ABS-CBNNews.com—citing an interview done by Wilson Lee Flores and published in The Philippine Star on Sunday, February 12—reports that former Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson is opening the 47-room The District Hotel, as well as a bar, in Boracay. The report noted: "(Singson) described the beachfront District in Boracay's Station 2 as a 'very high-end boutique hotel' but with 'middle-range' room rates."
Singson went on to explain to Flores: "I bought it as an empty lot. We started development three to four years ago, but it was delayed kasi nagkulang ng pondo and I got into trouble in Hong Kong. We’re now finishing it." In July 2010, Singson was nabbed for carrying cocaine at Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok International Airport. He then spent 18 months in a Hong Kong prison. Due to good behavior, his sentence was reduced to one year. Singson also said the hotel is "90 percent complete."
The report revealed that the former congressman's father, Ilocos Sur Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson, is "very excited" and "supportive" of the hotel project. The report also pointed out that the Singson family owns the Vigan Plaza Hotel in Ilocos Sur.
