Top 10 It Girls

Trina Pineda | Published: Feb 26, 2011 - 8:09pm

7.  Tricia Gosingtian

Japan-obsessed Tricia Gosingtian dabbled in fashion by getting occasional modeling gigs, and mostly by snapping shots of her friends from school. In 2007, she began shooting for a teen magazine and has since skyrocketed to fame, even putting together a “dark fairytale” themed editorial for Preview’s 150th issue. Aside from Tricia’s burgeoning career in photography, the Ateneo graduate is also known around the world for being one of Lookbook.nu’s top 10 fashion inspirations, a top blogger on Tumblr, and a “style icon” on Chictopia. Endorsements follow Tricia wherever she goes—most recently, she has become an official brand ambassador for Forever21, and has worked with Bayo and Heima as well. Her biggest success, however, was being picked as one of Tumblr’s chosen 24 bloggers (and the only one from Asia) sent to cover New York Fashion Week.

This is like a PR work. Way to go, spot.ph. What's next? The top ten It Boys in the metro? The top 10 It Gays in the metro? (Just in case I get accused of being politically incorrect -- Disclaimer: I meant no offense there. I have gay friends, it's just a general query.)rnrnIf only Tim Yap and the son of that corrupt Gen Garca -- Tim Garcia -- were girls, they would have been included in the list. Yechhh.rnrnMaybe, just maybe, @Timothy is either of these two Tims? Hmmm. Just thinking out loud. :)

I quote "Beauty. Brains. Breeding. Bucks. Billboards. The 5 Bs sum up the new generation of media-savvy, super creative, multi-hyphenated trendsetters who dominate not just print and web, but are taking over TV screens and the slew of billboards scattered all over the metro."rnrnSana hindi nyo nalang nilagayan ng adjectives. All of these girls don't necessarily possess all the aforesaid traits. Most have Beauty. Maybe one of them has the Brains (and I mean cerebral like IQ wise lest others speak of their "artsy" profession). Some of them have Breeding, all of them have the Bucks, most of them have the Billboards.

I'd like to see a list of girls who are actually full filipino instead of always being bombared with half pinays. While i loved the morena list you guys had recently and also agree that yes these girls are beautiful, it would be refreshing to see role models that represent the majority of the philippine population instead of blinding us with what the media considers beauty. It also isn't very realistic when some of these people get their skinned whitened every week.

to be honest. rnrnLiz Uy would never pass off as pretty or beautiful in any culture. She looks very common, her face is alien like and she's got a big face for her body.rnrn Her sense of style is bland and boring. She's always wearing black just to be safe and that tells so much about her lack of creativity and her styling sensibility.rnrnShe wouldn't be in this list if she ddnt hook up with PNOY.rn

Si Alodia? IT GIRL?rnOo, internationally known nga siya. Pero dahil yun sa cosplay. Nakita niyo na ba siya manamit? Korny kaya style niya. Di tulad ng iba sa list na talagang iniidolo ng mga tao for their sense of style/fashion taste. Eh si Alodia, sino man gagaya ng costumes niya? Syempre mga cosplayers din! Kasi di naman siya wearable anytime, anywhere.

Guys guys guys! Calm the ef down.. Lets not point our finger to these girls.. Its not their fault to be called the it girl of spot.. Its the media! Spot.ph the problem in our society is that we depend so much with media that sometimes they give viewers wrong perception. Like sa hk bus shootout who was one to be blame by hk? Edi media ng pinas! Also iam really bothered by the new commercial of mcdo with this young girl courting a young guy? I mean adult viewers can understand it as cute and funny but my god if kids view it iba na sympre nasa isip nila. So for my suggestion to spot.ph next time you nominate someone please do it how this country rose out from communism to democracy.. Let the people vote!

@ da 5 Ps:rnrnYour list is completely thoughtless, racy, and absurd. Why are you mocking peasants? Peasants have more traits to look up to than all these girls combined as they contribute to Filipino society, and they work hard to the bone and make resourceful decisions to send their kids to school. That's brains and breeding for you.rnrnOn one hand, I agree that these women are indeed "it girls". They set the trend, but as trends always do, they eventually decline and lose their luster. It's just a shame that they get more attention than Filipinas who really have it made to deserve recognition for initiating social change in media.

