKIN. BryanBoy was not even mentioned except here @ spot. Kudos to spot.

Apparently, hindi feel ng Manila fashionistas si BB dahil hindi nila ka-clique. Jealousy? Envy?
  • Elsa Klench Feb 20 2010 @ 12:49pm Report Abuse
Watch this clique culture in Manila especially in the fashion industry. This surfaced during the Arcy vs. Rajo brouhaha.

I am carefully following all the fashion bloggers in Manila. So far, not one of them mentions the BryanBoy Vogue shoot considering that this is a MAJOR feat in the fashion industry. This should have been in the radar screen next to the Chad Almarvez and Rajo story.
  • Tessa Feb 20 2010 @ 12:44pm Report Abuse
Hey igeramos, you were talking about the wrong person. That was Tommy Ton of Jak and Jil. Bryanboy is payat na payat.

I was at H&M for my President's Day shopping spree last weekend. BryanBoy was mentioned again in the Spring/Summer 2010 brochure. Kudos to BryanBoy!

I know BB has his faults but let us give credit where credit is due. He has achieved what every Pinoy fashionista blogger, insluding a graduate of Parsons, aims for - to be invited for front seats during fashion shows and called by his/her first name by the top designers of the world. Imagine, Marc Jacobs has even created a bag inspired by BB.

Like Rajo, he has been an object of hate too by the Filipino crabs. Let's face it, NY is NY. When you are in the Big Apple, the tiny voices in Manila does not carry any weight at all!!!

Brian Boy is so fat I could see him in Google Earth.
