Church to relocate American priest from Tagbilaran after history of sexual misconduct revealed

Published: Apr 19, 2010 - 8:34pm

The Church said today it would relocate an American priest from his ministry in central Tagbilaran City, where he has served for many years, after they found out he was convicted of sexual misconduct when he was a seminarian in 1988, ABS-CBNNews.com reports.

According to a Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) official, Father Joseph Skelton is to be moved to a still undisclosed place.

An article published on the CBCP website reveals that Skelton, who is currently serving as associate pastor of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Calape town of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, had been convicted with sexual misconduct in 1988 while still a seminarian in Detroit, Michigan.

Skelton's transgression is recorded in BishopAccountability.org, which has a Database of Accused Priests.

Bishop Leopoldo Tumulak, 60, who served Bishop of Tagbilaran from November 28, 1992 until his appointment as Military Ordinary on January 15, 2005 said, "Had I known of his conviction I would not have ordained him." He added they at the Diocese of Tagbilaran had observed the prescribed canonical requirements prior to Skelton's ordination.

Meanwhile, Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso said that Skelton has already served his sentence."He was convicted before he became a priest and he has served his penalty of being under probation for three years," he pointed out.

Medroso disclosed that he only learned of Fr. Skelton's past only when a Manila-based newspaper published a story last November 2009.

For his part, reports CBCP News, CBCP President Nereo P. Odchimar said clerical sexual abuse of minors is subject to special instructions "de gravioribus delictis" (on more grievous crimes) under "the competence of the Congregation of the Clergy in Vatican City."

In other words, such cases are sent to Rome for the final decision.

    @ Porkchop,

and why would you deprive them of LUTO NG DIYOS, gusto mo ikaw lang makatikim? Nature has programmed us to tikim the luto. What is wrong is their vow of CELIBACY.
Come to think of it wala ring nangyayari sa Vow of Poverty, and Obedience... kaya matumal na ang career sa Priesthood.

Yeah right. Why don't you wrap yourself with rounds of dynamite so we can explode together. Hahahahaha. I'm using sexual metaphor when I meant "wrap yourself with rounds of dynamite" and "explode together". LOL

When the fatwa was released by the Islamic community against the Satanic Verses, Salman Rushdie became a very very rich man.

I think the Islams take blasphemy quite seriously. Nobody can make jokes or laugh at their god. Unlike the Catholics, who are not fundamental enough to bomb, kill or maim people who speak against their beliefs.

Burqa is so anti-women. Whoever invented that piece of clothing is either a failed designer or a certified misogynist. They look like ninjas with ill-fitting outfits.

Life is good. Nobody wants to be a Salman Rushdie. LOL

    Wait, where's my burqa?

Just to be fair... Excuse me, not just the Catholic Church, what about the other extreme? How come no one question the extremely cruel acts committed by the suicide bombers killing innocent civilians and also the atrocities committed by the Ampatuans in Mindanao? Aren't they members of the Islamic faith?

Of course, we all agree that:
Not all Catholic priests are pedophiles.
And not all Islam are terrorists.
    We can't really generalize.

How come no one would dare make fun of Islam and it is OK to bash the Catholics?

It's time the faithful examine their conscience. DO YOU REALLY NEED THE CHURCH AS PROPS FOR YOUR JOURNEY TO THE NEXT BEYOND?
It's full of SEXUAL PREDATORS, PERVERTS, OPPORTUNISTS, and other MISCREANTS. Will boycott and non-financial support penalize the church?
    or some vigilante action?

Now that Skelton is out of his closet, where are the other abusers? Bishop Yniguez just said that gays are abnormal. From immoral to abnormal. Now, can I cast the most number of stones?

Yes Catholics, challenge yourself to do the right thing as everyone turns a blind eye to these horrid crimes. How come sexual offenders who are not priests are prosecuted and go to jail while these priests are merely relocated and exempt from the law? Tell the truth, speak up, fight for the rights of the victims. It's the right thing to do. How can you abide by an institution that does nothing. "It's a sin—unless we're the ones committing it" is what your leaders seem to say. it's not just a sin, it's a crime! Sin verguenza!

It's a challenging time to be Catholic, to say the least.
