Six-year-old contestant Jan-Jan cries while dancing on Willing Willie

(SPOT.ph) Going viral with over 290,000 hits on Youtube is a video of a six-year-old boy named Jan-Jan seen crying while gyrating on Willie Revillame's TV-5 variety show Willing Willie. Uploaded March 12, the footage shows the crowd—including Jan-Jan's aunt—laughing and clapping while the child repeatedly danced to the tune of Dr. Dre's "The Next Episode."

Revillame recognized that Jan-Jan was crying but the host still laughed several times. ("That's how hard life is. Young as he is, Jan-Jan will dance like a macho dancer for his beloved family. You've impressed me, Jan-Jan.")

Revillame then asked the boy to repeat his act and the former joined in. Afterwards, he gave Jan-Jan a P10,000 cash prize. He also compared Jan-Jan's dancing to that in the movie Burlesk Queen, where the star also cries while gyrating onstage.

Reacting to the video, writer Benjamin Pimentel said in an Inquirer.net article, "Who wouldn’t feel your blood boiling in your veins while watching that? I don’t know why, but the clip of Jan-Jan just struck a nerve. Maybe because we know that when we let children be humiliated in front of millions of people, when we let them be subjected to that kind of torture, we somehow degrade our soul as a nation."

Inquirer columnist Cathy S. Babao Guballa also said in a letter posted online, "For me, the biggest fault that evening falls on Willie Revillame’s shoulders. I have no explanation for what possessed him to egg on the crowd, to say those words to you, to liken you to a burlesk dancer. Willie had the power in that moment to stop, no, to prevent you from even performing your dance number. Had he done so, he may have even redeemed himself in a way."

She added, "That he (Revillame) found enjoyment in watching you, and poking fun at you as you cried and looked so miserable was to my mind inexcusable. You are a child, and you are supposed to be loved and protected. Your right to protection is provided for under the law. I am so sorry that we failed to do this for you."

Some Youtube users have also slammed the video while others called it "cute" and saw nothing wrong with it.

The past weekend, a complaint letter was uploaded on Facebook, "(condemning) the act of subjecting poor Filipinos to humiliation in shows... for some quick cash" and urging various organizations to act on the incident which they described as child abuse.

The signatories called for a "temporary moratorium on the guesting of children on Willing Willie and similar shows," for Revillame and the show to issue a public apology to Jan-Jan, and for the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board to review and "impose corresponding penalties on those found guilty" of violations, among others.

Uploaded on the Facebook page "Para kay Jan-jan (Shame on you Willie Revillame!)," the letter has supposedly been signed by film industry personalities Armida Siguion-Reyna, Carlitos Siguion-Reyna and Bibeth Orteza, among others. "(The letter) will be sent to the concerned agencies."

The letter was addressed to TV-5, and the Commission on Human Rights, Senate committee on Youth, Women and Family Relations, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, Integrated Bar of The Philippines, Philippine Association of National Advertisers, Ad Standards Council, Ateneo Human Rights Center, and Council for the Welfare of Children.

This afternoon, DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman posted on her Facebook account a statement "(condemning) the emotional abuse and humiliation bestowed on" Jan-Jan. She added that the Willing Willie incident is "clearly a violation of Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, and a blatant manifestation of child abuse."

The DSWD has asked Manny Pangilinan, the head of ABC which runs TV-5, not to allow children to appear on shows like Willing Willie and rebuked the "insensitive actions and remarks" of Revillame. Soliman said they will also look for Jan-Jan to see if he and his family need counseling and stress debriefing.

