Pres. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, the first bachelor to hold the highest position in the country, said divorce is "a no-no," reports Inquirer.net. According to ABS-CBNNews.com, he also added that he "definitely cannot support the Las Vegas stereotype wherein you get married in the morning and get divorced in the afternoon."

However, Aquino said legally separated couples should be allowed to remarry after it has been determined through "very stringent" standards that they do have irreconcilable differences, according to Manila Bulletin. Under the Family Code of the Philippines, only annulled couples may remarry, while legally separated ones are only allowed to live separately. Aquino said in a report by Inquirer.net, "I do recognize that there (are married couples who) really cannot stay together  no matter what interventions or counseling is done."

Just this month, women's party-list group Gabriela re-filed a bill legalizing divorce in the Philippines, saying it could help stop domestic violence in the country, reports Inquirer.net.

Although the President divulged his "personal position" on divorce, he did not comment on his celebrity sister Kris' petition to nullify her marriage with James Yap. According to Manila Bulletin, he said, "If I say any opinion, it might influence the workings of the court and the fiscals."
