Mars Ravelo's family breaks silence on Carlo J. Caparas award

Published: Aug 17, 2009 - 6:56pm

The Darna creator's family has released a statement about Carlo J. Caparas' National Artist Award, declaring him "underserving of the National Artist title."

Read the full statement below:

CJC: The Man That He Is Not

Revered
Right now, the late Cory Aquino is the most revered person in our nation. Opposite this, Carlo Caparas probably is the most ridiculed and reviled.

Even before this National Artist brouhaha, as children of the late Mars Ravelo, we've long been observing the moves of this man in silence. Until Manoling Morato, Caparas' patron and staunch supporter, started wagging that notable tongue of his against our father. Now, we're breaking that silence.

Komiks King

Thru dubious press releases, Carlo Caparas proclaimed himself the Komiks King. A title which, we know Caparas very well knows, belongs to Mars Ravelo. Mars Ravelo earned it thru the merits of his work. It's a title that grew on him thru the years. It has become synonymous with his name. One day, Caparas, brazenly grabbed it for himself. Just like that. And it's not even up for grabs.

Messiah
The Komiks Caravan of Caparas was aimed to discover new talents in komiks writing and illustrating. And more ambitiously, it aimed to resurrect the dying if not the already dead komiks industry. According to one of Caparas' series of press releases in an afternoon tabloid, the vacuum he left in the komiks industry took a heavy toll on the industry. The absence of his greatness and highness in the komiks industry caused the industry its very life.

Later, after the announcement of his noble act of resurrecting the komiks industry, about four comics strips in the Philippine Daily Inquirer were cancelled to give way to his own diario novela.

Meritorious
Next came the various awards. Caparas becomes multi-awarded. He was even conferred a peace prize award (we hope not for his massacre movies), together with a pool of international dignitaries as co-awardees including a former Philippine president.

Morato is the president of the foundation which conferred the award.

Komiks Legend
One day, one of our siblings texted us: Dad to be given an award at Malacañang tomorrow at 11 am. Sino ang pupunta?

Huh? Did we read right? An award from the palace and we were just advised the night before? We were not even given enough time for the dry cleaner. Did they really want our presence there?

And then we learned that together with Mars Ravelo, Tony Velasquez, Larry Alcala, and Francisco Coching, Caparas is also to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Merit. Seeing the line-up, we can hear ourselves singing (again) with Ate Isay: Alin, alin, alin ang naiba. Isipin kung alin ang naiba...

We decided, without second thought, not to go to the palace to receive the award on our father's behalf. Not only because it sucks of insincerity but seeing the dark side of it, our father, together with the other honorees who are all komiks legends, is being used to elevate Caparas into their league. Caparas may be legendary, but that's another story.

National Artist
Another text from another sibling: Caparas declared a National Artist

Everything becomes crystal clear.

Director Par Excellence
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 07/31/2009 11:09 AM, 'Manoling' defends Caparas' Nat'l Artist Award

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 07/31/2009 11:09 AM, 'Manoling' defends Caparas' Nat'l Artist Award

The Most Prolific Komiks Novelist
Kaya ba nila 'yan? Nagawa ba 'yan ni Mars Ravelo? Hindi. Si Carlo lang talaga ang nakagawa n'yan kaya he deserves the award.
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 07/31/2009 11:09 AM, 'Manoling' defends Caparas' Nat'l Artist Award

Wow!

The Father of The Komiks Industry's Rebirth
May caravan pa siya sa buong Pilipinas at his on expense. Sino ang nakagawa ng ganyan sa kanila?
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 07/31/2009 11:09 AM, 'Manoling' defends Caparas' Nat'l Artist Award

True Man
Caparas said he was aware of the criticism that his victory had bypassed such komiks legends as Mars Ravelo, Francisco V. Coching, Tony Velasquez and Larry Alcala.

"But they were my fellow recipients of the Presidential Medal of Merit in 2007. In any case, I am representing other komiks novelists and artists with this honor. I believe I was given this award because I was able to cross over from komiks to movies and TV."
Palace choices of 4 nat'l artists protested By Kristine L. Alave, Bayani San Diego Jr. Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 09:44:00 08/01/2009

Carlo Caparas can never represent these artists. Tony Velasquez, Larry Alcala, Francisco Coching and our father are komiks legends not as a result of a grand design but because of hard work, extraordinary talent and true passion for komiks. Caparas represents something else.

