First condoms, now pills: Sec. Cabral continues DOH reproductive health program

Published: Feb 26, 2010 - 12:49pm

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Esperanza Cabral says giving away contraceptive pills is the next thing on their agenda, reports the Philippine Star , as well as providing adequate reproductive health information to interested couples.

"We leave it to the families to do whatever they want to do and the DOH only facilitates or assists families who wish to do family planning...We will be giving out pills, however, we have partners from international aid agencies and local government units to make sure that people are given the proper information as well as access to the services they need," said Cabral.

The Secretary said several international organizations have given the DOH P2.5 million for contraceptives to be distributed as a part of the government's family planning program. She told the Star she hopes a compromise could be reached between the Catholic Church and the DOH so that their efforts are fruitful. Over the past weeks, several Catholic bishops expressed their concerns about Cabral's "immoral" program and called for her resignation.

Cabral reiterated her stance by saying the DOH will continue protecting the people's health while the Church should focus on their responsibility of taking care of the people's morality. "I think it's the right thing to do in order to promote the health of the people and that is a mandate the DOH has. We are just doing what we are supposed to do," said Cabral.

The Star reports that President Macapagal-Arroyo supports the DOH by not ordering a stop to their campaign, but by saying that Cabral should check first with the President before any further implementation, as advised by presidential spokesman Ricardo Saludo.

    @ Manny & Progresibo,

You are both right my Comrades, ECONOMICS 101 nga.

@Trojan: Pardon me, but YOU are being reactionary and childish, I might add. @Progresibo is right about you.

I am merely concerned with saving lives by using the most effective means possible. Please stick to the facts and leave childish rants and ad hominems out of this discussion.

By the way, the idea of carrying capacity is obsolete since people aren't just consumers taking pieces of a static pie. They are also producers that create value and discover and create resources. Economics 101, my friend.

Tama ka Pare. Dapat suportahan natin ang simbahan, para mas lalong dumami ang mga Pilipino at marami tayong OFW. Hindi ba nila alam na mas maraming OFW, mas marami tayong Foreign Exchange?

Manny, leave it to the progressive folks like TROJAN to answer your data backed arguments with really childish ad hominems, that's how they roll. They literally flood posts like these with their inanity that it's really funny. Also, I suspect that this is being done by just a couple of people just to up the views of such articles. And, don't forget, they have the higher IQ's daw.

    @Manny,

Why are you so REACTIONARY ? are you a member of OPUS DEI? I'm taking my chances with PILLS,CONDOMS, TUBAL LIGATION, STERILIZATION, and hell yeah, with ANTHRAX, if it could whittle down our population to manageable levels. Are you familiar with the phrase CARRYING CAPACITY? what do you think is the appropriate carrying capacity of the our country to lead decent& humane lives?

Sec. Cabral isn't only ignorant, she's a health menace. Scientific studies show that condom usage encourages irresponsible and casual sex. This leads to more unplanned pregnancies and abortions. Condoms are the most INEFFECTIVE and COUNTERPRODUCTIVE means to address HIV/AIDS.

Studies also show that increased contraceptive use also results in similar behavior, resulting in a net INCREASE in unwanted pregnancies and abortions.

Here are some of those studies:

-- Increasing Condom Use Without Reducing HIV Risk: Results of a Controlled Community Trial in Uganda
    http://journals.lww.com/jaids/pages/articleviewer.aspx?year=2005&issue=09010&article=00013&type=abstract

Conclusions: In this study, gains in condom use seem to have been offset by increases in the number of sex partners. Prevention interventions in generalized epidemics need to promote all aspects of sexual risk reduction to slow HIV transmission.

-- Habit Persistence and Teen Sex: Could Increased Access to Contraception have Unintended Consequences for Teen Pregnancies?
    http://www.econ.duke.edu/~psarcidi/teensex.pdf

"The persistence in sexual activity is such that policies that affect access to contraception will have very different effects in the short run than the long run. Our results suggest that increasing access to contraception may actually increase long run pregnancy rates even though short run pregnancy rates fall. On the other and, policies that decrease access to contraception, and hence sexual activity, are likely to lower pregnancy rates in the long run."

Here is an article about Dr. Green's studies on AIDS prevention.

From Saint Peter’s Square to Harvard Square
    http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=MTNlNDc1MmMwNDM0OTEzMjQ4NDc0ZGUyOWYxNmEzN2E

"We have found no consistent associations between condom use and lower HIV-infection rates, which, 25 years into the pandemic, we should be seeing if this intervention was working.â€Â

So notes Edward C. Green, director of the AIDS Prevention Research Project at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies, in response to papal press comments en route to Africa this week.

Sec. Cabral ought to know about these, but so far she's just ignored them so she can push her deadly RH agenda. More Filipinos will pay with their lives for her st*p*dity.

The distribution of condoms and pills is a good start. Hurrah to Tita Espie. She knows better.

Good economy? Hell yeah. It contributes to that. Think of your family as the Philippine economy. Think of your hubby as a taxi driver. Think of yourself as a teacher. You have 3 kids and one is on the way. Do you think your life will be the same? No brainer.

    Interesting Study:

Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds.

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

The reasoning is that sexual exclusivity in men, liberalism and atheism all go against what would be expected given humans' evolutionary past. In other words, none of these traits would have benefited our early human ancestors, but higher intelligence may be associated with them.

My comment: Just read how the LIBERALS and the EXTREME RIGHT respond to issues in all the blogs. You can sense who has higher IQ. LOL LOL LOL

Why stop at pills Madame Secretary? how about COMPULSORY TUBAL LIGATION and COMPLETE STERLIZATION, for couples who has no visible means of income. They become a SOCIAL PROBLEM. 100 Million hungry and illiterate Filipinos is a SWORD OF DAMOCLES, hanging over our heads.

    @Rudy

Yeah I know, its so sad. This country is so socially backward because of the church. I mean ang kapal pa ng mukha nila, theyre going to beg for donations to feed the poor. I'm not heartless but there wouldn't be so many people without food if the population was in check. Besides, why don't they sell some "material" treasures from the vatican to tend to the dying? Also, I'm sure all those churches around the world have huge real estate values since theyre all centrally located. Why not sell some property.

I really don't care what they do, but I hate it when the church wants help to solve a problem they created.

I don't get it. Hasn't this issue been around like for 30 years already, since the time of Marcos even? Remember Juan Flavier and just about every other Health Secretary/Minister? Still it's being treated here like its some new controversy, deserving a third article in about as many days. First there was the Marlene Aguilar series, then the cobweby thingy the designer did that was controversial series, then this. Thanks, but please move on, there can be more variety on The Feed.

Tita Espie, there is no such thing as a Catholic vote in the Philippines. Who cares? Go Go Go Gurl. You are supported by a majority of what the bishops often call as the discerning flock.

What I choose for my reproductive system is not a fuing business of others.
