The Philippines named the most dangerous place in the world for journalists

Published: Nov 25, 2009 - 3:06pm

The Philippines is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists, says the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

The IFJ criticized the Arroyo administration for its slow response following the massacre in Maguindanao on November 23, where civilian women were killed along with lawyers and journalists, and then buried in shallow graves. The death toll has climbed to 52, according to the Associated Press.

IFJ General Secretary Aidan White released a statement saying:

"The Arroyo administration must make a clear and unequivocal commitment to an immediate, independent, and effective inquiry into this atrocity. With elections due in six months' time the authorities must act now to guarantee the safety of journalists throughout the country."

According to ABS-CBN News, an alleged political feud is said to be the cause of the killing by unknown perpetrators who robbed, shot, mutilated, beheaded, and ran over the victims using their vehicles. The journalists were part of a convoy headed by Genalyn Mangudadatu, wife of Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu of Buluan. She was on her way to Shariff Aguak to file her husband's candidacy for governor of Maguindanao.

"This is an event which shocks journalists around the world to the core," White continued, "We need a strong and urgent response from the Philippine government and the international community."

The IFJ, together with the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), have launched efforts to conduct their own investigation on the killings and give their assessment of the region. The IFJ also offered humanitarian support by opening its International Safety Fund for the victims' families.

Can somebody fire this idiot named Lorelei? She had no clue what happened to the private parts of the victims especially the women:

Presidential spokesperson, Lorelei Fajardo, gave to the warrior clan that is widely suspected to be behind the merciless massacre and mutilation of 57 persons in Maguindanao Monday. “I don’t think the President’s friendship with the Ampatuans will be severed,” Fajardo said. “Just because they are in this situation doesn’t mean we will turn our backs on them.” As if that weren’t enough assurance, she added, “it doesn’t mean that they are no longer our friends, if ever they indeed committed the crime.”

Up to now, it seems, Fajardo remains as blissfully unaware of the horror and the outrage that happened in Ampatuan, Maguindanao, as she has always been. On Tuesday she dismissed the mass murder as a mere “incident between two families” and said Malacañang “cannot be affected by that.”

Operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were briefly disrupted Friday afternoon after two Mindanao governors played Santa Claus and distributed P1,000 bills.

Q-11 television reported that Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan and his father Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan distributed the bills shortly after arriving at NAIA.

The report said the two governors distributed the money near the VIP lounge, before a 5:20 p.m. flight for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

It said pandemonium resulted as people near the Duty-Free Shop and the final check-in area scrambled to receive the P1,000 bills.

Radio dzRH reported Friday that both Ampatuans distributed bills for “30 to 40 minutes" before security personnel intervened and “escorted" them out of the area.

On the other hand, some immigration personnel reportedly took the bills offered to them as well.

After worldwide recognition because of Pacquiao and Penaflorida, this is what we get this time.

No to all warlords. Hang the Ampatuans. Turn their mansions, apparently stolen from government coffers, into social services centers in poor Maguindanao.

This government is the most immoral in the world. They allowed Chavit Singson to keep his position in spite of the much publicized beating.

How do you expect this government to address this barbaric Ampatuan issue? Did you know that Maguindanao is one of the poorest areas in the country? Did you see the mansions of the Ampatuans?

Last time I checked, this government is offering juicy positions to the other clan to pacify them.

I'm so ashamed. How can such barbarians be our countrymen? And how can those leading us allow this?
