Gloria Diaz banned in Cebu, declared persona non grata for supposedly belittling Cebuanos' English-speaking ability

Saksi video: Cebu local government executives want Gloria Diaz declared "persona non grata"

Gloria Diaz has been banned in Cebu for supposedly belittling the English-speaking ability of Cebuanos, reported Manila Bulletin on September 1. Through a resolution issued by the Cebu chapter of the Vice Mayors League of the Philippines, Diaz was declared persona non grata (personally unacceptable) in the province. The league's resolution also includes a demand for a public apology from Diaz.

The Miss Universe 1969 said the controversial statement last week, following the "major major" answer of the Philippines' Venus Raj, who was this year's fourth runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant. Diaz told TV Patrol World, "I think (Venus) thinks in Tagalog and answers in English. I can relate to that because I used to think in English and answer in Tagalog, and it was very difficult for me... When you think about (it), a Cebuana can hardly speak English and, of course, Tagalog. Maybe she should answer in Bisaya."

Cebuanos from all over the world reportedly took offense at Diaz's comment, Cebu City Rep. Rachel Del Mar said in a Sun.Star report. "Diaz, who once brought glory to this proud nation, has awakened a sleeping giant: Cebuanos' strong aversion to anti-Cebuano insulting remarks," Del Mar said in a privilege speech on August 31. "I therefore call on Diaz to issue a sincere public apology to the Cebuano people." Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia also demanded a public apology from Diaz, reports Manila Bulletin.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on August 28, Diaz said she never meant to insult Cebuanos. "People should have the right to say or to answer (questions) in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English. If you're Ilocano, say it in Ilocano. But if you're Ilocano who speaks good English, say it in English. If you're a Cebuano comfortable speaking in Spanish, say it in Spanish," PEP.ph quoted Diaz.

"I was shocked. Everybody was so angry. I thought they were going to stone me to death," Diaz said with a laugh, according to PEP.ph.

How thin-skinned can you be as a so-called "sleeping giant"? It was just an example, for God's sake! How st*p*d! I'm Cebuano and I'm not even insulted! There are more important issues at hand than to focus on the regionalistic attitude that kills us Filipinos. She has right to say what she wants... that is the freedom of freaking speech! That politician is grandstanding, I say. Cebuanos all over the world are insulted? Not his cebuano... and I speak really good english! If you are offended by that fact... then you are STUPID!

Gloria Diaz is one of a kind animal that expresses her true identity, In the first place at her age right now, she's already an old fashion lad that needs to re-ignite her mentality! I think she needs to enroll again an akward school so that she can rehearse very well her american tongue before it goes to public! What she did was unprofessional and i don't think if she got the subject ETHICS & LAWS during her schooldays if she'd legally finish her education. It's unethical and there's no place for an apology.

@ Gwen Garcia: The Cebuanos understand if they knew G.Diaz used Cebuanos as example. It was the way she said it. She should have been extra careful of what or how she said it. If it was about bad communication, then it is still a big problem. Furthermore, G.Diaz should make it right because clearly, she said it wrong. How can she deal the hurt Cebuanos? If she doesn't apologize, then she is guilty. If one steps on a toe by accident, doesn't he apologize?

We don't need this right now. We are just recovering from the blackeye that the events of August 23 has brought to our country. This is not the right time for regionalism.

most Cebuanos i know speak better English than the Tagalogs, or are better at speaking English than speaking Tagalog. Parang first language is Cebuano, then English, then Filipino. So in relation to the interpreter, the Cebuano would most likely answer in English than answer in Tagalog and have the interpreter tell it in English.

may slight kayabangan kasi the way she delivered it. So I understand why some Cebuanos were slighted.

When I read her statement, I got her point. I mean, there's nothing degoratory about it, unless she has used "Cebuanas" in plural form. It's up to her to make an apology since I don't think she was trying to criticize their language abilities, but declaring her persona non grata is just too much. It's saddening that we're increasingly way oversensitive.

i came from cebu but i donīt find gloriaīs comment offensive, it is only an example. the promblem is in some political leaders who wants to gain the sympathy of some proud cebuanos, instead of solving bigger issues they pick this for popularity.hayyyy! i pity my sugbuanons, they voted some of idiot and proud leaders.

Touche! I have bisaya friends who admittedly say they are more comfortable in their own dialect and fumble with their English pronunciation.
They also admit they are more comfortable in English than Tagalog since that is their 2nd language next to their own dialect.

she made a sweeping statement and cebuanos have the right to feel insulted. she should say sorry. simple. or maybe she didn't use the right words to express herself and it sounded like she was making a sweeping statement against cebuanos. so there, maybe she lacks in english skills too and she couldn't admit it.

Tama po ba ang pagkakaintindi ko sa statement:

"when you think about (it), a Cebuana can hardly speak English and, of course, Tagalog. Maybe she should answer in Bisaya."

Parang sample lang... so pwede rin sabihin:
"when you think about (it), a Batanguena can hardly speak English and, of course, Bisaya. Maybe she should answer in Tagalog."

Meron po bang offensive diyan? What's wrong with being Bisaya?

Did I miss the point or mali lang pagkakaintindi ko?
