Google+ not a threat, says Facebook exec

Published: Aug 18, 2011 - 11:57am

(SPOT.ph) Though experts predict that Google+ has the potential catch up with Facebook, an official from the latter believes that Google's new social networking site poses no threat to their dominant status, reports GMA News. At the Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines Summit yesterday, August 17, Facebook sales director for Asia Pacific Dave Yang said, "Google is an awesome company, and we respect them. But in Facebook, we do only one thing, and that is social, period," adding that this focused format keeps Facebook ahead of competitors.

In a Business Insider article dated July 6, Mark Zuckerberg expressed confidence about their position at the top during the launch of Facebook's video chat feature.  "I'm not going to say a lot about Google+, we've all only spent a little time on the service," said the Facebook founder who was one of the first people to open a Google+ account. Without mentioning Google, the Facebook team during the launch also said: "Companies doing one thing will always do better than companies doing a million things."

However, PCWorld.com believes that Google+'s consolidation of various Google services, like the search engine, YouTube, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Reader, and Google Chat, makes it a step ahead from Facebook. Enumerating nine reasons for Google+'s appeal, PCWorld.com said the new site provides for better data security, better friend management, and better photo-tagging features, among other things.

According to GMA News, since opening at the end of June, Google+ has garnered over 20 million users463,367 of which follow Zuckerberg's account. Meanwhile, Facebook, which has over 750 million users worldwide (25 million of which are in the Philippines), is aiming to reach the one-billion mark.

Off tract ka na naman. The subject here is: Does Google have the potential to CATCH UP with Facebook ? They are talking about competition and market share not co-ownership. In media, whether it is TV news, radio, print or cyber, affiliates and sister companies compete for market share. Sobra dunong mo bradahhhh !

Nagmarunong ka na naman. rnrn GMA, which is trying to get a piece of PEP.PH success, is in a negotiation for a possible merger with PEP.PH. rnrnHelleur! GMA co-owns Pep from the start. LOLrn

PEP.PH or Philippine Entertainment Portal like Facebook, is one of the top sites in the world and unchallenged in the Philippines on celebrity gossip news. GMA, which is trying to get a piece of PEP.PH success, is in a negotiation for a possible merger with PEP.PH. rnrnSPOT.PH which is showing market strength in the Luzon area only needs a lot of growing up if it expects to challenge PEP.PH. However, I think SPOT.PH has a better format and newsworthiness than PEP.PH.

I miss the old days when you actually go out to make friends, play basketball, eat isaw and drink sago't gulaman after. Then play tagu-taguan at night, go to a fiesta and ride a bike home. Ah 90s.
