Ang Ladlad now included in May ballots: Supreme Court stops Comelec's LGBT ban

Published: Jan 13, 2010 - 12:05pm

Through a temporary restraining order (TRO), the Supreme Court stopped the Commission on Elections from denying the party list bid of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) group, Ang Ladlad. In the same ruling, the SC ordered the Comelec to print Ang Ladlad's name on the ballots for the May elections, reports Inquirer.net.

The SC issued a TRO against two rulings of the Comelec last year: the first on November that denied Ang Ladlad's party-list application because they "tolerate immorality," and the second on December that junked Ang Ladlad's appeal to overturn the November ruling.

The SC has yet to tackle the merits of the case but they issued a TRO since the ballots will be printed starting January 25. "If the Court decides that the party-list Ladlad should be included, then it might be very difficult, if not impossible, to include them," said Supreme Court spokesman and deputy court administrator Jose Midas Marquez. Marquez told GMANews.tv that the "[TRO] is indefinite until [the high court] decides to lift the order or decides on the case of Ang Ladlad."

The Comelec had until January 11, Monday to comment on the TRO but Marquez told GMANews.tv on January 12 that they didn't receive any comment from the Comelec.

In his blog, Ang Ladlad National Chairperson Danton Remoto wrote, "O kitam? There is a God of divine justice who sees all, but just waits. Let us hope and pray the SC reverses the insane Comelec decision calling us immoral and not letting us become the number-one party list in the 2010 polls."

In an interview with GMA News, Remoto said, "Nung nagpadala ang Comelec noong November ng kanilang decision na Ladlad should not be allowed to run because they are immoral, tawa ako nang tawa. Sabi ko, anong nangyari sa Comelec? Ang I.Q. bumagsak... Ayan tuloy, dinampot sa kangkungan."

I don't care whether Ang Ladlad get's recognized or not. Big deal, but in a country that is riddled with poverty, sexual orientation should be the last of our concerns. Believe me, any of you out there who is dying, or was told that you have a few months to live, those who are hungry, and those whose love ones were murdered. Sexual orientation and preference will be the last thing on your mind.
Besides, I really don't know what discrimination LGBT and LADLAD is talking about, I worked several jobs already and a lot of the supervisors are gay, and it never was a problem for me, for the companies I worked for, nor for my officemates. Stop making mountains out of molehills, a lot of outwardly gay and lesbian people hold positions of power in the corporate and even political scenario. Besides, wala na bang karapatan ang ibang tao na sabihin na mali ang homosexuality?

Congrats to my cousin. I hope there should be a clear rule with regards to denying a party list.

Hay salamat there are still logical, progressive people with enough IQ in government! What century is the Comelec from again? Pre-
    Deluvian, Pre-Cambrian trilobites!