@female_expat:rnrnrnBeauty - Maybe but not all ladies featured are even Authentic Filipino or Asian ladies. Without prejudice or discrimination, what's wrong with Venus Raj? She is not authentic Filipino but she is authentic Asian. Anyone can agree with me ?rnrnHuh? They all are Filipino! What are you saying?rnrnBrains - none of them are academically outstanding. None of the ladies finished a degree whether local or international.rnrnReally? I know Georgina finished a degree both here and abroad, she studied and Ateneo, and is a consistent dean's lister. Alodia and Tricia also graduated from Ateneo.rnrnrnBillboards - probably, the ladies wouldn't be there if they have not appeared in any billboardsrnrnAs a rule of thumb, IT girls are considered "unique", "one of a kind", " can command income". rnrn--> This is not the definition of an IT GIRL. And the main reason why they are featured in the first place is because THEY HAVE APPEARED ON ADVERTISEMENTS. That's the main point of being an it girl.rn
  • porcupinegurl Mar 06 2011 @ 09:58pm Reply Report Abuse

Sad to say that most of you don't know what an IT GIRL'S definition is. It's not contributing to society, whoever their exes were doesn't even matter. The fact that they grace covers of magazines, billboards and are hugely popular is what it is. So wag kayo magagalit and magsasabi na maraming iba diyan na mas karapat-dapat. Kasi sa totoo lang, these girls have had a lot of media coverage talaga at yun lang ang point ng pagiging it girl.

@ jomar - The desired effect has been achieved. You have shown what you truly are. Well, you took your jolly time to come up with a fancier retort than the one you first threw at me. Or are you using someone else to type in the 2nd response? rnrnYour attempt to come up with a much clever "acronym" is but a feeble failure of a feeble life. I bet you really got riled up when I called you what you really are that you hurried to type it. Such is the alacrity of thought that only a Filipino peon of crab mentality. I bet you took your good time to consult a dictionary first before constructing your carefully constructed but crude sentences. rnrnAnyway, as for my "supposed wealth", let's play along with your presumptions. Hell yeah! I love being rich! I'm happy getting things & doing things nobody else can have or do. I like securing my future & insuring my family's welfare with the money I have. By golly! I'm happy! I'm happy I'm not poor of means & spirit like all these "envious crabs" who try to bring my success & the success of others to their level of misery. What right do you have to do that? I achieved my success & under no circumstances do you have a right to get a piece of it. Why? If you were successful, you wouldn't such "crab treatment" done to you. rnrnThat's what envious people are anyway. Miserable. Your hypocritical, melodramatic & overused excuse to justify the virtue of poverty (or rather your poverty) is a staple of Filipino TV dramas & the mind-set of beggars. They're plain miserable. That's the reason why this country is miserable. It is full of people like you. It's a pity. Really. And I think I should pity you, JO-MAR... But I have little sympathies for "crabs".rnrnAnyway, to make this short & as I have said, the first to lose his/her/its temper loses the argument. You certainly take the cake JO-MAR. But if you're complaining about the acronym I gave you, here's a new & more appropriate one: Jealous, Obnoxious, Malicious And Retarded.rnrnHave a nice day.

@ timothy rnrnMy IT girl definition is not based on my personal standards. Hollywoods current IT girls are, Anne Hathaway, Katherine Heigl, Natalie Portman, etc... you dont have to get an Oscar award to be an IT girl but at least something of an achievement to reach that status.rnrnThe 3 ladies Anna, Natalie and Katherine are not even flashy and over hype ladies. You dont see these ladies in every magazine cover but they are "IT" girls.rnrnThe ladies featured in article are just the Kardashians type in Hollywood. Dont get me wrong, the Kardashians have media, fame and money, the Kardashians have reach sales of over $65 million in 2010, but the Kardashians are not being categorized as "IT Girl" in Hollywood.rnrnI am sure the Philippines have a lot of ladies to come up for the "IT" list.rnrnAnd yes I am an expat and yes I dont watch local TV and in fact I just joined this forum because it came up with my google search "makati + hangout".rnrnSo cut the crap, we are all entitled to criticize and pass ones opinion. And it seemed that you like to belittle in this blog. What's the point? What do you gain from it? There are ways to pass your view without the nasty and deprecating rhetoric.rnrn@are you joking? rnrnSo what's wrong with Charice, she has achieved something, she landed in billboard. She has achieved more than combining the list of this article's IT girls' list. So far Charice is the biggest Philippines' export just as Nicole Kidman is Australia's biggest export. And I haven't stated she's an IT girl, it was a suggestion but she is close enough to be an IT girl.rnrn

