Filipino international pop singer Charice Pempengco, 18, is officially joining the American TV hit show Glee's second season. Charice Tweeted on June 22: "It's official. I'm on Glee (next season) but story behind it. When [the] rumor came out, it wasn't true...but then after that, I tried to audition. And i made it!!! Let's Party!!!!"
"Well, it’s true now!" reports Entertainment Weekly. "Sources confirm to me exclusively that the international pop star is signed, sealed, and delivered to recur next season as a foreign exchange student whose killer vocals get Rachel (Lea Michele) contemplating murder," says EW columnist Michael Ausiello. In May, The Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted Charice's local manager Grace Mendoza to have said that Charice would be joining Glee, but Charice denied it at the time.
The international teen sensation rose to fame when comedienne/talk show host Ellen de Generes stumbled upon a Youtube video of Charice singing on the Korean talent competition Star King in 2007, and flew her to the US to guest on Ellen. Another guesting on Oprah followed, where host Oprah Winfrey called her "the most talented girl in the world" and took a special interest in Charice's career. Oprah endorsed her to songwriter and producer David Foster, who has launched the careers of Celine Dion, Josh Groban and Michael Bublé. This year, her debut album "Charice" is No.8 on the Billboard Charts. Charice has been selected to sing the Philippine national anthem at President-elect Noynoy Aquino III's inauguration on June 30.

I think it will be interesting to have a Filipino represent on a show as mainstream as Glee. There are always hispanics, oriental asians, african americans. Filipinos have never been represented properly, and she is as Filipino as they come.
I dont mind Charise's accent one bit, and I hope she does not try to hide it just to appease all of you. Frankly, what do we care if she does not sound American? She's not. She is Filipino, and her first language is Filipino.
We seem to be making a really big deal about things that dont really matter :) What matters is that a young girl from a simple background had a big dream, and it is coming true. Shouldn't we just be happy for one of our own? :) -
@v
Yuck may naligaw na ipis dito! Shoo! Shoo! Pak!!! Peste! -
Can she sing? YES, definitely!
Can she act? Don't know yet...
Let's wait for the season 2 of Glee for us to find out :) -
@igeramos - regarding that annoyingly pompous marj b*tch or bot or whatever..honga naman.kaya mabuti pa dedmahin na lang yan.nyweiz she obviously has a miserable and woefully misanthropic life as it is kaya palaging feeling holier-than-thou ang mga freaking comments niya sa spot.ph para nga nman mapansin ang hitad.
-

@ disappointed, The Koreanization of Los Angeles has materialized already even before the Koreanization of Metro Manila has even started.
As usual, Metro Manila is 2000 and late so no surprise there.
Glee is Talents Unlimited. No race card here. -
a Marj: i'll bet you'll get floored when you see BoA on Glee.
-
As for Charice, she deserves all the luck, fortune and honor she's garnering not just for herself but for the rest of the country as well. Keep up the good work and remain true to yourself.
-
I think Marj is not a human being but an Internet Bot, a third-party software that has nothing to do with spot.ph that is utilized to generate this kind of mass-hysteria and reaction. Therefore she has no nationality but only an IP address.
Come to think of it, I actually agree with her/him/it. The problem lies in the fact that we all speed-read that we actually miss the point.
He/she/it actually said: "America loves Charice. Glee is for US primetime. Who cares about the Philippine viewers?"
So it is not Anti-Charice at all! The Fox Network, where Glee originates from, is not actually making money from the Philippine audience but only through the subscription from cable TV, carried by Star Network HK. Well, maybe, indirectly from a Philippine pizza company that starts with a letter G, which is one of the major sponsor for the Philippine transmission.
So guys, lets not be too harsh on Marj. She means well. No matter how petty, she has all the right to b*tch, as you have the right to b*tch back at her. Come to think of it, I think Marj is a full-blown woman of substance and honesty, because she speaks her mind.
Sorry Marj, I really don't know you. I'm sorry for referring to you not as a human being and an Internet Bot. It was meant to be a joke.
