VIDEO: Charice Pempengco on CNN, asks Oprah to be her godmother

Published: May 20, 2010 - 11:49am

International news channel CNN featured singer Charice Pempengco, reports abs-cbnNews.com. Pempengco was interviewed by reporter Shannon Cook in a feature entitled "4'9" with a towering voice."

Pempengco sat down with Cook and told her about how she first wanted to be a dancer but discovered that she could sing at age four.   "My first song was 'My Heart Will Go On.' Then my mom discovered me singing on top of the table," Charice told Cook.

Pempengco told CNN that her self-titled debut album reflects the "new me." She is currently promoting the album in the United States, which she launched on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" on May 11, a day after her 18th birthday.

When asked about Oprah Winfrey saying she is "the most talented girl in the world," Charice said: "Sincerely I can't believe it. Until now, I'm shaking. I'm just so thankful to her, to all the people who helped me. To my idol Celine Dion, she told me that we have [many] things in common. To think that she said that, I was like, 'Oh my God!' [I'm] just starting and she is a legendary singer."

Pempengco who is set to have her joint baptism and confirmation with younger brother Carl this week also invited American host Oprah Winfrey to be one of their godparents. Charice and Carl will be baptized as Catholics in an undisclosed location on Saturday, May 22, reports abs-cbnNews.com. However, Winfrey has not confirmed if she would be able to attend the event.

The siblings will have 24 pairs of godparents which includes ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III and president Charo Santos-Concio, broadcaster Karen Davila, Boy Abunda, Kris Aquino, as well as entertainment writers Ricky Lo and Jobert Sucaldito.

hello people of the world...just bear in mind even those respected and native English speakers speak ungrammatically in some instances ...how much more for a nation /person learning as a second language...lets not be judgemental and think about yourself while learning a new language or look at yourself when u were still a beginner b4 being expert now... why not rather praise any accomplishment wether big or small...atleast she is doing well and willing to learn new things...I SALUTE HER...we love u CHARICE...

like what Tita Aida said, accent is VERY important. it matters, even if we want to believe otherwise. of course, there are exceptions, like the Salma Hayeks of the world, whom people think have very sexy accents. but they happen to be very few.

I agree. So what if she has an accent?
English is not her first language. I hate it when Filipinos 'cringe' when other Filipinos have thick accents, not because it makes them unintelligible but because you look down on them.

I know I already said this a couple of times. Grammar, family background, and social status are very important in the Philippine setting. To test this, try visiting Phil. and international blogs. Read the comment sections and you will notice that it is only in the Phil. blogs that the grammar and spelling police are actively working.

In the U.S., grammar, spelling, family background, and social status are unimportant. Talent and accent are very important. I am not a speech expert but I noticed that she pulled the interview with flying colors in the accent department with just a little room for improvement.

Accent is what separates the U.S. locals from the fobs (fresh off the boat or immigrants or visitors). The cute mestizo/conio look and English accent in Manila won't pull it in America. No offense meant but they will be grouped with the Latinos (read: illegals).

However, there is one very important common requirement in both Hollywood and Manila: connections.

It is when she does interviews that I find myself cringing. She needs a better stylist and a good english teacher...
I hope she didn\'t renew her endorsement with Snoopy clothing.
