GMA runs up $20,000 tab at Le Cirque in New York

Published: Aug 8, 2009 - 12:08am

Le Cirque

Unmindful of the global recession, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her large entourage from the Philippines ran up a $20,000 (P1 million) dinner tab at Le Cirque, a world-famous French restaurant in New York, reports The New York Post in its Page Six section on August 7. The hefty bill included several bottles of expensive wine.

The New York Post also mentioned that Arroyo's former comptroller of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Carlos Garcia, was found guilty earlier this year of perjury for misdeclaration of his assets and liabilities in 2000. His two sons Juan Paulo and Ian Carl were arrested in the US for smuggling $100,000. His other son Tim Mark Garcia, recently appointed head of public relations for Marc Jacobs, also faces  extradition charges in the Philippines.

Garcia, his wife and three sons have been charged with plunder, for allegedly illegally amassing more than P300 million during the former General's active military service, reports  the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement website.

Here's the "theoretical breakdown of the bill" based on Le Cirque's menu and wine list as posted by Manuel Quezon III in his blog quezon.ph:

sino ba ang nagsiboto sa mga gahaman na yan. kailangan ng mga pilipino na ang kapalit ng boto nila ay kahirapan para din sa kanila. madali kasing mauto, mabigyan lang ng 1 kilong bigas iboboto na kaagad, mga bobo rin kasi, dapat pukpukin sa ulo para matauhan.

Even thou i am still 11yrs old i am very disapointed on what PGMA did in that Food Chain.. Here in the City of IloIlo many people and families are suffering from hunger... then death is waiting for them... so if PGMA just eat on a McDo or Jollibee food chain ... She's just using her place for her own sake... i am just a kid but i am saying this because i am also experiencing these thing's some-times.. Hope many people be renewed!

Hay nako.. Kaya mas nakakawalang gana magbayad ng tax dahil jan e..

Sabi ni Remonde: ". . . alangan namang pakainin ang Presidente sa HotDog Stand." Akala ko ba pang-masa si Gloria. Si Obama nga ay siya mismo ang bumili ng sandwiches sa McDonald (?). What's wrong with a hotdog stand?

no president has ever been jailed for life after committing massive corruption. this is a very tragic reality for the philippines. the leading candidate for the presidential post has a debt of gratitude to pay to GMA after the government purchase some of his properties. the next leading candidate is the vice president and obviously he will pardon GMA of he is part of the grand theft. next year GMA exits the presidency with her million at swiss accounts intact. it is tragedy repeated again and again.
  • andre benedicto Aug 12 2009 @ 08:32am Report Abuse
someday, people in government service ( pigs) will
have to pay for their obvious corruption. when will this happen? it all depends on the filipino people if they will elect a president whose values cannot be compromised and who is determine to jail them.

Geez...how can some people be so vulnerable.. ?? 0.o -- First of all the quantities of the food ordered is a speculation only... uhh... as the article reads : “theoretical breakdown of the bill” - this bill is over exaggerated..

This issue is simply propaganda to anger the Filipino people. No wonder the Philippines does not move forward.. this is the ultimate display of CRAB MENTALITY. You people will yak at anything just to bring another person down...

And with that I think whoever sits on the president's chair will always be faced with gossip, intrigue, and crab-mentality-yakking from the filipino people. Because everybody wants a piece of the cake...

Might as well file a complaint on the other filipinos who spend lavishly on shopping, cars and houses in the US-- imagine.. all the OFW money combined could feed the whole country....

Jesus! some Filipinos are so pathetic. Tell you what...just work your @$$ off and earn your own cash that way you guys can also afford such luxury and stop complaining about other people's good fortunes.

To settle the issue all they have to do is to have Representative Romualdez produce a credit card slip of the charge. If he did pay for the meal, then no one can really complain, since he is a wealthy man and can do anything he wants with his money.

as a citizen of this beloved country of ours, i'm tired....i'm disappointed and i'm on the verge of putting a curse on all these people who has no affection to our people and country....but as a christian and someone who continuously prays for guidance amidst trials and hardships, let's just put our trust in GOD that all of these evil will be put to an end and HIS reign will be back on our country.....

this is a shameful news that the people from the government would spend extravagantly for food.i work as a doctor in the government hospital and everyday i see a lot of unfortunate sick Filipinos who couldn't afford even their fare going to the hospital.so by the time they reach the hospital, they are near death.at least have some conscience before spending.instead of trips abroad, why not go to slum areas and see what the Filipinos really need.don't think of yourselves only.for once try not to be selfish.

The main food that were ordered were okay except for the wine, caviar and champagne, too extravagant talaga but if the HOST was the one who paid the BILL okay lang ,that is his prerogative however, if the BILL was shouldered by GMA eh 100% included yun sa expenses ng trip ng Presidente eh MAKAPAL TALAGA at SOBRA NA.

  • Lolit Sunglao Aug 10 2009 @ 03:28am Report Abuse
No big deal about it. I am pretty sure the who invited was the one who shouldered the bill.
It will be in bad taste kung hindi and Host ang nagbayad.

Imagine $ 20,000.00 in one night only.
Eh maraming naghihirap at nagugutom na tao sa Pilipinas.

Okey din naman kung KKB sila.Kanya kanyang bayad, which typical for the Pilipino culture, except for the foreign guest that were invited.
If it was not paid by the HOST and not KKB, nakakahiya naman HALATANG ang mga kasama sa Party ni GMA ay mga FREE LOADER...At kung kakandidato ang mga iyan sa 2010,dapat wag IBOTO kasi alam na natin ang mga UGALI nila diba?

Our representatives are so sophisticated and worldly that one of New York's finest restaurants fails to impress. One could barely remember the restaurant--she ate at so many restaurants during the trip. Another claimed it wasn't very fashionable and the food just OK. And who are we to disbelieve when Press Sec. Remonde claims it was just a simple late dinner and everyone shared? The story keeps changing, just like the bags of cash at the Palace.
  • Dr. Lolita T. Sunglao Aug 10 2009 @ 12:26am Report Abuse
It is okay if they pay their own dinner, whoever they were in the company of the President, except the foreign guests that were invited.

So as not to overspend the money of the Filipino people, KKB always works, para hindi naman masasabi na sila ay free loader, diba?

1 million pesos is the annual food budget at the Pangarap Shelter for Street Children which feed about 100+ children x 3 meals per day, which Gloria manage to blow away easily in just one evening.

Little wonder she's no in a hurry to come home.

Can you believe NGO's like the Pangarap Shelter are taxed heavily by the government? And the tax that is supposed to be enjoyed by the children, they blow it out on a Php 1M gourmet dinner? Shame on you Gloria.