Keep on posting and eliciting negative reactions. It's good for the traffic. Traffic means revenue and revenue means our favorite Spot.PH, will continue to deliver our daily doze of digital data, which we all crave for. -
...Marj is still a douche
-
i just hope that she plays a FILIPINO exchange student sa Glee.
-
Thanks Rui. They don't get it. I felt like Salman Rushdie. I call their reaction as out of place patriotism born in the gutters. Typically the likes of Lolit if not Joebert. LOL
The bottom line: I cannot over emphasize my admiration for Charice. It's a given. However, Charice is in Glee because of her talent not because she is a Filipina. The Philippine viewers can continue to love Glee (or Charice) but if it doesn't capture the minds and hearts of the US audience (read: rating), it will be off the air. -
I agree with Aki. Though I would say that marj could have chosen wiser words, some of the other comments that followed were highly irrelevant and unnecessary.
If Filipinos were to squabble in heated debate (making no significant rebuttals save for ad hominems and the like) all for some TV show, it just implies that Pinoy pride is quite shallow and selfish. (I'm not saying it is. That's just the impression I'm getting.)
I know we've got freedom of speech and all that, but I implore everyone to please choose their words wisely. If ever necessary, express your dislike towards a particular argument, not the person making the argument.
Anyway, I'm glad that Glee is becoming an even bigger hit, and I really hope that Charice portrays her character at stellar quality. Even though she's got killer vocals, it's still going to be a challenge for her to match up to the rest of the Glee cast in terms of acting. -
I don't get why everyone's ganging up on Marj. She has a valid point naman. Think of it the other way around: ang Pinas ba, pag gumagawa ng shows (ASAP, SOP, even that "first ever" musical Emir), iniisip ang kapakanan Kano na viewers?
Icing on top of the cake na lang yung pumatok sila sa ibang bansa, RP included. Yun lang naman ang sinasabi ni Marj.
No one needs to get all b*tchy on anyone. It's not about not being proud of being Pinoy (She just said herself she's a fan of Charice, what more do you guys want?), it's just that not not everything is about us (Filipinos/the RP), you guys.
We hardly ever need to turn on each other like this either. What does THAT have to say about Pinoy pride? :( -
-
..I feel sorry for marj for acting like a total douche
-
Congrats to Charice!!! I'm excited to watch her on Glee!!!! :D
-
@marj = reyna ng mga super kulang sa pansin na internet troll hahaha....akala mo kung sinong magaling kung maka-comment ang hitad khit saang thread.feeling intellectual ka dyan, eh mega boba ka nman umintindi sa comments ng iba..at pwede ba, you are so hypocritically self-righteous kaya do us all a big big big favor and shut your pie hole na lang, dai dai dai...
charice, love love love you so much more!mabuhay ang pinoy talent at lahat ng pinoy viewers!! -
@marj - are you Filipino?.. shame on you if you are!!!.. your words are so degrading, you should be happy because we are happy that another asian has penetrated a US show and take note a Filipino.. i'm proud because she's going to showcase her talent and it's a very rare opportunity..
-
I like Charice. Both Glee and Charice are popular in the US. Hollywood doesn't need the inputs of Philippine viewers. Those are statement of facts. Why should I watch my words?
It is like saying that Macy's should invite Lea or Charice during its Thanksgiving Day Parade so that the people of the Philippines will enjoy their turkey dinner. No way.
The US audience will be in the premium seats. It is good enough if the Philippine audience will be in the bleacher seats. -
I don't watch this series but I know the next season will be the second, not the third. Season one just had a long hiatus.
-
Great job Charice. Good if Glee is huge in the Philippines.
Keep in mind that Philippine concerns is not in the radar screen of Hollywood when packaging US programs. This is not ABS. This is definitely not ASAP. -
@marj: watch your word girl.. maybe Philippine viewers don't mean anything to American people but for the Filipino people having their own kind to star in a foreign tv is a huge achievement..I for one don't care about American shows..I just patronize it if i saw my own kind bearing the name of my country...kalurkey ka!
-
Whoah ang taray ng lola niyo!
-
Glee is HUGE in the Philippines!
-
America loves Charice. Glee is for US primetime. Who cares about the Philippine viewers?
-
Nooooooo wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Ohwell. Good for her.
