Customer allegedly finds caterpillar in Chic-Boy dish, posts written complaint on FB; Chic-Boy management mulls libel case

Published: Dec 14, 2011 - 7:54am

An excerpt from Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo's "A Break-Up Letter from an Upset Customer."

GMA News Online reports that Chic-Boy customer Sigrid Andrea P. Bernardo documented finding what seemed to be a dead caterpillar mixed with the Ginisang Kangkong that she ordered at the restaurants Timog Avenue branch. The "caterpillar incident" happened on November 21, 2011.

In the complaint that she posted online, Bernardo took a hum0rous tone. She tagged her open letter as "A Break-Up Letter from an Upset Customer." In it, she detailed her experience. As it turns out, she was reportedly given the run-around by the restaurant staff. Later, she was even made to speak to two policemen. Despite all the supposed fuss, Bernardo said she still didn't get a sufficient explanation for the presence of the caterpillar in her food. Perhaps, out of sheer frustration, Bernardo felt she had no other choice but to go public with her complaint. Needless to say, the photos of the large catepillar on a plate that also had Ginisang Kangkong on it disturbed a lot of people.

As Bernardo's "break-up letter" went viral, this message was posted on Chic-Boy's Facebook page:

GMA News Online also noted that Chic-Boy management has claimed that Bernardo's complaint is a "demolition job" being backed by a "desperate competitor." On their Facebook account, Chic-Boy management also posted this message: "If you are familiar with Chic-Boys ginisang kangkong sa bawang, our kangkong is cut into bits. HOW COME IN THE PHOTO THEY POSTED, THE CATERPILLAR IS WHOLE?"  (The sentence emphasis is theirs.)

In light of the catepillar brouhaha, Chic-Boy fans express their support for the restaurant. However, a good number of people have also been put off by it as well.

Whether or not Sigrid's claims were true, the classy and gracious thing that Chic-Boy should have done was to simply apologize to help defuse the situation. This is now not just a matter of who is telling the truth, but the fact that Chic-Boy is demonstrating poor management. That if any other customer complains about Chic-Boy's products or services, they can expect to be met with the same rudeness, aggression, and threatening accusations that were extended to Sigrid.

May surprise sahog pala ang kangkong! Kasi naman, you should get what you pay for. Hindi lahat ng libre ay nakakatuwa. Wala sanang problema kung ang pangalan ng store ay Inschicboy...insect, chicken, baboy.

Caterpillars are actually edible along with a bunch of other creepy-crawlies. Very good source of protein, that is if you're not squeamish, of course. The complaint could be a set-up, for all i know.
