Arnel Pineda's national anthem rendition chastised by National Historical Institute

Published: Mar 15, 2010 - 9:59am

Journey lead vocalist Arnel Pineda was chastised by the National Historical Institute (NHI) for changing the tone and tempo of the Philippine National Anthem during the Manny Pacquio-Joshua Clottey fight yesterday, March 14, reports GMA News.

NHI Chief of the Heraldry Section Teddy Atienza told GMA News that they would file a complaint against Pineda for his "wrong" version of the song. Section 37 of Republic Act 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code   states that no singer can deviate from the original musical arrangement by composer Julian Felipe. If the complaint is filed before the Department of Justice, Pineda could face one year imprisonment or a fine of P5,000 to P20,000.

Pineda said that he would let his lawyers take care of matter and told GMA News that he had performed the song with all his heart as a proud Filipino citizen.

nhi should review its laws to be relevant to the challenges of times.. yes it's a symbol of heroism.. yes it's a law and laws can be reviewed and revised to be relevant to the current times and it doesn't mean we forgot what it stand for.. you have to accept that the new generation is different from the past ones.. and in order to be relevant and inspire our new generation, we must consider the way approach being 'makabayan' in their own way while keeping the essentials intact.. and insist on our own 'bakya' way.. ang iba talgang nasa position e insist nilang tama sila at yun ang law out of ego without taking time to sit down, reflect and create something to have a 'win-win' situation.. sarado na isip nila kagad.. it's time to change that law.. that said i still remember what our heroes died for and i'm still inspired by their courage and love to our country..

...maybe it's better to ask yourselves when the last time you stood up to honor the national anthem and sing with pride, without twitching or itching for the song to finish?

...there must be a reason why when we were in school there was one person directing everyone to a beat of 4/4 at flag raising ceremonies? maybe because there is a certain way we were all supposed to memorize how to sing the song, regardless of status or job description.

Artists should stop treating the singing of the national anthem as a 'performance.' There is only one way to sing Lupang Hinirang. It is a symbol of the Philippines, singing it is a shared experience. They do our country honor and respect by respecting its symbols. Artists should just lend their voice, not change any part of the song.

Next time, Pacquiao should get a bunch of grade school students to sing before the boxing match if that's allowed.

@ OUTLAW, I can't make an opinion about Jimi Hendrix because I am not familiar with his rendition. We belong to a different set of demographics (i.e. age, rock). LOL

The US does not have any law with regard to the rendition of its National Anthem. However, because of the patriotism of US citizens, public opinion drives the quality of rendition of the singers. Example, Roseann Barr. Her rendition was one of the worst in US history. US companies removed her from its advertising programs. Her showbiz career now? ZERO

@ilikearnel : baka kaya wala silang batas sa tamang pag-awit ng national anthem nila dahil "land of the free and home of the brave?"
@Arnel Pineda : funny point, what if Pacman sang our anthem with his accent?

    The Law is the law.

In the US, they have high regards for their National Anthem since the words in it reflect the nation. Thus, I think it is correct to file complaints to singers who cannot sing it properly. Yes, they are good singers, yes they love our country but loving our country involves following the rules.
In other forums, sabi ng iba, we are in a NEW AGE right now and dapat open minded ang NHI. Others state that parang MARTIAL LAW ang pagiimplement ng batas na ito. Well, for one, etong mga forum posters na ito ay hindi naman namatay para sa Inang Bayan natin. Speaking of Martial Law, did you guys know that J.P. Laurel use it to make sure Filipinos, during the Japanese era, are not outside the streets para hindi sila pagtripan ng mga Hapones?
Our national anthem reflects our nations courage in times of war. Ang national anthem ng ibang bansa, ginawa during their peace time, ung sa atin, ginawa during war time so I think it's tempo should be honored as a marching tempo.

Again, thank you for all the artist who sang our National Anthem and yes, I KNOW you gave your BEST...but your BEST would never top those who gave their LIVES to make sure that we still have OUR OWN national anthem or else, we might be singing another country's national anthem.

    @ Marj,

What's your take on JIMI HENDRIX's high- octane rendition of STAR-SPANGLED BANNER at the WOODSTOCK arts & fair festival?
  • ilikearnel Mar 15 2010 @ 05:15pm Report Abuse
i agree with marj, the law is the law. NHI are just implementors of the law. Anyway, we are so "mapagpatawad" "mapagbigay" and "palampasin mo na" in this country so it think it will just pass.

@haha, probably singing the star spangled banner can be sang in different tunes according to their law. If they have a law that states otherwise, malamang dami ng nakulong sa kanila.
  • Haha Mar 15 2010 @ 03:15pm Report Abuse
It's always like this. Criticize the performer and file a complaint for not singing the "correct" tune/melody etc. ( Although the Martin Nievera's version really do suck, in my opinion.) I believe Arnel gave his best for singing our national anthem and we should be proud of it.
  • HELLO Mar 15 2010 @ 02:32pm Report Abuse
we just need to modify our constitution since it is clearly stiulated there how to sung our national anthem

but who cares? pacman win hahahahaha

  • Marj Mar 15 2010 @ 11:08am Report Abuse
The law is the law. Blame the lawmakers not the implementors of the law.

BTW, my friends in TX who watched the fight inside the arena told me that Arnel sang it without "piyok" - an outstanding performance especially when heard live. Bravo!

What's wrong with a little jazzing up? They're popstars after all. And it's a boxing match with blood and gore, for heaven's sake, not the ballet.