No offense, but there are so many more stylish girls out there--since style seems to be what you based your choice on. Does going out with an actor, dating and styling the president make one awesome? And I have to agree with the rest, that was one tacky, over-photoshopped cover. Yikes:(

@ female_expat I beg to differ with your hastily & improvised composition. What do you mean "none of them finished"? Solenn, Alodia, Tricia are college graduates. That's a fact. You "IT girl" definition seems to be based on your personal standards & to those who have been bashing these girls lately. And you said it yourself: "I honestly dont know any of the ladies featured in the article because I dont watch local TV show." So? Should we take your word on it?rnrnYour research on these aspects are totally sloppy & subjective. Are you a genuine ex-pat or are you just making this up?

@ observer - Only you, "baby brain". Only you. I see you're resorting to the same old tired overdramatic ploy used by so many people in the Philippines (especially in their media) to illicit sympathy. That kind of tactic works with beggars, did you know that? Presenting your misconceived hardships will not always generate sympathy nor validity to your argument, not will it disguise the fact that you are a crab at the bottom trying to claw your way to the top by dragging others down to your miserable level. Well, this is real life, and i'll condescendingly talk this way to you because you have revealed your poor breeding & equally poor character. As the saying goes, the first one to lose his/her temper loses. So, with your pseudo German, I guess you're consenting defeat. Well... So long loser & proficient "crab".

Charice is everywhere, from Osaka to Los Angeles to Manila.rnrnThe term "IT" came from Hollywood, and in Hollywood "IT Girls" connotes "power", "talent", "wealth", "media" and "philatrophy". So far the 5 ladies featured have zero of "power", "questionable wealth" but may be "media".rnrnIf I will make the standard "Hollywood" style...the ladies featured are almost identical to that of Playboy Mansion ladies who now have their own "reality TV show" or the Kardashians "who have their own reality TV show and Fashion empire". But these ladies even in Hollywood are NO "IT girls". They are not invited in every distinguished events.rnrnThe Kardashians for example, they do not have the talent, but they have a great marketing strategies... In other words, the Kardashians are famous for being famous. It is a NO-Notable standing.rnrnIn Hollywood standard, the IT girls are Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, younger generation like Natalie Portman.rnrnIn other words, "IT girls" have accomplished something in their field.rnrnWhat do these 5 ladies accomplished so far, has any of them won any awards?rnrnThe above are just my 2 cents...so dont bash mernrnrn

I think all the arguments stem from spot's definition of an IT girl: beauty, brains, breeding, bucks, billboards. If the writer was really taking to heart her/his self-imposed definition, then half of them won't be on the list. Saab with breeding, has a billboard? Nah. Liz and Lauren beautiful? Really? I think that's why people are reacting negatively. Questionable definition, suspicious choices...

Websites churn out content based on hits. Meaning, they feature people and topics who bring in the hits. Otherwise, why would they? Meaning? it's the same people who get featured over and over again because the readers click on stories about them. Gets niyo ba? Bakit nila ifefeature if they don't bring in the hits?

based on spot & stylebible, it seems that the only people worth featuring are the same ones: Liz Uy, Isabella Daza, Solenn, Georgina Wilson -- now I really believe that Manila is such a small town, you'd think these were the only fashionable, smart, beautiful women in the city! just these 4-5? seriously?? rnrnI would hate to have my nieces/cousins announce that their ultimate dream is to be a stylist. rnrnKALERKY! rnrn

