SPOT.ph rounded up a fresh list of titles that would make great couch companions during these rainy, stay-at-home days:

1. The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

lostsymbolnewWhat it's about: Protagonist Robert Langdon is back in a compelling thriller that will have the Harvard-educated symbologist following a trail of mysterious clues involving a ciphered pictogram in an important talisman, the Hebrew Key of Solomon.

Why we can't wait to read it: Brown kept us riveted with his past novels, Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, and we're excited to play detective along with the professor to solve a new thought-provoking puzzle. The novel, with an initial print run of 5 to 6.5 million copies, is the largest first printing for Random House, and a pretty strong indication that The Lost Symbol is expected to be as entertaining as the previous books.

Where to get it: Starting September 15, Tuesday, The Lost Symbol will be available at National Book Store, Fully Booked (price unavailable) and Powerbooks (hardcover edition at P1,499).

Pre-order at National Bookstore and get 20% off the P975 standard retail price and pay only P780.

Reserve a copy at Powerbooks until September 14 and get a Powerbooks cash coupon worth P100. Reservation fee is P500.

mga boring books naman ang lista, maybe except the book by malcolm gladwell. try reading books by ZANE (oozing with lots and lots of hot sex!), henning mankell books (suspense), also patricia highsmith novels (also suspense). stephen king , lisa unger, giles blunt, cecilia ahern books are very good and noteworthy.

i just finished reading this book..im not that impressed actually. although the story's interesting, it's not up there with angels & demons..and you know dan brown, the character closest to the protagonist is definitely the antagonist!:)

I don't get what msporciuncula wants to say or whatever. Not only is he/she bad in spelling, his/her grammar is worse. And yet he/she had the gall to critize Dan Brown? I mean, wow, get a life!Or better yet, go back to grade school!

I assumes not. . . niether promoting reading. . . requires you to read every publishing, Dan Brown's masterpiece are but lies, old lies, he is just a better lier than the former. I finished reading 'The Lost Symbol' last night.

It started out strong then it dipped terribly. It was a bit disappointing.

If I have to rank all Dan Brown novels from 1-5 (1 being the best and 5 the least):

    1. Angels and Demons
    2. Da Vinci Code
    3. Deception Point
    4. THE LOST SYMBOL
    5. Digital Fortress

Not everyone likes Dan Brown's work. I do but a number of my friends don't enjoy them as much. So Geekcritic, feel free to say what you wish. It's a free country, right?

    However, I will say this:

You're trying too hard, honey. There's a clear distinction between offering substantiated "critique" and flailing book snobbery around.
  • gossipmonger Sep 14 2009 @ 12:48am Report Abuse
uh-oh! looks like geekcritic has found an ally? haha. but vomit is right, at least spot is promoting reading. and i like dan brown. and to you geekcritic, maybe learn how to RESPECT.

reading your comment, it was okay naman but saying this: \"I hereby discredit your bookworm certificates.\"??? Whoa!

Oh, well. Maybe you really are a geek in its positive and negative meaning. :D peace! and happy monday!

Not the most inspired choices, people should know better than to criticize one's reading preference. Besides, at least Spot is promoting reading. Good job Spot!

Brown's success and popularity also acts as a security blanket. Right now, he should be dead or something.

I think TLS will be a hit. I'm buyin' it.
  • jenna Sep 12 2009 @ 12:25am Report Abuse
yes, geekcritic. this is an ad for national bookstore, fully booked and powerbooks. galing no?
  • tobin Sep 11 2009 @ 05:48pm Report Abuse
I smell a frikin geek fight. I'll buy Albom's book, btw
  • rotoscaper Sep 11 2009 @ 05:24pm Report Abuse
by the way, no offense on the Jesuit part. The Brownian on me just clouded my judgment, the same clouded way that made someone here point out that this article "may be an ad for National Bookstore."

but i still think Silas has a brother and he ain't happy.
  • Tom_Clancy Sep 11 2009 @ 05:09pm Report Abuse
i would have to burn my card collection first before buying #8. Holy Hell.
  • rotoscaper Sep 11 2009 @ 05:00pm Report Abuse
geekcritic, you a Jesuit or something? Are you Silas' brother or something?

Dan Brown's Da Vinci and Angels are actually good. You should also read Digital Fortress--It's a masterpiece.

Dan Brown may not have the most followers in the lit world but he's not a bad writer.
  • geekcritic Sep 11 2009 @ 04:13pm Report Abuse
On second thought, maybe this is an ad for National Bookstore. I now understand.
  • geekcritic Sep 11 2009 @ 04:12pm Report Abuse
I'm happy with most of the choices, but Dan Brown? Really?

Every good writer knows that Brown is a very bad writer. His books are replete with 2d characters that have little or no motivation at all (there is no back-grounding for the characters), they sometimes act st*p*d, puzzles are so obvious you wonder just when the characters (experts!) will solve them, changing description of settings (Da Vinci Code and the Pentagon church desc. of Langdon seeing 7 knights. 2 pages after he says: one knight is really buried in a tomb), and passing off shoddy research for scholastic work.

Oh please Spot. Really the first book you want to read?

I hereby discredit your bookworm certificates.
  • yorickbrown Sep 10 2009 @ 12:17pm Report Abuse
I'll be happy with the Dan Brown and Neil Gaiman books. Those will be more than enough to tide me over.
