CBCP wants warning labels on condoms, a ban on ads

Published: Mar 5, 2010 - 2:37pm

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) released a statement on Wednesday, March 3, calling for the placement of mandatory warning labels on condoms saying "CONDOMS MAY FAIL TO PROTECT FROM AIDS AND OTHER SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES," reports the CBCP News, "in the same way that the government requires warnings for certain substances [like cigarettes and alcohol] the Department of Health (DOH) should also require a Government Warning for condoms." They also want a ban on condom ads "from television, radio, movies, newspapers, magazines, and public places, as they desensitize the youth's delicate conscience and weaken their moral fiber as future parents," said CBCP president Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar.

Odchimar further stated that instead of condom distribution, the DOH should instead use the taxpayers' money to focus on diseases such as diarrhea, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, cancer, hypertension and influenza. "It is unjust that the taxes of the people including Catholics be used for purposes against their moral beliefs," the statement read.

Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, information officer of the CBCP, supported this by saying that condom distribution does not solve AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) but only "aggravates the problem," reports CBCP News.

Archbishop Oscar Cruz took it a step further when he told ABS-CBN News, "When [the DOH says] that condom promotes safe sex, it also promotes contra-human values. Marami: responsibility, promiscuity, and in fact it even also promotes the AIDS virus."

DKT Philippines, one of the condom distributors partnering with the DOH, contradicted the CBCP's statements stating that condom ads actually help educate the public about family planning, reports ABS-CBN News.

Jojo Ampeloquio, Head Product Manager DKT Philippines told ABS-CBN, "With regards to the efficacy of the condom, the World Health Organization, which is at the forefront of public health... has clearly pronounced [that]... the condom is the single best device that helps prevent HIV-AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases."

It's the height of foolishness to regulate LIBIDO by banning condoms & pills. When the bishops/priests feel horny, what do they do? take a cold shower? pray the rosary? eat papayas?
    Anybody here knows the answer?

It is a sin to give away free condoms the masses.

DOH, how about distributing condoms to priests who engage in sexual activities to avoid producing children?

There you have it: Enough said!

The Vatican has been thrown into chaos by reports that one of the Pope's ceremonial ushers, as well as a member of the elite Vatican choir, were involved in a homosexual prostitution ring.

A condom ad weakens a youth's moral fiber as future parents. Does that make sense to anyone? That's possibly the dumbest claim I've ever heard.

Second, of course it's just to use taxes for purposes which are contrary to one group's moral beliefs. The government represents the people, not just a few people.

Third, a government warning on a cigarette pack is a warning that the product itself causes harm to your body. When it comes to condoms, the product itself doesn't cause any harm. The DOH shouldn't require condom makers to place a health warning on a product that isn't unsafe.

They should also warn us about fornicating and pimping priests and ushers working in their GHQ: The Vatican. I doubt it if they don't use condoms there.

Why is wanting to have sex akin to "falling"? It's a natural biological urge. The sooner everyone accepts this the less conflicted they will all be and hopefully logic (condoms can save lives!) will prevail.

there are no gurantees in life. just be realistic, the holy wafer cannot prevent you from having aids, it can boost your power to abstain from having sex, but we are human, we fall, and when we fall, we need condoms.

Mrs. Cabral should up the ante. She should also demand from the Bishops/Priests, that every time they are giving holy communion to the faithful, they should also give this caveat: This Holy wafer doesn't guarantee your salvation & redemption. You may, or may not wind up in hell.

In the eyes of some Catholic Bishops, the DOH has committed a crime worse than the Maguindanao massacre, a sin deadlier than the election fraud that marred the 2004 presidential vote. The DOH has distributed free condoms.

Bishops who were not heard from after the gruesome massacre hit the news, or kept quiet after President Macapagal-Arroyo gave her infamous “I am sorry” speech, have attacked Cabral for abetting immorality, if not being immoral herself.
