Proposal to rename EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue slammed by netizens

Published: Nov 24, 2011 - 11:05am

GMA News Online reports that Bohol Rep. Rene Lopez Relampagos filed House Bill (HB) 5422, which proposes to rename Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to Cory Aquino Avenue.

In his explanatory note, Relampagos wrote: "It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon Aquino, woman of courage and valor, that EDSA—an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy, be named after her. One cannot think of the 1986 EDSA Revolution without thinking of Corazon Aquino."

However, GMA News Online observed: "Despite this, a large number of Pinoy Twittizens—including celebrities such as Tim Yap, Georgina Wilson, and Paolo Paraiso—refuse to have anything to do with the bill and expressed their disagreement openly online.  The topic became a Top Trend on Twitter late Wednesday afternoon (November 23), and continued to lead the list as of 6:30pm."

The report said that the proposal is "currently pending in the House of Representatives before the House Committee on Public Works and Highways."

It wasn't just Cory who challenged the Marcos dictatorship. Dream on and let that overrated drama live on.

EDSA 1 was a historical event. EDS Ave. is a street name. I believe these readers are totally confusing the street name with the event that ended the Marcos dictatorship. The comment from this guy Jonas is absolutely st*p*d, " that EDSA is bigger than CORY." How st*p*d to misunderstand EDSA 1 from EDS Ave. rnrnEpifanio de los Santos was a Filipino historian noted for his literary work. He served as a one term governor of Nueva Ecija. He was an academician than a public servant. I believe that renaming the street makes a lot of sense because of the historical impact that led to the EDSA 1 revolution where Cory Aquino challenged to end the Marcos dictatorship.

ngek nadelete kasi yung filter...rnrnanyway, I don't think it's a good idea. EDSA is much bigger than Cory, let's not put that in the same context as Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard. Renaming EDSA after the late former President...naalala ko nanaman yung ending ng The Tiger's Treasure.

EDSA is much bigger than Cory, let's not put that in the same context as let's say Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard. To be honest, this reminded me of that ending sa Yamashita: The Tiger's Treasure about EDSA being renamed as Carmelo Rosales Avenue.

If the EDSA 1 revolution did not happen in EDSA I bet these commenters would not have even heard of this street. EDSA was not even a major thoroughfare 40 years ago until traffic started to divert in that direction.

At the height of people power circa 1986, cory was in cebu with some nuns and not in EDSA. Tapos dumiretso siya sa club filipino sa san juan ng ma-game over na si apo macoy. Again, not in edsa. She was there though in 2001 when she and her civil society cronies decided they'd had enough of bigote and his antics, and conveniently stabbed him in the back, thus installing to power the once upon a time good little girl, la gloria

what a useless bill. Fitting tribute to corazon aquino? how about the history that made EDSA as it is named after...? rnCory Aquino was not the frontliner in the revolution,it was the Filipino people. For all we know those politicians in that edsa revolution took advantage of the emotional, freedom loving filipino then. That includes Cory. we are free even before cory came. Refresh your memory...during the chaos at Edsa (Filipinos from different walks of life were present) at the height of the pandemonium, did you seen cory aquino amidst them? did you happen to see cory in front of tanks? cory talking to soldiers? giving flowers and food to the soldiers? it was us, Filipinos who were present from day 1 till the end of Edsa Revolution. and what did we get? rnCongressman, think hard... propose something useful to us Filipinos. you were not elected to do nothing.

First off, ninoy was any other trapo. He wanted to replace marcos so bad as prez he could almost taste it. Ambition drove ninoy, not patriotism. That came later during his incarceration, solitary confinement at fort magsaysay when he finally saw the light. Before the epiphany that was macoy's dungeon, our wonderboy ninoy was in cahoots with the clan of his wife as overlords of the peasants that made their families oh so gloriously rich in that vast plantation, so rich, as in php200B rich in today's money market yet they kept their plantation workers lives so miserable to the point of paying some workers one peso for one whole year of labor after the overlords deducted everything else. God in all his glory would not even justify that, i kid you not. As for that lady in yellow that we love to call as our icon of democracy, she didn't do squat when the mendiola massacre of farmers happened january, 1987 or the subsequent killings of sacadas in her family's hacienda in 2004, '05, '06. The hacienda's goons also killed off priests during that period, for crying out loud. Compared to the atrocious behaviors of the plantation overlords, Epifanio delos Santos comes out smelling like a rose, indeed. So why rename the avenue?

  • lucifer 6 months ago Report Abuse
@ @luciferrnrnThis is the core of the question and I believe that you would understand it. From a historical, political and life changing perspective, the proposal makes a lot of sense because Cory stood up to question the authority of Ferdinand Marcos when no one at that time would even dare speak up against Marcos.rnCory took issue on the murders and sufferings of the Filipino people in the community of nations to condemn Marcos. I'm sure you did not take part in this struggle nor any of your friends. Cory Aquino put herself in the frontlines so you can have freedom today. rnrn rnrn rn

The proposal to rename EDSA to Cory Aquino makes a lot of sense in terms of historical perspective and life changing accomplisments. rnrnCory put her life on the line at a time when no man would stand up to challenge Marcos. She fought and won to restore the freedom that was taken away from us. Cory was instrumental in restoring the credibility of this country at a time when no country and banking systems in the world would loan money to the Philippines because of the corrupt Marcos regime. rnrnEpifanio de los Santos was a man born in Nueva Ecija who served as governor in that province for one term. He was a historian known for his literary work. He was more an academician than a public servant.
