(SPOT.ph) The Philippines may have the priciest electricity in Asia, but it also boasts the cheapest broadband access, reports Newsbytes.ph. A study conducted by Australian-based data monitor firm Ovum revealed that out of 19 emerging countries, the Philippines had the most affordable broadband options. The only downside is majority of the population have no access to such technology.
According to the report, though broadband in the Philippines costs as low as $1.28 (P55) per 100 megabytes, consumers in emerging markets are still paying more for fixed and wireless broadband than their more mature market counterparts; the relatively low price is also expensive for majority of the consumers in the country. “This lack of affordability is a major inhibitor to unlocking the growth potential in these markets," the study said.
However, Ovum also expects the prices to drop slightly as network operators and service providers compete to attract more subscribers.

@ inspirernrni dunno what youre smoking. we have some of the slowest internet in asia. have you been anywhere else? its true you get what you pay for.
-
Cheapest and slowest. Pag umulan yari na connection.
-
You get what you pay for. I'd rather be charged first-world prices for first-world broadband.
-
We have a large population, but are we the right market and is it the right product? It doesn't matter if broadband is dirt cheap, it's not part of the primary needs. Not worth my praise.
-
cheap nga ang bagal naman.
-
Iyan ba ang advantage ng merong 101 million Filipinos? lahat mi cell phone kahit walang makain? Please enlighten us....
-
@inspire,rnrnI can believe that. We have the advantage of large population. Any businessman in his right thinking will choose to invest or locate their business in a country with a big population. Most if not all technology companies will always see the Philippines as a good market.rnrn

@ super lag, I actually read an article just a few months ago saying that the Philippines offers one of the fastest broadband speeds in the world. In fact, the graph showed we are in the Top 10 higher than some European countries? Has anyone heard of that? Is it true?
-
So true. Analyzing the broadband market is part of my job as an economist. PH has cheap broadband offers but the penetration rate (it is a real term) is one of the lowest due to infrastructure and geographical issues. Gotta love competition. In WE, mobile broadband can go up to 100mbps in theory. If PLDT and/or Globe could invest on a true LTE facility then the problem of geography can be answered :P
-
Offers the slowest "broadband" speed as well.
-
Thank you Smart-PLDT, Globe, Suncellular and others if any. The more the merrier... the more the cheaper... cheapest yes.. but fastest.. i doubt. ;-)