The following are the implression TV shows like WILLING WILLIE might be giving to the world:rnrn1. There are many Filipinos who are depending on CHANCE instead of hardwork.rnrn2. There are many Filipinos who are willing to give-up their diginities in exchange for a small amount of moneyrnrn3. It is alright for rich people (like Willie) to make fun of FilipinosrnrnThese impressions are unfair because fans of WILLIE do not represent the Filipinos in general. Maybe it is already time for us to show to the world that we, Filipinos, are not as bad as what WILLIE's show is displaying. The question is, what do we do correct these impressions?rnrnBest regards,

Philippines is a great country bec. of the qualities of the people, but through the bad influence of some TV programs like Willing Willie, I think you're beginning to ruin the pride of this country! Don't take advantage of other people's poverty, help them sincerely. If you want to improve the way of life of your fellowmen, help them , but don't humuliate and degrade their status.rnHwag namang gawing commercial ang kahirapan nang kapwa, tulungang umunlad sila, sa disenteng paraan...

i just wonder sa screening of the contestant suppose the staff of that show should have screen and check if apropriate ba the talent that they would do on stage...it should not happen at the first place the staff should have advice the child to do other dance...seing it really i can say that it appears "malaswa" and even the host say that it is a macho dancer dance even i can say that but still they just keep on doing it again and again....it's really dissappointing and poor jan jan, what kind of parents that he had and what kind of people watching that show, even educated guest and politician was just laughing and find it interesting seeing the poor boy crying and doing that macho dancing again and again......he is just a kid!

Trabahong tamad at mangmang iyon. Sandaling yaman, panandaliang kaligayahan kumbaga.

It breaks my heart to see the little boy innocently show his talent. He was exploited by the parents and Willing Willie and so with the audience. He was labeled macho dancer by Willie which the little did not understand its meaning. That boy is intelligent because at his tender age he knows his action was not pleasing to look at. But he was lured by the money Willing Willie offered him. rnHis tita is also st*p*d. She didn't sense his nephew was being exploited. How st*p*d!

Across the pond, there is currently a raging controversy regarding Abercrombie Kid PUSH UP PADDED bikini tops for 7 year old girls. In this land of the Bishops, there is reason to be upset with this 6 year old kid gyrating like a macho dancer in your typical gay club. In both cases, the psychological damage is enormous. Clearly, parents are the last defense in very distrubing territories.

For MVP: Willie maybe your best asset right now but with the incident on Willing Willie where the subject kid is clearly a victim of child abuse, it is best to pull the plug now on Willie. No amount of twisted explanation as your network executives have issued can reverse the pathetic fate the kid suffered on live national television. Everybody knows what you did when you were accused of plagiarism in Ateneo, that is admirable because you did not hesitate to resign from Ateneo Board. We are waiting for your move on the child abuse incident in Willing Willie, courtesy of your prized talent, Willie Revillame. There is already a move to ask advertisers and sponsors to pull out from the show if not from your network. No advertisers would want to be associated with a network espousing child abuse. Let GO of Willie and his minions including Cristy Fermin (who has the gall to defend willie) and restore respect to your network. Don't be blinded by the ratings, you still have other great talents around. It is now your move, MVP. Profit or What is right? Your choice.

when schools nowadays spend more time for school sponsored talent show rehearsal and sacrifice what should have been utilize for school work... then you know our educational system is in big trouble. instead of learning math and science, it is more of singing and dancing which makes me wonder what kind of future this country will have. rnrnpinagmamalaki natin ang mga professionals natin na mga doctor, nurses, architects, engineers, IT, caregivers, etc... bakit hindi iyon ang gawing mabuting halimbawa ng mga magulang na tularan ng anak nila at hindi yung pag aartista tulad ng pinagmamalaki noong ama ni Jan-Jan. palibhasa pinapairal ang KATAMARAN at ang pagkita ng salapi sa madaling pamamaraan. kawawang Pilipinas, na pagiiwanan na sa Asia.

Dear Mr. Manny Pangilinan, putting pressure on children to do acts such as mimicking adult sexy dances, in exchange for a certain amount of money, and at the expense of being laughed at and ridiculed by hundreds of people, clearly traumatizes the child. This is a clear form of child abuse and will not be tolerated by any civilized society.

The kid was having this emotional moment and all Willie did was laugh. Ginatungan pa niya yung mga tao para pagkatuwaan yung feelings nung bata.rnrnThat Willie's latest victim is a kid merely complicates things, but even if it were done to a grown-up, mali pa rin. OK, host si Willie and it's his job to entertain. OK, nakikipag-unahan din naman sa ratings ang TV-5. But what was done to Jan-Jan was pure and naked mockery. It speaks volumes that a crowd of common and ordinary Filipinos who were there, witnessing all that, did nothing. But laugh.

