Asteroids obliterated dinosaurs, study confirms

Published: Mar 6, 2010 - 11:40am

The official word is out: Dinosaurs became extinct due to a giant asteroid colliding into Earth, according to a review published in the journal Science by an international team of scientists on March 4, reports Reuters.

"A panel of 41 scientists from across the world reviewed 20 years' worth of research to try to confirm the cause of the so-called Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) extinction, which created a "hellish environment" around 65 million years ago and wiped out more than half of all species on the planet," said Reuters.

"We now have great confidence that an asteroid was the cause of the KT extinction. This triggered large-scale fires, earthquakes measuring more than 10 on the Richter scale, and continental landslides, which created tsunamis," said Joanna Morgan of Imperial College London, a co-author of the review. The force of the asteroid upon impact on Earth is believed to have been a billion times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The massive asteroid or comet smashed into Earth at Chicxulub on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, said the BBC.

"The final nail in the coffin for the dinosaurs" said Morgan, was the atmosphere's contamination of blasted material which covered Earth in darkness, causing a global winter "killing off many species that couldn't adapt to this hellish environment." Gareth Collins, another co-author from Imperial College, said the asteroid explosion created a "hellish day" ending the 160-million-year existence of the dinosaurs,   but also "ultimately paved the way for humans to become the dominant species on Earth." The BBC reports that the extinction also killed off half of all species on Earth including the dinosaurs, bird-like pterosaurs and large marine reptiles, leaving out mammals to be the dominant species on Earth.

After much deliberation and debate, scientists   from Europe, the United States, Mexico, Canada and Japan ruled out that the cause of the extinction was volcanic activity in the Deccan Traps (now India), where a series of super volcanic eruptions lasted for around 1.5 million years.

As usual, the comments obliterated the dinosaurs/asteroids topic. I love the diversity of spot readers. Proof that it is multi-class ABCD...sorry walang E.

    peeps!

can't we all just get along? hehehe.

@spototoy - i admire your sense of humor and of not being onion-skinned like the majority of the population.

can't we all get a big laugh out of all this? chill people :-D

kelangan pala ng strunk and white by your side whenever you comment on spot. or else the grammar police will attack! but really, this exchange is more entertaining than the article!

Yeah, Mr. igeramos, don't pollute your aura with petty grammar wars like this mehn. Enjoy na lang your Oscars with some valiums and mojitos, all will be mellow pa.

Look at Elizabeth, I now understand that what she was doing was standing up for a Brit friend and was unhappy with my English scientists remark. She even admitted to making talisod on the pag-iingles once in a while. She is probably happily decked out in Burberry munching fruitcake in her sala na.

It's been fun with you guys. Now off to work for the devil bossman....

The intent was to make a correction and to add a sliver of good humor.

I expected a swift response from spototoy but not a violent reaction from a lady-in-waiting seated in the peanut gallery.

Anyway, spototoy tried his best to go with the flow and I admire him for that. I am not perfect too. Last week, I made a comment in another blog regarding "hypocrites" and I had typed it as "hipocrites". Immediately, a commenter said that I cannot identify a hippo from a hypocrite and I am "not a wide reader". I did not take it personally.

I would like to apologize to the extinct dinosaurs for leading this topic to its natural death in the comment world.

I am not an Anglophile but one of my best friends is Brit. There are only 3 things I love from the UK: Harrod's, fruit cake from Marks and Spencer, and Burberry Prorsum. Again, the accent is in the first syllable for BUR-berry just like BUL-gari.

igeramos, have a lovely day and enjoy the Oscars. For the rest, I suggest a visit to Washington D.C. to view the dinosaur fossil exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum. Moving from Oxford to Georgetown is not a bad idea after all.

All is well that ends well.

@Arabella, Yeah right, and I have a double degree in Nuclear Physics and Semiotics from the Kings College in Oxford University, unlike you, an English teacher in some tin pot, unknown school whose name is similar to a place where closeted English homosexuals cruise to pay for sex.

@Tita Aida, Alam mo naman ako, multi-lingual (hahahaha). Lumalabas ang pagka-jolog at polyglot ko pag naimbyerna. Let's join nalang Anita Linda in the dragon boat race to relieve our stress. Kakainis, I can't sleep, Oscars pa naman mamayang umaga.

@ Camilla, how's our little Charles? Your words are music to my ears.

@ Spototoy, sinimulan mo ito, ngayon tapusin ninyo ito ni Elizabeth. Kailangan ng malinaw na resolusyon. Translation: Elizabeth, we must arrive in a clear conclusion on what we have to do in order to stop that cow who's acting like a giant asteroid colliding into this planet. Otherwise, we will be extinct like dinosaurs in due time.

Bawal ang bully dito. FYI Arabella, Meron nang anti-bullying law sa bansa ninyo. Translation: You can't push your weight around this place, gurl. There's a law in England that prohibits you to act the way you please. In case you didn't know, here's the link, you bully girl.

Let us follow Anita Linda's advice. Let us join the dragon race daw at Plantation Bay or CamSur to relieve some stress. PMS ba? Isasama ba natin si Arabella? Pang River Thames ba talaga siya? Ayaw ni Big Ben ng ganyan. LOL

For headaches caused by stress, I know you would choose Biogesic because of your love for Lloydie. LOL

As I see it, the pedantic Elizabeth meant well, the open-minded spototoy accepted the correction with dignity, and the cool igeramos blended well with an infusion of wit and sarcasm. Everybody was a good sport.

Now, here comes the tsunami of words from Arabella. Your words did not reflect much of your nobility but more of your Commoner background. In stressful situations, that is when breeding and class come into the picture.

Have you tried rowing a boat at Oxford like Elizabeth? With all the cute boys out there, it will definitely release some of the tension. If you can't afford a ticket for the UK, try the dragon race from Pasig to CamSur.

AMININ!!!

So there. Our Empress and Queen has spoken. If you don't mind your subjunctives, she will wreck havoc worse than the hellish environment that created the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction. Be very, very, afraid! The queen might banish us to the Grammar Gulag.

I have one question though. Your majesty, If you are, indeed British, how did you know Portia Ilagan? Is she one of your esteemed subjects?

    I remain,

    I am hooked to spot.

spototoy has been a very good student worthy of a place at Hogwarts. He went to a decent school but did not pay much attention to her English teacher. We all learn new things everyday. I know I do.

We were doubtless taught that "if" always demands the subjunctive "were". Yes, when something is contrary to fact, like "If I were a scientist.". But you were quite factually wrong, so it has to be "If I was wrong".

BTW, we prefer a Land Rover to a Beemer as we prefer Brits "to" Germans. If you insist on anything that is German, try a Porsche. Remember it is German not French so it is Por-she (as in sherry) and NOT Por-sha (as in Portia Ilagan).

BTW, I suggest you fly in to Gatwick instead of Heathrow (worse than NAIA) should you decide to take a look at the Oxford facilities.

Row. Row. Row your boat. Lovely?
