New York magazine site says Botoxed Charice missed the message of Glee, Perez Hilon calls it "SICK!!!"

Published: Jul 20, 2010 - 7:08am

NYMag.com says in this Vulture bit posted on July 19: "Filipina singer Charice, dubbed by Oprah the 'Most Talented Girl in the World,' is scheduled to appear on the upcoming season of Glee as a foreign-exchange student and rival to Lea Michele's Rachel Berry. To prepare, the 18-year-old has gotten Botox and an anti-aging procedure 'to look fresh on camera.' A 'celebrity cosmetic surgeon' said the operation was intended to make Charice's 'naturally round face' more narrow, all but forcing Glee creator Ryan Murphy to rewrite Charice's episode to contain the message: It's important to love and embrace one's naturally round face as it is.'"

The hit Golden-Globe-winning musical-comedy-drama TV series centers on high school outcasts who join the school glee club where they find solace and fulfillment in their musical talents rather than their looks or popularity. The show tackles issues high school students (and even the older teachers on the show) have to deal with, such as identity, acceptance, conviction, integrity, and even body confidence.

Among the readers' comments on the story: From NYCBUNNY: "nice way to promote naturalness. great role model...and what would Oprah say?? FAIL." LYRA127 wrote, "Uh she looks like 12 in that pic, so any fresher and they'll have to write her as an elementary school singing prodigy," while JOURGY said, "I'm surprised that I'm reading about how she got Botox and not a nose job to put in that bridge! Sadly, I believe a large number of Filipinos are particularly vain/extremely self-conscious people who are obsessed with beauty more than Americans."

Meanwhile, news about Charice's Botox procedure has landed on the websites of CNN, People, Us Weekly, AP and Just Jared, and Perez Hilton, who called it "SICK!!!" and  wrote, "Who the eff would do that to an effing teenager in good conscience?!" He quoted Charice as saying  she was "very proud to be an Asian, very proud to be Filipino," then remarked, "Obviously not or she would accept her naturally round face. Get some help, bb - or you're not gonna last very long!"

These news reports say "local cosmetic dermatiologist" Dr. Vicki Belo explained that the Botox and Thermage treatments aimed to "alter the shape of the singer's 'naturally round face,' but according to People.com, "The singer's rep confirms she had Botox, but says it was not for cosmetic purposes. 'She's had Botox for some jaw pain she's experiencing.' (Botox can be used to ease pain from TMJ.) However, she noted that Charice will look different on the show: 'She had her hair colored at the Brad Johns Studio at Elizabeth Arden,' says her rep. 'That's the only vaguely cosmetic thing she's done.'"

The rep told Us Weekly that the point of the procedure was "to relieve a jaw problem similar to TMJ...It did not hurt; it relieved the pain...You've seen her face - she doesn't have a wrinkle in it so she wouldn't need it for cosmetic purposes. The Glee people are thrilled with the way she looks which is why she got the part."

    @erin

Hi Erin. I thought you're a local director too but thanks for clarifying that (re: Hollywood directors who didn't like the way Botox affected facial expressions).

Nung una kong mabalitaan na nagpa-Botox nga si Charice, hindi maganda ang pakiramdam ko. Bakit hindi? Ginawa siyang stepping stone ni Vicki Belo. Tama si Perez, fame whore nga si Belo. Well, if your boyfriend is a porn star, what difference does it make if she's a fame whore (re: Dancing with the Stars)? At bakit naman nagpagamit si Charice? Dahil di sya makatanggi for the sake of being nice? Ayoko namang isiping tinutukan siya or under duress when made to do the Botox procedure. It's just that (maybe) Belo won't take a "no" for an answer.

I'm neither hater nor fan. Just a spectator. Whether Charice did the right thing or not, there would always be people that would try to put her down (re: Little Big Star). Kaya nga tinawag na crab mentality di ba?

I've been following you because i thought you were pure and so different from others..but I was wrong. I actually BLAME YOUR MOM on this also..why did she let you do this, you're only 18.

The tmj or jaw pain claims are suspicious. On the video, both the doctor and Charice admit that the procedures are for cosmetic purposes. To recap:

Dr Belo says: "due to excess gum chewing, Charice's cheeks/face expanded. The botox will reduce Charice's face/ cheeks."

Charice: "I want to look fresh when being filmed for Glee"
  • elaprty Jul 22 2010 @ 12:08am Report Abuse
it is actually her choice if she wanted to undergo the procedure just so she would feel more confident or whatever her reasons are, so lets not judge.

As for diction or pronunciation or whatever, it shouldnt really matter if she has a thick accent or not, its part of the EXCHANGE STUDENT charm, and besides, regular americans don't laugh at others wring pronunciations and diction, I think we Filipinos are more prone to that, so it should not be an issue, we should embrace what Filipino accent she has.

But if it was really GLEE's recommendation to have charice undergo the Botox Procedure, then they should be the one who should feel ashamed of what they asked a young girl to do, for a show that promotes being happy with what you are and what you have, having charice undergo botox will just be plain ironic.

anyway these are just my opinion.

Magsitigil kayo. Pakialamera kayo.

natural lang ang pagpapagawa ng mukha sa entertainment industry, dito man or sa ibang bansa. noon pa man, as in decades ago, may isang sikat na "intl local" star na nagpagawa ng ilong para bagayan ang role. i think mas bagets pa sha kay charice that time. the only difference now is lantaran na lahat. and i guess para makalibre si charice, pumayag siya na may camerang nakatutok during the procedure. dun sya nagkamali.

