PH overtakes India as world's call center hub

Published: Nov 28, 2011 - 12:40pm

In a feature article, The New York Times writer Vikas Bajaj reports: "More Filipinos—about 400,000—than Indians now spend their nights talking to mostly American consumers, industry officials said, as companies like AT&T, JPMorgan Chase, and Expedia have hired call centers here, or built their own. The jobs have come from the United States, Europe and, to some extent, India as outsourcers followed their clients to India as outsourcers followed their clients to the Philippines. "

Bajaj cited Jojo Uligan, executive director of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines, who says that "the Philippines overtook India this year."

Bajaj went on to explain: "Filipino call center agents typically earn more than their Indian counterparts ($300 a month, rather than $250, at the entry level), but executives say they are worth the extra cost because American customers find them easier to understand than they do Indian agents, who speak British-style English."

Bajaj added:  "Analysts said call centers in the Philippines appeared to have helped American businesses respond to complaints from consumers who said they could not understand Indian agents."

However, this does not mean that Filipino call center agents should be complacent. Bajaj highlighted the fact that some compnaies like Delta Airlines have said "they moved call centers back to the United States to appease angry customers who wanted better English."

Bajaj noted: "Entry-level American call center agents earn about $20,000 a year, about five times as much as similar agents in the Philippines and six times as much as Indian agents."

English proficiency has deteriorated so badly in these parts mainly due to subpar instruction in school. Even college instructors find it difficult expressing their views in english, thus resorting to that pidgin hybrid of a monstrosity, taglish instruction. The solution is obvious enough and readily available, read. But too many young folk don't bother to read anymore, it seems. It's not a reading culture as well, unlike, say, the japanese. am dissing my fellow pinoys again and will probably draw some retorts because of this, but it's a sad fact and it's either we shape up or ship out. As that movie would have it, reality does bite

I read the original NY Times article and saw the comments from foreigners. Most of them say the same thing as this expat said and it's all true:

"I live in the Philippines. I deal with call center agents everyday and I tell you its just cheap labor why the Philippines have surpassed India. Most Filipinos are dim-witted when it comes to customer support. A multinational company like McDonald’s for example; they have these call center agents who insist on speaking in Taglish even when you talk to them in straight English. They know basic English and they just jump to Taglog when taking your order. If you talk to them acutely they snicker and say “nosebleed”. Every Filipino demeans the English language by saying that their noses bleed when you talk to them even in the simplest English. It’s like saying they would rather remain ignorant than to comprehend an English sentence. It can be an insulting experience everyday living in Manila when you need customer care and these Filipinos think it’s funny to say “nosebleed” to your simplest, simplest query in English. Ask any Filipino, I dare anyone, if this disrespectful word “nosebleed” exists and they would tell you that they find it an amusing word for their intolerance in using the English language. The world needs smart call center agents, and NOT Filipinos who belittle a universal language!"

i don't know if this is really a good thing. you finish a 4 year course and end up answering calls. and working at night for years and years will also take a toll on one's health. but for short term goals it would work for those who couldn't get employment elsewhere. just like what the song from cambio says "i'll be at the call center until something better comes along my way."

Even though i love indian food, their heavily accented english give them away immediately. No offense, but it's grating to the ears, too
