"Abstain from Facebook, texting and pork this Lent" says Pinoy priest

Published: Feb 18, 2010 - 10:17am

Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz of Lingayen-Dagupan urged Filipino Catholics to abstain from Facebook , movies, videogames, texting and eating pork, reports Yahoo! News. "All these sacrifices are a form of mortification of the flesh. It is a form of self-denial that is meant to elevate the spiritual needs over the physical," the priest said.

Cruz, a retired archbishop known for advising other Catholic bishops to use blogs in evangelism, also told ABS-CBN News that politicians need to stop political mudslinging during Lent. He recommended that instead of politicking, they should use their campaign funds to help the poor and provide social justice for oppressed Filipinos.

"We have candidates who say they are for the poor but then spend millions of pesos on their campaign ads. Where is the justice there? It's common sense that if you want to help your fellow man, you attend to his needs first before your own," he said.

The former archbishop reminded Catholics that they should spend the season contemplating the sacrifices made by Jesus Christ, and in their own ways, do the same.

Oh no, the Swiss Guards will be unhappy. Locally, he will be worse than Tita Manoling if not LaGuardia. We might as well go back to the Dark Ages.

If my memory serves me right, this is the same gecko who labeled folks who want to ogle at UP Oblation runners as "lascivious" and earned the ire of Tita Aida. I will not be surprised if he labels tourists at Sistine Chapel as voyeurs.

On a positive note, let us celebrate our diversity here. Thanks spot.

    @ Gecko,
The Catholic Church is renouncing its franchise on Salvation? When? didn't hear that. Greatest sin is willful IGNORANCE? that's new! I thought it was PRIDE. Did you hear about the seven capital sins? if Ignorance is included that would be eight. What are you a DEACON or something?
As I have said, you don't need ORGANIZED RELIGION to profess your faith in God and follow his commandments. You can do it directly. ORGANIZED RELIGION is about CONTROL. They own your heart & mind.
  • gecko Feb 22 2010 @ 02:01pm Report Abuse
And I would answer Waldo because his arguments were a mess. I'm glad Aiko put me up for this.

The Catholic Church does not claim it is the only way for salvation. In fact, its scholars have written time and time again that being a part of the Catholic Church does not guarantee being saved, or that being not part of it means you're going to hell.

What you have to remember is this: The greatest sin against God is willful ignorance. This means people who does not know God from the very start does not err in faith. Those in the wrong are people who are consciously aware that there is God, but they still choose to ignore His commandments.

Now, why be a part of the Catholic Church, or any other religion for that matter? Because doing so helps you be constantly conscious of the said commandments.

I am only arguing for the Catholic Church. I know other religions say they own exclusive salvation. The Catholic Church completely disowns that.

Your argument would have been better if you chose to leave God out of it.

Don't confuse God with Organized Religion. God has absolutely nothing to do about it. In fact,he is so pisssed off, because HIS name is being used in vain by organized religions. Didn't you noticed that all religions, sects and other denominations insists that they have ONLY THE TRUE FRANCHISE FOR THE RESURRECTION? They all have a business class tickets for the Pearly Gates? I prefer to be educated in the public school system to a Jesuit-run school. I wear slippers and old uniforms but what you see is what you get. In an exclusive school where everybody wants to upstage everybody in terms of wealth, the pressure is more unreal. There are programs of immersion like going to the cultural minorities, selling hotdogs in sidewalks, working as warehouse person in a grocery store, etc. That is all hype and non-sense. The hypocrisy makes me throw up vs. experiencing the real world.

Interesting thread. The world is really a mess. With all that is happenning around us HAITI earthquake, rich getting richer, poor getting poorer, global warming, nice people getting sick, priests and pastors getting involved in scandals etcetc one would question the existence of God and the relevance of religion.

But there are so many things going right in this world. Most people are healthy, have work, have good families and are happy. We eat and are satisfied. We see a kid playing and we feel happy.

Religion isn't just a set of rules and regulations. It isn't a just moral system. The essence of religion is faith.

blablah, I do not want to be involved in any religious debate because you and I know that it is endless.

Everybody knows where the Catholic Church stands in all the issues I brought up. If your stand is different then let your voice be heard not only in Katipunan.

Unfortunately, I do not believe in anything jesuitic. Being a "man for others" in your circle is not just a status symbol but more of a fad. Action speaks louder than words.

Check the college education of most of our politicians including the Arroyo family. Truly, they are the "men for other people's money".

Being a Catholic I am also offended at how you generalize all Catholics to be such. I believe and fully support the RH Bill and empowerment of the LGBT sector because my Jesuit education teaches me to be a discerning Christian or one who obeys Church teachings while understanding the problems of society. I know of many priests and Catholic theologians who have the same sentiments as I do and I think it's unfair for you to judge us all that easily.

