Earth Hour stats: 15M Filipinos pledge to switch off lights and go unplugged

Published: Mar 27, 2010 - 11:50am

Around 15 million Filipinos have pledged to take part in the Earth Hour, a global effort that enjoins people to give the planet a breather by abstaining from energy use for one hour, GMANews.TV reports.

This evening, households, communities, and various institutions will turn off their lights and unplug their appliances and gadgets from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

According to data on the Philippine World Wildlife Fund (WWF-Philippines) website, "a running total of 1,041 Philippine cities and municipalities have confirmed participation" as of March 25. As such, WWF-Philippines expects this years Earth Hour to top last year's stats.

"In 2009, the Philippines ranked first among 88 nations in terms of local participation in Earth Hour," revealed WWF-Philippines. "Over 10 million Filipinos in 647 cities and municipalities switched off their lights during Earth Hour, saving an estimated 611MWh of electricity, which is equivalent to a temporary shutdown of a dozen coal-fired power-plants."

This year, EarthHour.org reveals that over 100 countries are participating in the hour-long switch off. Now's the perfect time to get creative in the dark.

Rotating brownouts happen because we are preparing for Election 2010 - you know people want an honest and clean election. Earth Hour in the other hand is an annual activity around the world to help mother earth. And the Philippines is supporting for it. One way or another we are conserving energy! One hour is not a year to sacrifice!
