Defense team spokesperson Atty. Karen Jimeno admits she signed a petition vs. Chief Justice Renato Corona's appointment

Published: Feb 10, 2012 - 8:41am

Philstar.com reports that Atty. Karen Jimeno, one of the spokespersons of Chief Justice Renator Corona, admitted on Wednesday, that, back in 2010, she signed a manifesto opposing the appointment of the chief magistrate by former president and current Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Philstar.com quoted Jimeno, who said, "It's true and I'm not denying it. In fact, I'm proud of it. It only shows my objectivity. I'm here to protect the integrity of the judiciary and not of any personality."

However, Jimeno said she "decided to become one of the spokespersons of the Corona defense team because she believes that the allegations against Corona are not true."

Pure BS iyan!

atty. jimeno should not have sided with a person whose appointment as highest arbiter of the land, she herself questioned. i thinkk they call it delicadeza.

The defense team is working for free. What I've heard last time the reason they worked for free is because they want to be part of the history.

For me their reason of working for free is somehow to selfish. Would thy work for free to defend those people who doesn't have money.

Begging to differ, troll. Corona's appointment in 2010 may have been midnight but it sure wasn't out of bounds. If Corona was even halfway decent then, he should've begged off his appointment by Mrs Arroyo so that the incoming president, BSA III, would have had a free hand appointing his choice for chief justice. Arroyo did not afford him (Pnoy) that courtesy and look who's sore about it. Corona was Arroyo's foil just in case the s*** hit the fan, and boy, it did.

What happens when the proceedings go into article 1 then? Baka ipatawag pa sya ng prosecution as witness, hingin ang opinion nya kung bakit sa tingin nya nung 2010 eh hindi dapat tinanggap ni Corona ang appointment as CJ.

The problem with this impeachment is that early on, Corona's spin doctors easily made it into an institutional battle, i.e. the supreme court vs. PNoy and the lower house. It sickens me when I hear the oft-repeated dictum that lawyers and judges should defend Corona because they are "agents" of the court and this was an attack on the court's independence. It's sad that the government branches have such a gang mentality. The impeachment turned from a fight against what was wrong (the midnight appointment and GMA's influence over court decisions) into a war between the judiciary vs the executive and part of the legislative.

I still believe that this isn't a way for the executive to force the judiciary to submit to it's whims. It's just that the judiciary has become too powerful that there has been no check and balance, Add that to the fact that the members are too easily influenced by people like GMA and Estelito Mendoza.

If we had a decent, untarnished House of Representatives, the backlash against the impeachment wouldn't be as significant as it is. However, Corona's supporters have rallied behind the "let he who has no sin cast the first stone" reasoning given the mounting evidence of Corona's ill-gotten wealth.

Admittedly, the prosecution is ill-prepared and out-classed. However, the fact of the matter is, Corona took that illegal midnight appointment and his cohorts at the Supreme Court legitimized it. Let's set aside our hatred for boorish congressmen for a while, and start cleaning house.

Two years back, Ms Jimeno was opposed to the appointment of Mr Corona as chief magistrate. Fast forward two years later and Jimeno is protecting the integrity of the judiciary more than that of an individual. Goes to show that the executive resorted to the scatter gun approach in its obsession to convict the chief justice, kasi tinamaan din ang institusyon ng hudikatura. That's why the prosecution in this case is turning out to be the laughing stock because of their ineptness in the ongoing trial. They had the gall railroading the House to sign a half baked article of impeachment all the while crossing their fingers that Corona will just quit like Merceditas Gutierrez, the former Ombudsman, did even before her impeachment case got to the Senate, but Corona called their bluff and decided to still play the cards he's dealt with because they might as well have nothing on him. Congress exercised hubris on this one, it might as well be abolished.

She's brilliant. Imagine being able to contradict herself and then defend the fact that she is contradicting herself. I crown her the next Gloria Arroyo...only she's taller and she's beautiful.

From what I heard, the defense lawyers are actually not paid. They work for free. Sige, ma-baffled ka pa. Yes, we all need money but it's not everything.

So...she's defending a man whom she didn't respect enough to be Chief Justice in the first place? Where are her principles? Let me answer that: They're probably in her bank account. I can understand what she did. We all need money. Ang malas lang n'ya may nag dig-up ng petition na 'yan.
