Church official calls Pinoy voters "immature" for choosing candidates who support the RH bill

Published: May 27, 2010 - 7:41am

MB.com.ph reports that Msgr. Pedro Quitorio III, the media director of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said that "the re-election of pro-Reproductive Health (RH) bill lawmakers into office only shows the Filipino voters lack of maturity."

"Our electorate is not mature yet in a sense that their choices are not issue-oriented," Quitorio told MB.com.ph. The CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Family and Life (ECFL) discouraged the faithful from voting for candidates who are anti-life and family such as those lawmakers supportive of the RH bill.

The RH bill backs the use of contraceptives and, thus, is in conflict with the Church's stance. Quitorio said that they will continue to "monitor" the pro-RH bill officials. He also emphasized that the Church will "continue to be vigilant against any move that will destroy life and the Filipino family."

You guys are barking on the wrong tree never less an article. The whole point of the article is the statement made by the churchman that Filipinos who voted pro RH bill politicos lacks maturity. Who gave him the right to call these majority of people as such? Sure he is bound by the so called freedom of speech to say that at least to a few. But to advertise it in media to be read by all is pure arrogance. he should know better.

Yung isa journalist daw eh puro "wrong grammar ka " ang atake!

This happened last week. After election, a Channel 2 reporter talked about those showbiz personalities who won and those who did not make it. Her closing statement was, "Patunay lang na ang mga Filipinong botante ay matatalino at hindi na basta-bastang bumoboto ng mg artista"

What a dumb JOURNALIST!Mas maraming nanalong artista kaysa sa natalo.

Lack of maturity as well for the church to judge those who oppose the RH Bill... Let us remember the Church has their own issue to settle like the molestations done by the priest all over the world... It was confirmed by the Pope, and based on reports very reliable reports that they paid for the victim to be silent and hide the priest who committed sins. Don't be Hypocrite!!! Settle your issues first before you meddle with government issues!!!!

I'm not saying that we can't control our libidos, sure we can. But the Church is being too unrealistic in its approach. Sure, I believe in their: celibacy before marriage, sex inside marriage, etc. But by & large, can all the Filipinos particularly the young with raging hormones? C'mon....

Absalom, I disagree with your latter statements. On the contrary, I agree with the Church in the sense that human beings shouldn't act on their bodily appetites. That topic can merit a whole essay but let's not go that far. It's not a matter religion, but more of philosophical anthropology. Human beings are separated from animals because we have rationality (Even Aristotle calls us rational animals), which prevents us from giving in to our instincts and appetites completely. We can't just keep doing the act because it is in our biological desires. Because basically, we're not animals.

Again, I have no issue with the Church advocating certain beliefs such as banning condoms, and I have other reasons why I'm against the RH Bill. I'm just irked by the statement they made.
  • Absalom May 28 2010 @ 09:53pm Report Abuse
    @sg,

You were asking why I consider the Church a threat to National Security?
Well, I consider ANYBODY/ANYTHING that undermines and threathens the well-being of our citizens a security threat. And the church certainly qualifies. You ask why? Because of their WARPED SENSE of IDEA REGARDING HUMAN SEXUALITY. It's their abysmal ignorance regarding this that inadvertently drives us down the ROAD TO PERDITION! Consider what they are prescribing: NO USE OF CONDOMS & OTHER FORMS OF ARTIFICIAL BIRTH CONTROL DURING SEXUAL INTERCOURSE. Do you get the implications? It's like playing Russian ROULETTE.
What about those deadly viruses and other STD-related disease? what about our galloping population growth, particularly among the masa who breed like rats ? The church confuses human sexuality with the likes of lower animal forms.
Animals cannot copulate for 365 days. They only have a rut period or a mating season, and after that, they are no longer interested in sex. The church should address theie spiel to animals which is appropriate because they only copulate strictly for preservation of the species. Compare that to humans. Theoretically, humans can copulate for 365 days a year ( even with menstruation). And for humans it's more for pleasure rather than procreation ( why do you think the female genitalia has a clitoris?)But the church rejects this biological facts and insists on their dogma, which runs counter to common sense ang govt' population program.
    Isn't that something subversive?

Its okay I guess to molest little boys but not okay to be responsible about sex. msgr please tell that to the starving kids that proliferate all over the country just because the church says its a sin to be sexually responsibe. you cannot stop people from having sex - at least be mature about it and take charge. good luck with having birth control via the "natural way" as mandated by the clergy.

But I'm still interested in your reasons as to why you think that the Catholic Church is a threat to this.

I get where your coming from with your negativity towards the institutions of society, but some good vibes are always more than welcome. :) It isn't completely their fault they're dysfunctional. And in all fairness to them, they're trying.