There is a lot of Charice bashing going on on the internet. Are you guys really sure she does not have TMJ? I read online that one of the first things doctors / dentists look at when diagnosing TMJ is whether the jaw muscles are enlarged or swollen. That gives them a clue, then they look at your teeth. Perhaps someone from the medical field can give his professonal evaluation of Charice's jaw area. Just looking at the videos of the botox procedure, it shows that botox was injected into her jaw muscle just below her ear. I think if they were concerned about wrinkles instead, they would have injected it into areas where wrinkles occur like her forehead, the outside of the eyes, or the cheek area near the mouth. I hope someone with medical training can comment on this. Thanks.

Glee is a show about loving your natural self. How can Charice tell people to love themselves naturally when you've had work done yourself? Did Amber Riley get liposuction? No. Did Leah Michele get a nose job? No. The botox thing was a really bad move. I think that until she addresses this she will not be able to get out of this scandal. No one's buying the TMJ crap because there's a video of Belo talking about doing this to make her look more "fresh" for the camera. Belo isn't in any position to comment on other people's looks. Hello?! Has she seen herself? She probably doesn't have a mirror in her house due to fear of disintegrating.
  • i_m_anonymous Jul 21 2010 @ 01:06pm Report Abuse

I am for Charice for doing what it takes to improve her looks but does she really have to publicize it??? Sort of like showing off? or is she really that naive?? of course her mom is also a product of Belo but not much done there !!

It is a bad example and sends the wrong message to all youngsters and her fans. Why the need to enhance her looks (whether cosmetic or non-invasive)? What is wrong with a naturally round face? What does that message about her face shape to a teen's self-esteem?

Glee is about the outcasts. Those who are not accepted in the mainstream because they are different. Charice should have celebrated her uniqueness.

It sad that Charice's handlers succumbed to the pressure and superficiality of Hollywood. She is 18. She should have been advised well. Now this incident can be traumatizing for such a young girl, and this could have all been avoided.

In short, the damage is done.

  • danevillaluz Jul 20 2010 @ 04:50pm Report Abuse
I don't think Charice really wanted to have botox. I think she was forced to undergo the procedure by her management or Vicki Belo. She's 18, fresh-looking and has absolutely no signs of aging. Heck, even her round face needs no alterations. But when you're young and famous, there will always be superiors who will force you to do this and that regardless whether it would benefit or harm your career, and you can't help but be tempted. Sadly, this is the reality in show business in any country, be it in the US or the Philippines.

Obviously they realized that publishing news about the Belo procedures was a huge mistake, thus they are looking for an excuse – “Oh, let’s just say that Charice has been having TMJ, that way getting the Botox would be acceptable!!” Too late. The damage by Belo’s PR has been done. It has affected how foreigners look at Charice and more importantly, how the world sees Filipinos. We are now superficial Asians stuck with the Western notion of beauty. Thank you, Belo.

Please go easy on Charice..she is just 18 years old..if you want to blame anybody for her decision to have a botox treatment..blame Dra.Vicky Belo..she was the one who convinced Charice to undergo the procedure..also blame her mother for giving her consent...
Charice is just like any other ordinary teenager despite her fame...she can easily be swayed specially by older people.Stop berating her..As a Filipino I wish her all the luck in the world..She is a great singer and that's what matters.

hi marietta, im not a director... its u.s. directors/casting directors. i've seen an episode of e! that interviews a famous casting director saying that a lot of hollywood tv/movie directors no longer want to work with botox-ed actor/actresses simply because they no longer have any facial expressions and they no longer look natural and fresh. kate winslet also said that as an actress she won't do botox because she won't be able to do the facial expressions she needs to acting. i guess la greta and ruffa should learn from that.

As a fan, I personally do not agree with what she did, if it is true that she did it for cosmetic purposes, but I am not surprised that she did it. After you read all the mean-spirited comments people hurled at her for the last years regarding her looks/appearance, you will understand why. Any normal 18 year old would feel conscious about her body. At that age, any girl is not yet comfortable as to who she is. With Charice, that is magnified 100x since she is scrutinized at every point.

Charice haters, you know who you are. After bashing her about her looks, now you are saying natural beauty is best. That is BS and hypocrisy!
  • Marietta Jul 20 2010 @ 01:01pm Report Abuse
erin said "a lot of us directors no longer cast botox-ed."

Thank God. But then how do you explain Gretchen Barretto being cast in a primetime show? Hehehe. Peace! Gretchen shouldn't have had anything done. She was already beautiful before whatever it was that she had done.

As for Charice...siguro she was caught at a weak moment. The collective bile produced by her detractors is no joke. Forgive her for being insecure (if indeed she is), just as people forgave Michael Jackson for his ever-changing face. Tama na yang Botox, Charice. You don't need that.

As for being "insecure," if we must all recall President Gloria Arroyo had her boobs done.

People who attack Charice for her looks...what do you want? I think you just want to see her fail for one reason or another.

Good luck, Charice! I'm not your fan but I'd like to defend your right to shine...even when most people prefer to throw mud at you.

I've been reading all your comments on the whole Botox issue and honestly, I find it interesting how everyone is jumping the bandwagon of self-righteousness on this one. Obviously, botox has a negative stigma attached to it. But has anyone really researched that it's an effective medical treatment for TMJ and jaw tension?

Another thing regarding others' speil about Glee being "about people from all walks of life, who each face unique challenges," and that somehow, Charice missed the point of the show... -- well, it almost made me teary-eyed...except for the fact the Glee is really the same Hollywood formula -- "the fat black girl is a TOKEN and that ALL the VAPID fans seem to draw their attention to the HOT GUYS AND GIRLS of the show. Right. Exactly. Glee is Ugly Betty 2.0, where all the characters are hot and Betty seems to be the backdrop. It's simply a damn show using the "underdog" trend going on, while using the same old Hollywood formula of bringing eye-candy..."

I'll just wait for the smoke clears, to be honest. This is pure media sensationalism and I hope you see that.