Scrap what I said about that.rnrnAng point ko lang is dapat hindi na pinapatungan ng kahirapan sa Pilipinas ang mga taong tulad nito. Wag na natin kwestunin kung bakit ganoon sila mabuhay. They're living their own elite lives. And they are celebrated for their beauty. Quebs.rnrnI'm just dividing the reality of the country to the celebreality of society. Wala akong problema with most of them. Pero hindi ba parang nakakadiri isipin na 1/3 ng mga babaeng yan eh nakipagpalitan na ng laway kay Richard G? Anne. Georgina and now Solenn... That's kinda messed up.rnrnBTW, these girls are only IT girls to a select group... the young generation. The social-networking generation. Middle to upper-crust and social climbing society. Ask your mom who Saab, Georgina is... they will have absolutely no idea.rnrnAlam lang nila Liz Uy... Hind ba yun yung naging gerlprend ni Noynoy. Anne Curtis... magandang babae pero ang taas ng shorts! Solenn... ung nasa isla.rnrnThese IT Girls are just relevant to SOME... The people like you and me who visit Spot.ph, or who hang out in Greenbelt on Fridays, or who have iPhones. So do not even bring up our third world country. That's almost irrelevant.

but come to think of it, it IS VERY DIFFICULT to be beautiful and have style. For the former, it takes genes and lots of luck. For the latter, it takes a lot of study (not money, I believe). There are very few stylish and beautiful people in the world and when you see them, well then they deserve to have a list. When I see myself in the mirror with my eyebags, thinning hair, wide hips and clothes that don't match--then yes, I realize, the world needs a list like this! Haha
  • monocle Feb 28 2011 @ 09:29am Reply Report Abuse

but isn't the point of being an it girl being famous for nothing? Well not nothing exactly. The minimum expectation is beauty and maybe a sense of style. When you are beautiful and study abroad, anak ka ng diyos! but since media--magazines, tv, the internet--aer very visual, the nature of such is to lionize beauty. no matter what we say about wanting substance, we really are attracted to what looks good, and if we were attracted to substance only, well then why is this article getting so much views and shares?

believe me- they are very catty amongst themselves. akala mo sila lang ang maganda/magaling sa mundo. If you only knew what i heard them say. Sa bagay, parang silang big fish in small pond HAHAHAHA

these so-called "It Girls", except for their faces, are all homogenous - commercial model turn aspiring actress, all friends of Raymond Gutierrez of Preview (surprise surprise) & seems like their only priority in life is partying. Am seriously worried that so many younger women idolize them - they need better models and aspirations than to just be a ... stylist?!

sana yung mga so-called "It girls" yung tipong 5Bs plus may social relevance pa. everyone on the list just seems so self-centered.

Boohoo Marj. So life is unfair. Tough luck. That's why you moved to the US where everyone is equal in the eyes of immigration whatever their skin color, accent, surname or school, yada yada yada. And you'll never be an It girl, ever. Napakasakit ano? Boohoohoo. Join Miss Universe na lang.

Blame the public. These girls will not get a following or get endorsements (which means they have a following) if the public did not like them. Anyone can promote anyone in the media but if the public does not bite, their careers will fizzle out quickly.

Yeah but this list isn't called "Beautiful Talented Pinays." It Girls have to have the 5 Bs.

the jing monis photo isn't isabelle daza.

Who represents Nita Negrita? If you are not a mix race kid, you are not "it". If you are a cocaine user or a daughter of a Pag-Ibig thief, you are "it". Aren't you glad you did not see Kris' name to add to the list of dysfunctional girls? Who do we blame? It is not only the gullible consumers but the media represented by spot.

The caption is incorrect, the girl beside Liz is not Isabelle Daza.

Solenn is really beautiful. She is deserving of the #1 spot.

Solenn's artworks suck but she's pretty. Georginas nose is crooked but always photoshopped. Liz is not pretty. The others on the list are not pretty either, and hohum, not so interesting. Many other beautiful, talented pinays. But Solenn is the best i guess

I love these girls! Solenn is the ultimate arts multi hyphenate. Wonder if there are others like Divine Lee though...she has combined business, fashion and media..most of the girs on the list are in fashion or showbiz.rnrn-wandergirlana.tumblr.com