    @sg,

Negative views on our prominent institutions? is it palpable? obvious? of course I'm negative! who wouldn't be? We used to be the second richest country in Asia ( second to Japan)in the 50s. Our other Asian neighbors look to us with awe & envy. Today, where are we? competing with Somalia? Bangla Desh? Ethiopia? And who is to blame? of course our institutions!

We might not be on the same page about national security. To me, national security means that the citizens have enough food to eat, safe, educated, well-informed, from cradle to the grave medical care, in short, as rich and wealthy as our Asian neighbors like Singapore,Malaysia, South Korea etc...If a nation is IMPOVERISHED,it lacks national security. Of course the traditional meaning is still there....

Since yabangan na eto, let me say my piece...

As a former graduate student of an imported, overpriced international MA in mass communication (jejejeje!), I believe that the Philippine media, in the name of so-called objectivity, has given the Catholic Church far too much power by listening and giving voice to whatever crap they would want to say. At a certain point, the media has got to recognize this fact: the Catholic church in the country no longer exerts any power over the populace. There are good Catholics who have used the pill and believe that what the country needs is for people to stop breeding like rabbits.

I have ceased to believe that objectivity should be practiced by the media. I'm all for taking sides, and for espousing causes which would greatly benefit the people. Objectivity, one of my favorite academics, makes the media appear disinterested to the public. And from an economic standpoint, it's not very profitable.

    I, thank you. Bow.
  • blitzkrieg May 27 2010 @ 09:44pm Report Abuse
So to you, a group of individuals voicing out their opinion on a particular matter is subversion? Moreover, a society without a law similar to the RH bill is doomed to a fate of chaos and lawlessness? I guess that makes the Vatican City one of the most chaotic societies in the world, since they do not have such a legislation in place. How could we have been so blind to that reality?! GASP! I mean, it makes perfect sense! The Vatican City's crime rates are off the charts! (insert: tons of sarcasm)

There's a huge difference between reading between the lines, and over exaggerating.

I no longer expect you to answer the questions I have raised in this post, and in the last. It was a mistake to feed an internet troll.
  • sg May 27 2010 @ 09:41pm Report Abuse
Absalon: You have such a negative view of the prominent institutions in our society. Media as dumbing our society, education "stinking", and the Church as creating an army of zombies. Out of curiosity, could you explain to me why you think the Catholic Church is an issue of national security? We seem to have different.. conceptions on what national security entails.

@blitzkrieg: YABANG!!!! Although I do agree, even the Bible says and I quote "And He said to them, "Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." (Luke 20:25). I don't see anything wrong with the Church advocating something they feel strongly about, but to call the voting populace immature on mere basis that it does not agree with their beliefs. They have to remember that each individual is given the freedom to think on their own.

So to you, a mere opinion of a member of the clergy constitutes reality? Nowhere in the article does it state those figures you claim. Plus, you said "the church wants it to double to 200 million?" Not only does this statement lack logic, but also lacks truthfulness. Again, those magic numbers you came up with are nowhere to be found. Why would the church want more "zombie" Filipinos? If you understood the article correctly, they are disturbed by the "immaturity" of our people. I'm also surprised you started blabbering about communists and other armed separatists, even if they have nothing to do with the argument.

I have so much respect for the military and people in the field of national security. If you belong to either industries, I am very surprised (and disturbed).

How is this matter related to National Security? You need to justify your statements because they make no sense and sound like something a 16 year old would say.

Anyway, I hate it when the Church meddles excessively in politics. Does the word "secularism" not mean anything anymore? They shouldn't meddle in politics, much like the same way the State does not meddle in religious dogma. I'm not saying these people cannot voice out their opinions. I mean, they are citizens of this country. But if they voice out their opinion, they should voice it out as citizens/as Filipinos, not as Priests or other members of the clergy. In interviews, they shouldn't say "The Church does not support....", rather, they should say "I do not support...".
  • danburst May 27 2010 @ 11:28am Report Abuse
One more thing @Absalom, learn to distinguish news from entertainment when you criticize the Philippine Media. What I'm getting is, you are generalizing the different media based on their value to the reader/listener/audience.

Do you get dumb from watching ANC's Storyline? Or do you get dumb watching "reality" shows and taking them as they are?

Do you get dumb reading Conrado De Quiros? Or do you get dumb reading tabloids and believe that crime and the misfortune of others is but a story?

The thing is @Absalom, it is easy to point your finger at the media because it is the obvious source of information and entertainment. But once you turn-off the TV and fold your newspaper, it is still upon the person, his/her family, friends or teachers on how to make sense of what this irresponsible BS media feeds him/her.
  • danburst May 27 2010 @ 11:13am Report Abuse

As a journalism graduate, I take offense with what you said. Journalism is hard work. As much as the media outfits that you mentioned are owned by private people, journalism as an industry is guided by ethics not by their owners' money.

If we're not doing our job properly as a watchdog for the country, we probably shouldn't exist. But we do exist because as information providers, we are able to do our job well - without bias.

PS Please do check your grammar.