The belief of Caparas that he was conferred the NAA title because he was able to cross over from komiks to film and television is evident that Caparas does not understand the real meaning of this award. It also tells a lot about how oblivious he is to his fellow komiks artists' achievements and plight. Or, he just simply don't care.

When will Caparas realize that he is living in a dream? That he is not what he thinks he is? That he is not what the people around him tell him he is? That he is not the Komiks King? That he is undeserving of the National Artist title? That he is not a komiks legend? That he is not a messiah?

We can almost hear Caparas' torment echoing within his being. The uproar that is torturing him now. Why are so many people up in arms against him? Why are his fellow artists, particularly from the komiks and film sector not with him in his darkest hour?

All Caparas' camp's efforts from collecting awards, to grabbing and inventing all titles imaginable for him, to all the press releases meant to extol his legendary image are supposed to culminate to the National Artist title. Caparas' camp may have made certain that their contender will meet the list of criteria for the National Artist Award, at all cost. But the last criterion in the list was impossible to circumvent. It may be the last, but it is undoubtedly, not the least–respect and esteem from peers.

Mr. Caparas, try to find the exit door from that pseudo world of yours. It's the only way you can free yourself of all your misery and pain right now. Don't allow the Christofs in your life to tell you what to think and say. It's a matter of being able to come to terms with yourself. Truman Burbank found his exit door just in time.

To our father, you can stop turning in your grave now. Tell your friends Tony, Larry and Francisco, it went pffft.

kapag idineklara ko ba ang aso ng kapitbahay namin as National Artist by going thru all the legalities involved does that qualify him as a National Artist?

Kayong mga legal a$$#)!=s. . . meron kayong pagi-isip. gamitin ninyo.

ang batas, on its own, ay walang isip. iyong nagpapa-tupad nito, sana, meron.

    Good day!

I'm a 4th year Mass Communication Student of Ateneo de Davao University and my group and I are working with our thesis entitled FILIPINO KOMIKS INTERPRETED FOR TELEVISION SHOWS: COMPARATIVE STUDY. We would like to find out whether or not there is a significant change in the content of the Komiks as it is interpreted for television. We chose Mars Ravelo's works as the bases of comparison in our study.

In behalf of my group, I would like to ask for your help to where we can get original copies of Mars Ravelo's works.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. You can email us through penalvermark@gmail.com

Hoping for your positive response..THANK you so much and GOD bless!!

as an art dealer i really disagree on this award. National Artists is the highest award.Winners are fully respected and prestigeous. Isa sa mga dagdag winner ay siyang nag rerecommend sa Pangulo ng mananalo how come she ended up the winner?

Your username came from "Y The Last Man" of Vertigo Comics, right? I assume you're a comics fan and I'm glad to see a comics fan here. However...I don't think Mars Ravelo copied from Wonder Woman, although he did admit that Darna was inspired heavily by Superman.

You simply have to check the dates of his publications to see, I suppose. "The Little Mermaid" isn't a new concept as there have been tales of fishermen seeing mermaids (manatees that start looking like half human females after a few weeks in a boat) hundreds of years before Hans Christian Andersen penned it.

And I wouldn't use the word "copied". This method of borrowing concepts from other cultures and combining them with your own ideas is called "Appropriation" in the realm of the arts. It's hard to use the word "copied" because it might be misconstrued for "plagiarism".

    Hehe, sorry. Just couldn't resist.

Well, no matter what all of us say about how undeserving he is he will still come up the stage and accept the awards. But let us not loose hope. The pages of history still has to be written. There it will read an "undeserving National Artist receiving. A recognition marred by scandals and protests. Even his own colleagues does not support him."

Mars Ravelo was alredy a credible novelist even before Caparas was born. "Trudis Liit" gave Vilma Santos a break to be a child star. "Wanted Perfect Mother" is also a wonderful family oriented novel/movie. "Maruja" one of his best. Ravelo's super heroes and pang "masa" cartoon was great! Ganyan siya ka versatile, hindi niya pinilit maging pipitsuging director and never made a cheap masacre story/movie.

