Pete Jacobs of Australia and Magari Tisseyre of Canada won the top prizes in the male and female division, respectively, of the Cobra Ironman 70.3 Philippines on August 22 at the CamSur Watersports Complex in Camarines Sur, reports Inquirer.net. Jacobs dominated all the phases of the triathlon--swimming, biking and running--and clocked in an overall 3:58:41. "This is my strongest race ever... I just swam away from the pack and ran fast. I had an awesome day today and the heat didn't bother me."
Jacobs bumped off last year's champ Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand who finished at 4:05:54. "The heat was really crazy and it was survival mode for me all the time It was undoubtedly the hottest day of the week and to Pete's credit, he really had an unbelievable race," Bozzone told Inquirer.net.
Tisseyre finished at 4:27:01, topping the women's division and beating Sydney Olympics 2000 silver medallist Michellie Jones of the United States (4:29:23), according to Inquirer.net. She told ABS-CBNNews.com, "I really needed a race like this because I'm building up for the World Championship Instead of feeling tired, I felt like it was really refreshing for me."

24 Oras video: Hundreds join Ironman 70.3 Philippine triathlon
The inaugural Ironman 70.3 competition last year at the same venue was marred by the death of one of the participants, pre-need executive Juan Miguel Vazquez, 52. He suffered a stroke during the swimming stretch of the race, according to Wilfred Uytengsu Jr., president and CEO of Sunrise Events which helped organize the triathlon, reports GMANews.tv. A heart attack was the secondary cause of death according to medico legal findings.
