Gibo's wife Rep. Nikki Teodoro withdraws support for RH Bill

Presidential candidate Gilberto Teodoro's wife, Tarlac Rep. Monica Louise "Nikki" Prieto-Teodoro, has officially withdrawn her support for the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, claiming that it does not directly address the problem of poverty in the country, reports Manila Standard Today.

Prieto-Teodoro said that it takes more than just population control to diminish poverty and boost the economic development of the Philippines. She continued, "I don't want to give poor Filipinos, especially children, the false hope that this bill will solve the problem of poverty because it does not."

Impoverished women and children seemed to be at the heart of her statements, stressing her point that the bill should be geared towards helping them. According to Prieto-Tedoro, the drafted RH Bill, which will go through its second reading in Congress on December 7, concentrates too much on contraception and wastes government funds on abortifacients and other ineffective reproductive-health measures. The RH Bill requires the availability of contraceptives in national hospitals and government health units, along with family planning education and the provision of reproductive health services.

"I'd rather spend our meager resources in directly feeding the poor, clothing the naked, giving shelter to the poor and educating them so they grow up productive and independent," Prieto-Teodoro stated.

Her statement was released in time for the upcoming Catholic Bishop's Conference of the Philippines, in which the bishops will be announcing their guidelines for Catholic voters. The Catholic Church has been very clear about its stand on the RH Bill, fervently trying to block legislation that would offer Filipinos a wide range of choices for contraception and reproductive health.

Other notable political personalities who side with the Catholic Church's stand are Prieto-Teodoro's husband Gilberto Teodoro and MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando while Sen. Noynoy Aquino, former president Joseph Estrada, and Sen. Richard Gordon have expressed their support for the Bill. Other candidates like Sen. Loren Legarda and Sen. Manny Villar have opted to stay neutral on the matter.

Have any of you ignoramus's out there actually read the RH bill ? And you still advocate the pushing thru of the bill ? If you are indeed Catholic and believe in the integrity of the Filipino, this bill just advocates stripping away your right to have or not have children. It actually advocates teaching your children... NOTE CHILDREN!!.... to use condoms and contraceptives under punishment of the law. No self respecting parent will push for this and Nikki is a true advocate of parenthood and very correct spiritually, politically and responsibly correct in withdrawing her support for this bill.

she's right. its not yet a law so there is a reason for her to do so. The problem with the Philippines is not about growing population, basically, it rooted out from lack of education. So it should be addressed well as to its real tenor. Prevention is always better than cure.

It's about time that politicians realize how dangerous the RH/Abortion Bill really is. In spite of its lip service against surgical abortions, the bill still explicitly funds abortifacient contraceptives such as pills, IUDs, "emergency contraceptives," injectables and implantables (some of which are banned in other countries). The abortifacient mechanism of these contraceptives is has long been established. It's just that many people are still ignorant -- or choose to be ignorant -- about it.

We should also remember that the Bill will violate our civil rights. Doctors will be forced to dispense artificial/abortifacient contraceptives or be forced to refer requestors to those who will do the same objectionable act. Those who refuse face fines and even imprisonment! That is a clear violation of freedom of conscience.

HB 5043 is a rotten piece of legislation. It is useless and undemocratic. Good thing Teodoro came to her senses. The sooner the rest of the pro-RH fanatics disabuse themselves of their delusions, the better.

Guys. Chill out. They still support the RH Bill. It's a chess game now till May. Believe me, they still do.

Besides, now that Congress shelved the bill. There is no RH bill to speak of till AFTER the next elections.

Im pro RH. But I see the logic. 150,000 votes from liberals like me and you all. Or 2,000,000 coerced votes from the Catholic Church.

Good thing about social media is that we can read between the lines. And if you read the lines, they aren't anti RH.

    Trust me.

Yes, I commend Gibbo's wife Nikki for a very strong stand against RH Bill.
SPOUSES should not agree that husbands or wives can undergo a ligation or vasectomy without the other spouse's consent or knowledge. (Section 21 on Prohibited Acts, Letter a, Paragraph 2)

PARENTS should not agree that children from age 10 to 17 should be taught their sexual rights and the means to have a satisfying and "safe" sex life as part of their school curriculum. (Section 12 on Reproductive Health Education and Section 4 Definition of Family Planning and Productive Health, Paragraph b, c and d)

CITIZENS surely do not want to be subjected to imprisonment and/or pay a fine, for expressing an opinion against any provision of this law, if such expression of opinion is interpreted as constituting "malicious disinformation" ( Section 21 on Prohibited Acts, Paragraph f and Section 22 on Penalties)

Worse, the bill takes away parental authority over a minor child who was raped and found pregnant (Section 21, a, no.3)

Stopping corruption, selfishness & self seeking interest is the only way to alleviate poverty.

Great news. It's about time people realized that HB 5043 is a draconian population control bill that will promote abortifacient contraceptives and violate our civil rights in the process.

