Get a blanket, some chips, and get ready to camp out on your roof. PAGASA is promising one of the best light shows this evening as the Leonids meteor shower lights up Manila skies from 11 p.m. on November 17 to 6 a.m. on November 18, reports Philstar.com.
According to NASA, this phenomenon "is created by bits of debris left behind by the repeat passages through the inner solar system of comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle." In human terms, that basically means space junk will be entering our atmosphere at cosmic speeds making them light up the sky in awesome streaks of fire and ash.
To see this stellar display in its full glory, set your sights on or around the constellation Leo. Be sure to observe from a dark spot, away from the bright city lights that might obscure your view. If you're interested in seeing the shower up close, the best place to view it would be at the PAGASA Astronomical Observatory located at the UP Diliman Campus. Star-gazers should call them in advance at 929-1237.
The Leonids shower will last throughout the night. NASA estimates it to average 500 meteors per hour, making it one of the strongest, most spectacular displays this year.
