Sayang you are spot on...aside from the environmental destruction, in recent years there's been vicious legal disputes over property that have involved guns, arson and drug plants. We've had unsolved murders and an island that was once the epitmome of laid back charm is about to put in a casino and extend the airport. Which will mean a further explosion of tacky 'entertainment' along with rampant prostitution..Paradise lost I'm afraid..clearly Travel + Leisure haven't visited the place in lets say errr...a decade or more!