@lalaland, we can't let it go. Because speaking up is better than being a quiet bystander. Something was wrong and we need to process it in our minds by talking about it and hopefully doing more than talking about it.rnrn"The bystander effect or Genovese syndrome is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases where individuals do not offer any means of help in an emergency situation to the victim when other people are present. The probability of help has in the past been thought to be inversely related to the number of bystanders; in other words, the greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help." Hay, so sad. Napaisip tuloy ako if we're being self righteous because we don't know poverty. Anyways I'll have fun eating lunch every day watching Happy Yipee Yehey and Mula Sa Puso at ang TV Patrol, Mutya, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Imortal, Green Rose. Go ABS-CBN, Boo TV-5!

This show of his was meant to showcase his ego and take pride of what he thinks he can still do to the people. And to think that these people actually worship him. rnrnHonestly, I think he's already a sunken ship and there's nothing he can do about it. He's just so annoying.
  • b Mar 28 2011 @ 05:36pm Report Abuse
Why is Willie the only target of your comments when this wouldn't have happened if the child's parents prevented this from happening in the first place?
  • spaz Mar 28 2011 @ 05:33pm Report Abuse
i'm wondering if no one would make a move about an episode of Willing Willie wherein they had some Aetas as guests. He was very racist during that specific episode. He was making fun of his guests' color and accent. I HOPE THAT INCIDENT WOULD ALSO GAIN THE SAME ATTENTION AS THIS ONE'S HAVING RIGHT NOW>
  • boo_willie Mar 28 2011 @ 05:21pm Report Abuse
the problem is the masses make willie on top of the world because of his money. ever since wowowee mali na ang gngwa ni willie. alisin mo ang pera nyan walang manunuod sa boring at walang kwenta nyang shows.

@advocacy for children\'s rights,rnYou do not blame the Bishops and the advocates! you're barking on the wrong tree fag, what a st*p*d judgment do you have. Blame the dysfunctional family and then the irresponsible media.

"...he would not have exploited him that way...." I mean.
  • reader Mar 28 2011 @ 03:52pm Report Abuse
If he cared about the child he would not exploited him that way. Oh, I forgot, he's not the kind of person who would do that. He makes his living "making people happy." At THEIR expense. Kung yung apo niya kaya pinaganyan?

proud kapatid, nakakalungkot naman yung klase ng entertainment na alam mo. this isn't not about religion or anything, we get that its a variety show pero to make the kid do it over and over again, something must be wrong... its either with your soul or your mind to see this as acceptable.

  • haters keep on hating Mar 28 2011 @ 02:54pm Report Abuse
NEVER MIND I SAW THE evil in him. he is so mean to the child. he made him belly dance !!
  • @proud kapatid Mar 28 2011 @ 02:45pm Report Abuse
  • proud kapatid Mar 28 2011 @ 02:31pm Report Abuse
ipagpatuloy mo lang Willie ang pagpapasaya at pagtulong mo sa masang Pilipino! walang masama sa ginawa mo!rnrninggit lang mga ibang tao dyan kaya ka sinisiraan.rnrnPeople are so stuck up! Loosen up people! It's a F$#%$ variety show for God's sake, not some religious s@#t.rnrnproud WWillie viewer!rnrn

omg! poor kid...nakakainis yung crowd imbes na maawa sa bata tinawaanan pa nila, what if that kid is crying because of embarrassment, didn't the people realize it. nakakalungkot what type of entertainment amuses people right now.
  • thelma Mar 28 2011 @ 02:23pm Report Abuse
The sad part of it Willie will geta away with this...and the irony of it Willie is loved by the masses...rnIt just shows how morally poor the country is and how hard life is. rnI watched the video in disgust and ashamed for what we have become...rnrnAnd to Willie - you know how powerful you are use this to influence and teach the people. rn

Despicable. The international press will certainly pick it up. Where are the Bishops? Where are the politicians? Where are the advocates? Where? Where? Where?
