Catholic bishops believe new bill protecting unborn children will nullify RH Bill

Published: Jul 15, 2010 - 8:30am

Catholic bishops are "inclined to support" the newly filed House Bill 13 titled "Protection of the Unborn Child Act 2010," believing it will nullify the Reproductive Health Bill, reports GMANews.tv.

Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said in an article posted on the Union of Catholic Asian News (UCANews) website, "Most bishops are happy with the bill. It is in line with Church teachings on when life begins. I've already urged house representatives from Batangas to support the bill." Arguelles is a member of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Family and Life.

"The bill recognizes fetuses as human beings from the moment of conception (when the sperm fertilizes the egg)," Paranaque Rep. Roilo Golez, who filed the bill, said. "They are therefore entitled to a human's right to life, safety and protection, before they reach and while they are in the womb." Those who commit abortion would be imprisoned for up to six months, fined up to P50,000, or both, should the bill be passed.

According to an article posted on Pro-Life Philippines' website, Golez' bill "leaves artificial contraception out of the scene." House Bill 13 also upholds the rights of parents of pregnant minors over the government's in matters "involving the safety, protection and welfare of the unborn child and the mother." This is in contrast to the RH Bill that seeks to mandate age-appropriate sex education for fifth graders up to high school seniors, according to the Pro-Life Philippines article.

Are you ready to give up your earthly materials things and give it to the poor? You are more than welcome! who is preventing you from becoming another St.Francis of Asisi? As for mouths & minds,I don't think the poor can think prpoperly because they lack proper nutrition.Their minds are pre-occupied where to get their next meal.If you review history most of those who led social changes came from the middle-class. They have the capability to meditate on the human condition. If you think there is no correlation between Population growth & poverty you are grossly naive.

Hello, JELLY. I guess that IS the problem here. Most people are beginning to see others, particularly the poor, simply as mouths and not as minds. Why are we diminishing the potential of people to rise above life's challenges? I would like to ask, does having a large population the REAL problem in the first place? It is easy to point out that yes, having more people share a single pie would mean smaller shares for everybody. So why not bake more pies? The problem is, we are only looking at one side of the equation.

I don't understand why people need to criticize the Church for standing up for their beliefs and their values. Why do they have to be taunted for speaking about what they believe is true?

Bringing up children into this world is definitely not an easy task. The Church recognizes this and it is for this reason that it supports natural family planning. They should not be ridiculed because they are standing by their faith and are simply reminding their members of what their religious conviction asks of them.

I agree! Contraception nga = contra-conception, so asaan ang unborn child?
  • J. Z. Andrada Jul 15 2010 @ 03:56pm Report Abuse
Argument is totally irrelevant for RH advocates because as far as we are concerned, contraception does not kill any life because there is no conception to begin with.