I am offended when your mom or her religious organization think its their business to dictate my choices in life (family planning or disease control measures like condoms). If not for the Filipinos and the Polish, the churches in Ireland are empty. As in wala nang nagsisimba. They've lost faith in their priests after the Dublin Report was published. http://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/PB09000504

Spain too, the country who gave us Catholicism, after Franco died in 1975, it has become a secular country. They had to import Filipino priests to fill up their empty churches. Because no one in Spain is joining the clergy. For them religion is no longer relevant.

The churches in Europe are mostly turned into museums for lack of support. Sad but true.

In Boston, the religious liquidated most of their properties as well. If not for the Filipinos in their respective communities, most churches in the US are closing for good.

Islam is the fastest growing religion in Europe and in North America. The only Catholic stronghold in the world are Poland, Central and South America, the Caribbean (except Cuba) and the Philippines.

Every Easter Sunday, in radical San Francisco , a group distributes condoms right after the Easter Mass outside the St. Mary's Cathedral.

While I disagree with the timing out of respect for the holiest time for Catholics, this is something that can be copied in Manila at some other time. Maybe after every convention of priests where 4000 men in cloth attend, a group will distribute condoms outside the venue. This can also be distributed after masses during fiestas.

I'm atheist and I haven't had bad experiences with religion, nor religious people, nor am I having a difficult time in life. I've merely concluded that there is no evidence of God.

Of course people like to laugh at hypocrisy, whether it's in politics, religion, your job, or your dinner table. Irony is a source of universally appealing humor. You can't blame people for that, especially when the church keeps providing comedy material.

For sure some atheists or agnostics go over the top with the mocking, which is rude and counterproductive. Nonetheless I would say that's a small inconvenience compared to the imposition that Christianity causes on all of our lives here, whether we want it or not.
  • Valentino Feb 18 2010 @ 07:41pm Report Abuse
Oh, just extend some understanding to the hating atheists. They may just have had bad experiences with religion, or some religious people, or may be themselves in a difficult time in their lives. This is probably why they seem to get some contentment with judging, disrespecting, or giving a hard time to people who don't share their ideas or opinions.

That, plus being nice to you, will be my Lenten sacrifice. Peace to all of you and see you in church soon!

Please, Catholics and religious peoples (Buddhists, Muslims, etc) are easier to target because we have a set of standards and principles that we should follow. We are continually striving to live these principles and it takes time and deep personal commitment to do so.
Atheists, on the other hand, are not accountable to anything other than themselves so when a study shows that atheists are "more" generous, helpful or peace-loving it is already treated as a headliner since nothing is expected of them.
I, as a Catholic, accept all these charges of hypocrisy and I will not let these generalized perceptions stand in my way of helping my neighbor- maging Katoliko man siya o hindi.
  • blahblah Feb 18 2010 @ 04:45pm Report Abuse
I hate the generalized view of people about the Catholic Church. Sometimes I don't even get why it's okay to just bash Christianity as a whole when most people (believers alike) don't really understand the essence of Church teachings. I dunno. i just think it's sad.

NCSO, good of you to ask. The atheist survey was done by Eurostat whose main job it is to collect statistical information for the European Commission--located in Luxemborg. The corruption survey is done annually by Transparency International. It's quite a famous survey quoted by newspapers all over the world every year. The Philippines is always among the most corrupt countries.

You're welcome Marj. I think the point here is not to bash God or the Church. The point is that you are not a good person if you are Church-going and you are not a bad person just because you are an atheist. Giving up facebook and texting will not bring you salvation. It will just save you lots of money and time. If you wanna do something good, donate books to public schools or making do weekend soup kitchens.

I live in the US and I got the biggest shock of my life when I attended masses in Manila. People almost literally pushed each other to line up for holy communion. This was true in the 3 churches that I visited there. I know that in the US the churches are almost empty but there is always an orderly way of lining up for holy communion - from the front pew to the back. It just shows how chaotic the Filipino way of life is that even the Church can't espouse orderliness inside its house.

hey Marj is right after all...

Check this wikipedia entry out. Western countries do have a high percentage of their population who do not believe in God. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism

Now check this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index. Most Western European countries are high on list of having clean governments.

The corruption index versus the atheist index do show some patterns about more "godless" countries being less corrupt.

Marj could be right. And it is true, churchgoing in Europe has been down for years. Google it. Of course, the most Catholic of the European countries--Italy--the center of the Vatican--also is one of the most corrupt. Berlusconi, I love you.
