Robin Tomas, 33, won the Best Reinvention of the Men's T-shirt award at the Supima Design Competition held January 19 in New York City. His winning design will be sold in Bloomingdale's stores all over the U.S. "This is my first time to do a t-shirt. Very exciting, very challenging. I'll never look at a t-shirt the same way again," Tomas said in an interview during the initial model fitting for the competition.

Tomas was one of six finalists in the competition whose work was judged on the basis of originality and execution by representatives from Bloomingdale's, Parsons School of Design, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The finalists presented four pieces: three pieces of women's evening wear and one men's (or unisex) t-shirt, all made from Supima (an abbreviation of Superior Pima) cotton. The t-shirt competition was added after the launch of Supima's unisex t-shirt collection in December. Gina DeSilva, who has her own ready-to-wear label, took home the grand prize for her evening wear designs.

"Fashion is a great mix of entities: fantasy and practical reality; past periods and the unchartered path of what's to come. I see fashion not just as garment being worn, but attitudes enhanced," Tomas told Supima.

Currently based in New York, Tomas has his own label named after him. In May 2009, he showed his women's wear collection during Philippine Fashion Week. Top designer Rajo Laurel described his collection as "very strong, filled with many pieces that would make any woman swoon!" His mother, actress/comedienne Tessie Tomas, was the one who encouraged him to present his collection in Manila during New York's economic crunch.

A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Tomas worked as a menswear designer for Gap, Tommy Hilfiger and J. Crew. He interned at Valentino and Anna Sui. Before leaving the country for Parsons in 2001, he was an art director at ad agency Saatchi & Saatchi. He graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in graphic design.

I don't think Queer Eye is complaining. Queer Eye is making a statement na hindi natin matanggap kasi totoo.

eh di mag Wharton, Stanford, Parsons ka rin. May financial aid naman. Kung wala, di magtrabaho ka abroad at pag-ipunan mo. Nothing is impossible once you stop complaining about how things are, get off your "but"s, and do whatever it damn takes to reach your goals.

Kakasawa naman this "porque mayaman" persecution complex. Usually mga tamad ang mahilig mag sourgraping. Find a way to take your talent to its highest potentials, and do what it takes to make it to the top. Success also means knowing your market. If your line of business caters to the higher echelons of society such as fashion design, eh di natural you need to network in that market. There are graduates of FIT, Parson's, CIA, Oxford, Wharton, etc. who did nothing with their degrees and continue to live off Daddy.

Tev, Parson's is Parson's. If you make it in New York if you are a graduate of Parson's, there is no way you can't make it in Manila.

Manila is Manila. Get real. Rich or poor, ABCDE, it is a full of social climbers.

It is like you are from Oxford, Wharton, or Stanford that your future is sealed.

If you are from UP only, I agree, it is tough to go up the social ladder. Just join the Oblation Run to get attention.

queer eye, i never realized paying for an education in parsons can also buy you instant fame.

you have a sad perception of reality. it should be tough for you to climb the social ladder you put in such high esteem.

    Bravo Noynoy:

"It works in the sense that you do not have to flee the country to move up in the world, improve your lot in life, and rise to the highest level your personal merits can achieve. We are a nation of sacrifice, of diligence, dedication and, idealism, because we are a people imbued with compassion EVEN WHEN WE HAVE OFFICIALS WHO LIE, STEAL, AND CHEAT."

Fair Lady, you and I know that Affirmative Action is a misnomer in the Philippine setting.

It takes a village to make it in Manila if you are not a graduate of the right school, you don't have the pedigree, you live in the wrong neighborhood, and you don't hang out with chichi crowd aka Gucci Gang.

    Reality bites.

Queer Eye naman, marami ring designers with the correct family name na hindi nag-succeed in the Philippines. It takes more than that. Marami rin namang probinsiyano who succeeded in Manila.

International experience also exposes you to the best standards, practices and ideas. I don't think Mobo and Tomas would have succeeded without having worked in fashion capitals like NY and London. Whether you're probinsiyano or de buena familia, what really matters is what you do with your talent and where you take it.

Rajo Laurel wouldn't succeed if all his customers did not like his clothes. I don't think any woman would wear bad clothes just because the designer has a correct family name. In the end, women buy what makes them look good.
  • Queer Eye Jan 21 2010 @ 09:43am Report Abuse
This guy is a graduate of Parson's but is not popular in the Philippines.

Rajo Laurel is popular in the Philippines because he has the correct family name and you know what I mean.

Look at Lesley Mobo who is a top designer of Harrods of London and Diesel. Sino papansin dyan sa Pilipinas kung probinsyano ka lang? Now, all of a sudden, nang sumikat si Lesley internationally, pinansin na sa Pilipinas. An underwear label of Bench is now called MOBO.
