Rep. Manny Pacquiao on leave to train for boxing match, to receive House salary despite absence

Published: Sep 2, 2010 - 7:15pm

Saranggani Rep. Manny Pacquiao flew to the US last August 30, 2010 to start training for his November 13 boxing match against Antonio Margarito, reports Inquirer.net. GMANews.TV reports that the Pinoy world boxing champ will go on a week-long, three-city press tour, and will leave again next month to prepare for the bout against the Mexican boxer.

Pacquiao will be marked absent from the House sessions, but he will still receive his salary and allowance, according to GMANews.TV. House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte said on September 2, " I don't think anybody will ever blame Manny for being absent at that time. He is serving the country and the House even if he is there (in the United States)." To support Pacquiao, Belmonte will watch the fight on November 13 at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas, according to GMANews.TV.

Inquirer.net reports that Pacquiao had been religiously attending the Congress sessions since the 15th Congress opened on July 26 up until he left. A neophyte lawmaker, Pacquiao is one of the vice chairpersons of the committee on youth and sports.

"I don't think anybody will ever blame Manny for being absent at that time. He is serving the country and the House even if he is there (in the United States)." - There's a reason why some of the nations hate us and it's because of these kinds of comments that make our lawmakers sound st*p*d and selfish. Manny now has the thickest skin among all Filipinos, why? Because of all the politicians that surround him. Especially that old thick-rubbered skin Singson. Lits git reydi to rambol my a**.

Walanghiya! Buti pa pulitiko may sweldo kahit absent! Sabi ni PNoy "Kayo ang boss ko!" Eh tayo pala ang boss nitong mga pulitiko na 'to wag nating payagan ang ganito!

he should have filed a leave of absence, para di sya magsweldo. if he won't return his salary, sana matalo sya.

Dapat talaga gawing attendance-based na rin ang sweldo ng mg politicians. It's almost the same case as Ledesma's attendance issue sa congress, kaibahan lang dito is that we know Manny's reason for his absenses pero regardless, they're still being paid using the people's money. Mahiya naman sana sa mga regular employees na pinipilit pumasok sa opisina everyday tapos walang kawala sa kaltas na tax!

    agree with the above comments.

there would be two ways to look at this --

for one, his absence doesnt mean he wont be able to serve his constituents and make bills. he could do that upon his return. On the other hand, he is being paid to do just that, and serve the country in that specific manner.....and not thru some other way. Personally i am against politicians who serve two time-consuming masters - politics with either sports or showbusiness. At any given time, either sooner or later, one would have to suffer. Its not enough that you prioritize one and spend your leisure time on the other.

hindi naman ata tama ito even if Manny is representing and bringing honor to the country. surely, his salary in the lower house is chump change compared to what he has already earned in his boxing career. kung ang isang empleyado ay hindi sumasahod kapag wala siyang vacation leave, hindi ba dapat ganoon din, lalo na sa government? I hope Manny will do the right thing by refusing and returning the salary and allowances while he is training for his coming fight and good luck to him.
