Manila's Who's Who was there at Hermès

Published: Mar 12, 2010 - 8:15am

The 173-year-old luxury brand Hermès formally opened its first boutique in the country at Greenbelt 3 in Makati City on March 10. The two-storey boutique houses bags, luggage, clothing, footwear, jewelry, watches, home and baby articles, diaries, leather goods, and, of course, the coveted Birkin bag.

After guests perused the goods at the Greenbelt 3 corner store, they were led trough an Alice in Wonderland-inspired maze-like path that went all the way to the Ayala Museum where the real party began.

Among the Spot-ables, Manila's crème de la crème of all ages oozed into the affair, some proudly flashing their Hermès: Georgina Wilson, Divine Lee, Borgy Manotoc, Ornusa Cadness, Bea Soriano, Teresa Herrera, and Tweetie de Leon Gonzales; , Lizzie and Kit Zobel, Tessa Prieto Valdes, Katrina Tantoco Lobregat, Hindy Weber Tantoco, Bea Lucero Lhuiller, Camille Mathay, Mai Kaufman Audrey Tan Zubiri and Kaye Tinga. Also spotted were   Tim Yap, Ruffa and Raymond Gutierrez, Pops Fernandez; Sherilyn Reyes and Angelu de Leon.

Bad taste to be displaying and flauntng birkin bags, when there are that don't have food to eat. Only in the philippines do they have no shame. it is colonial mentaility ppl don't even realize how embarassing it is to have nannies following your every move. it's modern day slavery. how these ppl sleep at night i don't know.

Joseph, if they can afford one for themselves, by all means let them have it. And since when were rich people obliged to philanthropic work? I'd want a Birkin or Kelly myself. I am not a bad person because of that and neither are they. Fashion isn't fair, no.
  • Priyanka Chopra Apr 14 2010 @ 01:00am Report Abuse
I am saving up for a birkin. I haven't paid my rent for almost a year now and I was forced living with my parents again. All for the love of Hermes (uhr-mey.) I ride the jeepney everyday. I've lost weight too. It's the best alternative to Chinese diet pills.

I can't wait to see the reactions on the faces of the people in MRT when they see me sporting my ostrich Birkin. If the price increases, I'll settle for the Kelly instead.

    @ anonymous

jealousy has nothing to do with "everyone"'s collective disgust for ultra-rich lifestyles, especially in a massively third-world country. get it right.

I remember when Gretchen Barreto was asked if she went to the launch of LV in Greenbelt: I dont go sa launching kasi people who attend those things are the people who likes to get gifts lang. I went on the first day of opening kasi thats the day where serious buyers do our stuff =)

Everyone suggesting that they might as well donate that money to charity instead of spending on a Birkin are just deathly jealous of how they can't afford one themselves, so they make these absurd moralist statements to mask their envy.
  • Soozy Mar 17 2010 @ 02:01pm Report Abuse
Birkin's quota for one year was achieved in one night. Oh, I love this country.

  • Marj Mar 16 2010 @ 01:04am Report Abuse
To my mind, there is no envy for the rich. If you have it, flaunt it. Why not? The Filipinos have mastered the art of social climbing anyway.

The issue is how the rich people in the Philippines, a majority of them lawbreakers, continue their business with impunity. You don't need to do a lifestyle check to detect that the source of money is illegal (like Mikey Arroyo and other wives of politicians).

In the US, generally speaking, there is no hatred for the rich because they know that the law is applied evenly. Think Leona Helmsley and Martha Stewart.

Do you think a member of Manila's 500 can land in jail even for 4 weeks? I don't think so.

Hahahahaha ayan, korek si monocle diyan. oo nga naman, hmph! Inggit lang kayo dahil never kayong ma-i-invite sa mga sosyalang ganyan hahahahahaha
  • monocle Mar 15 2010 @ 12:26pm Report Abuse
nature watcher, you can't blame the Tantocos for putting up a luxury stores in the Philippines. Luxury brands have a market and whatever you think, the luxury market provides jobs to filipinos. First, they provide landlords like Ayala with rent. Second, they provide construction workers who build their stores with salaries. Third, they give jobs to their sales people. Fourth, when they advertise, they give jobs to editors, printers, and advertising agencies. Filipinos will find ways to satisfy their luxury fix. They will fly out and spend their money abroad. I'd rather they spend it here. And please don't generalize...alangan naman Hermes put a sign that says only people who earned their money through honest means allowed to buy.
  • monocle Mar 15 2010 @ 09:56am Report Abuse
Capitalism works that way. You work hard, you get to buy whatever you want. You can also give it to a charity of your choice. Or you can give it to your dog. Remember, you don't have to be rich to donate to charity so Spotters who keep complaining about how rich people spend, I do hope you practice what you preach.

Why is it that when you attend social functions abroad (NY Fashion Week, Oscar's After-Party, etc.), you don't feel the air of snootiness during the affair.

Why is it in Manila, the aroma of pretense permeates the place right away for events like this.

Is it because, except for the Ayalas, the source of wealth for a majority of the guests is questionable (read illegal)?
  • Frida Giannini Mar 15 2010 @ 12:07am Report Abuse

These celebrities and rich people just add to the "guest" list of the so called top 400 families of the Philippines to make it look good. What is shameful is the family of the owners of this store have the audacity to promote themselves as philantrophists and then go and set up this shop here in a so-called "poor" country outght to be ashamed of themselves....they tear up the countryside, bulldoze rainforests to put up more and more subdivisions and resorts, and siphon all the drinking water given to us from God for free, and take from acquifers and rivers to sell it back to us at about P1,500 per home at the minimum, rob our mines, spill mercury and support coal fired plants to destroy our reefs is appalling.....whatever little they do to the environment doesn't eradicate the billions they get from destroying the mountains, streams and forests.
  • angelbyday Mar 14 2010 @ 08:15am Report Abuse
nah. it doesnt follow that if you buy such ultra-expensive stuff, you are unquestionably, undoubtedly, irrevocably insensitive and anti-poor. some of them, maybe. but not all. if a hard-working you can reward yourself with a nice bag, not so much to flaunt it the way a gretchen barretto does, but because you think you deserve the best quality there is, i dont see anything wrong with that.

they have the money. you dont. get over it.
  • Ryan Fernandez Mar 13 2010 @ 03:12pm Report Abuse
If there is anybody who should have been invited to this affair, it is no other then Jinkee or Aling Dionisia.

Ang pera ay galing sa pagsisikap at tagumpay ni Pacman.

A majority of the other guests, the source of money is either corruption or some criminal act. Trust me, this is the Philippines where a majority of the rich people are criminals but go scot free.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong even if Jinky buys 100 Hermes bags.

I have a problem with high profile guests like Mathay, Tinga, and Zubiri. I will bet my neighbor's mansion that a part, if not all of the money, paid to buy a Hermes bag is taxpayers' money.

BTW, talking about insensitivity, the First Gentleman was spotted at the San Francisco Airport this morning. He was on his way to Dallas for the Pacquiao fight. He was traveling with a coterie of alalays. Anybody who will tell me that he is spending his personal money needs a brain check. Looters all!

I'm sure if you were a millionaire you'd buy Hermes too, along with other luxury goods you think you deserve. How come if it's ok if Jinky buys 10 Hermes bags but not if the alta sociedad does? Their money is as good as hers. Why is it ok if she prefers to buy those bags instead of giving them away to all the poor people she once knew?
