After celebrity hotel heiress Paris Hilton, 29, was charged with illegal possession of drugs after she was caught with 0.8 grams of cocaine the past weekend in Las Vegas, she claims the cocaine and the purse that contained the drugs were not hers but belonged to an unidentified friend. Agence France-Presse (AFP) via Yahoo News reports that she said she only owned the cash worth $1,300, credit cards, rolling papers and asthma medication also found by the police.

Hilton and her boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub honcho Cy Waits who was driving a Cadillac Escalade at the time, were asked to pull over, when the police smelled a "'vapor trail' of marijuana smoke," according to AP. Police did not say if marijuana was found inside the SUV. Waits failed the field sobriety tests.

Saying she was "extremely embarrassed due to the people taking pictures of her," Hilton then requested to go to the bathroom inside the Wynn Las Vegas resort, reports AP. At a security holding room inside the hotel, she asked for her purse to get her lip balm. "As she began to open it, I saw a small bindle of what I believed to be cocaine in a clear plastic baggy begin to fall from the purse and into my hand," Las Vegas Lt. Dennis Flynn said in a report made public. Hilton supposedly said she thought it was chewing gum.

After she was charged with cocaine possession, she spent less than three hours handcuffed and then she was released without bail, according to AP. Her arraignment is on October 7. If found guilty, she could be put on probation. Violating the probation is punishable by imprisonment of up to four years.

In July, Hilton was also embroiled in drugs drama when she was caught with .04 ounces of cannabis in her handbag on the French island of Corsica, reports AFP. The marijuana charge against her was dropped after her female companion pleaded guilty to possessing the marijuana, according to AP.
