Scientists and academicians volunteer to create Philippines' flood hazard map

ABS-CBNNews.com reports that a group of scientists and academicians have volunteered to create a nationwide flood hazard map available online at Nababaha.com. According to Nababaha.com, they are creating the map by using Ondoy-like flood simulations through Flo2d, a flood routing application software approved by the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In Metro Manila, only three cities have been mapped: Valenzuela, Marikina, and Quezon City. The map shows that large areas of Marikina are prone to floods as well as the MRT stations on Quezon Avenue and in Cubao.

Only 40 percent of the map has been finished, and the group of volunteers would like to ask the government for support in mapping the remaining areas. Dr. Alfredo Mahar Lagmay from the National Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of the Philippines, told TV Patrol World, "Kung magagawa natin 'to sa buong Pilipinas  at masusukat ang mga ilog, lupa, bato (at iba pa), mapapaganda pa natin ang mga flood simulation (We could enhance the flood simulation by traveling all over the Philippines and measuring pertinent areas like the rivers and lands)." Regular updates are needed as well since urbanization can change the lay of the land.
