Rajo Laurel dress lands the cover of Women's Wear Daily

Published: Feb 10, 2010 - 1:28pm

Rajo Laurel, fashion designer and Project Runway Philippines judge, landed the cover of international fashion bible, Women's Wear Daily (WWD), on February 9. The cover story (available at WWD.com for subscribers) features Laurel's fall collection to be shown at the New York City Fashion Coterie, which Laurel describes as "a glorified tiangge… a very exclusive bazaar." The Coterie, open only to the press and buyers, is on February 21 to 23.

Gracing the WWD front page is Laurel's "slinky body-con dress... wrapped in a cobweb of shredded silk jersey." He told WWD, "I like dark, strange things… I like to find beauty in the unexpected." During his interview with WWD, he had no idea they were going to put him on the cover, he told SPOT.ph.

"I'm really happy; it hasn't sunk in yet," Laurel told SPOT.ph. With his Facebook, BlackBerry and email flooded with congratulatory messages, Laurel said, "It's overwhelming! I have to answer all of those [messages]."

In his StyleBible.ph blog today, February 10, Laurel wrote, "I am so excited that I am shaking like a leaf right now! This is so HUGE because it is the start of the New York Fashion Week right now and this will really open up doors for me and my company."

"I just have to express my gratitude to my sister Venisse Laurel-Hermano. Her strong guiding light was a source of strength to me and my team.   This opportunity is one step closer in reaching my dream," Laurel wrote in his blog.

Laurel leaves for New York on February 19 or 20, in time for the three-day Coterie.

I dont think cobweb design is unique. everyone has seen one, so why are you claiming you created them and unique a design on a dress? doesnt make sense.

    @ Maximo:
(hay kailangan talaga ng kapital! paano naman yung designers na walang pangpundar to make it internationally)

Kailangan talaga. But Rajo am sure started with a small capital as well, like everyone else. But he must have good discipline, ambition, hard work and a little bit of luck because he is where he is now.

Obviously, talent alone can't help you, or then again it can, if you're so talented that financiers are willing to back you up and invest on you. :)

The Pinoy fashion coup in America is the handiwork of the very dependable Filipino New Yorker Artus Concepcion, a fashion PR practitioner. He has been responsible for Rajo's landing on the cover of WWDas well as other previous Filipino fashion brands. Expect more features on Filipino talents in US magazines. Artus Concepcion really does a great job for his clients.