I must have been a Mars Ravelo fan long before I could read because from a young age I remember enjoying komiks illustrations of Darna, Bondying, Dyesebel, etc. Growing up, I enjoyed all the serialized Mars Ravelo novels because they were not only entertaining, they were definitely "for general patronage".

And, Rita, didn't your father create a "Rita Ritz" or something character after you?

Mars Ravelo can only be compared with Alcala, Coching and Velasquez. Caparas pales in comparison with them.

Hello??? Mula sa New York city, you guys are so gross!!!

National Artist Awards are about people trumpeting your praise and lifetime achievements.

If you have to be the one praising yourself, or if you have three or four defensive people backing you up, isn't there something wrong with the picture?

and yorickbrown -- i, myself, am not sure about this but maybe check the release dates of ravelo\\\'s comics against those you compared them to. most probably alot of the western heroes came out first but even they are based on something else. humanoids with super strength and mermaids do not originate from popular comics and lit.

    To "badly written" and "gaia":

How clearer can the point be? The statement says Carlo Caparas is a fake, is not the artist he claims he is, and will do anything including stepping on colleagues to get what he wants. That's written well enough.

The statement is important to point out how low an opinion Caparas's colleagues have of his "art." Just so we have an idea of the esteem held for this "National Artist."

Ganito ba ang "National Artist" for VISUAL ARTS?

If we will remain silent and accept the mistakes wala ngang mangyayari sa bansa natin. It is good na napag uusapan ang mga bagay na ito at least namumulat tayo sa ano bang tama, nararapat at mali.

Carlo J. C represents the maling-maling sistema at taste ng pagpili. Sa mga tao im sure nakatulong sya but sa bansa ba nakatulong sya through his works. Did it teach us to more appreciative of our culture?

I suggest both of them take their hats off and bow down humbly to pay their respect to where respect is due.

Respect begets respect. Time to be more responsible with our words and our works. Cheers our nation.

‘ Darna ‘, for example, is not an acronym that stands for various mythological characters, but the name of an entire alien civilization preserved in stone - one that ‘ Narda ‘ literally turns into upon swallowing, and, of course, its mention.

Carlo J. Caparas can’t come with this stuff in a million years.

Allow me to correct all preconceived notions, everyone :

Darna wasn't a copy of Wonder Woman. Darna was a take on Captain Marvel/ Shazam.

And the First Captain Barbell's costume looked a lot more like Plastic Man’s, but is a completely different work altogether.

    That original.

HEY ADE - I'm not saying that anybody copied anybody, but Darna DID NOT pre-date Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman first showed up 1941, Darna 1947. Thank you, Wikipedia.

@yorickbrown You know that Darna predated Wonder Woman, right?

Don't worry, nobody forgets it's still very clearly a GMA issue ... both directly (her violation of laws, best practices, good traditions) and indirectly (the shamelessness/impunity of the underlings reflecting the same of their "superior")

Sad thing is that this has been turned into a Caparas issue, when the issue is about the administration and how it just perverts systems and processes. Caparas is not the exact opposite of Cory. I don't even have to say who it is really.

@ yorickbrown... hindi dahil pareho ang tema ay pwede mo nang ituring na ito ay panggagaya. darna is very distinct and unique compared to Wonder Woman as much as Captain Barbel is to Captain Marvel (who may be compared to Superman or Shazam, so does that make the other character less original?) or the little mermaid is to dyesebel.

Can't exactly praise Ravelo completely since he heavily copied from Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, Plastic Man and The Little Mermaid, but he definitely deserves the "Komiks King" title more than Caparas.

By having Manoling Morato and Ricky Lo as his defenders, Caparas has proven that birds of a feather really do flock together. People who don't know what they're talking about and are clearly just in it for the money shouldn't be given any airtime on TV or page space in newspapers.

He still thinks under that dirty baseball cap that he deserves this honor. Idiot.

Yeah, Sock it to him Babe ! just curious, why is Manoling championing the lost cause of Carlo ? what does he see in Carlo that he doesn\'t see in the works of Cesar Legaspi ? imagine, Caparaz daw side by side with his Picassos and Gaugins, Que Barbaridad !