I find it st*p*d for people to declare these things about nikki. To begin with, a good number of people who support the RH bill don't even know the whole Bill but just the fact that it gives contraceptives and sex education.

If nikki chooses to withdraw no one should call her st*p*d or judge her decision. It's her choice. Who knows, her husband may come up with a better RH bill which does not have loopholes, or areas where corruption can easily occur.

Please change your mind...Gibo is not an experience politico neither a community organizer. Ask him what has he done or what is his accomplishment as a public servant for the past 15 years? Crickets! that is correct. I would swing my vote to either Gordon or Noynoy.

di bale, this couple can say anything they want, but it won't change the fact that gibo's candidacy has been damaged beyond repair by the acts of his benefactor, gma, and by his own shortcomings as defense secretary. after the ondoy and pepeng disasters, which exposed his weakness as ndcc chairman, now comes the maguindanao massacre, which yielded govt weapons in the possession of these warlords. how'd that happen, mr. defense secretary?

This is a clear example of why you Filipinos have to think and think again to those people who just want a majority vote. These kind of politicians are the typical TRAPO as you termed it. There is a big difference between a Leader and just plain politician. A leader is firm to his stand, fight for his cause & people, he truly bare the language of hope and have the capacity to lead...yes! people of the Philippines "the capacity to LEAD". It is not enough that you can sing, dance and be arming for the pinoys to like you. Your country needs change, your people need to change. This era is time to re-invent your values formation. Maybe a phenominal event should take place again to achieve this change for the better. Filipinos, don't lose hope...the country needs you now...get out there and get involve for this cultural revolution.
  • Juicy Dec 03 2009 @ 09:09pm Report Abuse
What a bunch of bull. She issued this statement just in time for the Bishops' conference? That should tell you enough about what these people stand for. How sickening is it that UNTIL now, government is STILL using the Church and vice versa to further each others agenda. Talking about kissing *ss to get catholic support for her husband. I mean REALLY! How can you say you have the impoverished women and children in mind and NOT support the RH Bill? Isn't it obvious that we have no reproductive health education in poorer areas? We're just letting ourselves multiply like rabbits with no means of control. No means to feed, no means to educate. The Philippines is still in the dark ages and these Trapos have every intention of keeping us there.
  • Makamasa Dec 02 2009 @ 11:54pm Report Abuse
Who cares? There is no such thing as a Catholic vote.

There is such a thing as "masa" vote. All the debates, all the intelligent discussions, and all the best credentials in the world do not matter in the Philippines if the masa will not vote for the candidate. Why do you think everybody wants to be seen in Tondo?
  • Marc Dec 02 2009 @ 06:58pm Report Abuse
Such a shame. I thought they will really make a difference. It just goes to show that these people will compromise their convictions to court the mythical catholic vote and to get elected. Our population is a major reason why we are mired in poverty.
  • Priapus Dec 02 2009 @ 12:15pm Report Abuse
"Prieto-Teodoro said that it takes more than just population control to diminish poverty and boost the economic development of the Philippines."

-It may be true that the RH Bill is only part of the solution to our burgeoning population but I do not see how her withdrawal of support for the said bill could be considered productive.

"...and wastes government funds on abortifacients and other ineffective reproductive-health measures..."

-Huh? Why would an educated woman say something like this? The statement sounds misinformed. The bill does not promote any form of abortion whatsoever. In fact, it stresses that abortion is illegal. Congresswoman Garin, one of the authors of the bill, is a physician. I believe appropriate research was done before recommendations were made in this bill.

-The authors of the bill in both the Senate and the Congress is giving Filipinos the chance to exercise a right.

-Prieto-Teodoro can call this whatever she wants but this is nothing more than political maneuvering. Is it a coincidence that this sudden change in stance occurred so close to the 2010 presidential elections?

“I’d rather spend our meager resources in directly feeding the poor, clothing the naked, giving shelter to the poor and educating them so they grow up productive and independent,” Prieto-Teodoro stated.

-Classic. "I will feed you, clothe you, shelter and educate you, I will make your life better ... but I won't/can't tell you how." TraPo.

"Her statement was released in time for the upcoming Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines, in which the bishops will be announcing their guidelines for Catholic voters."

-Can someone tell me if the Catholic bloc vote is actually real? I refuse to believe that we Filipinos, Catholic or not, would be st*p*d enough to let the Church simply tell us who to elect.

-To our legislators, you answer to your constituents, not to the CBCP or your local parishes. Our taxes pay your salaries so you may best serve our interests, not rub elbows with religious leaders and fundamentalists. Stop wasting our time and money and quit insulting our intelligence.

So if you're against the RH bill, it means you can't think for yourself? That's hypocrisy right there.

Haven't read the bill myself so I can't judge. :-)
She probably has a very good reason based on the draft she read why she's backing-out. Hope this wouldn't affect Gibo's candidacy.
