Published: Mar 28, 2012 - 6:45am

Inquirer.net, citing information from the Department of Tourism (DOT), reports that "tourist arrivals breached the 400,000 mark in January 2012." The report noted: "Records showed that a total of 411,064 foreign tourists visited the Philippines in January 2012, accounting for a 17.5-percent jump from the 349,713 visitors who came to the country in the same period last year."

Inquirer.net quoted DOT Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr., who said in a statement, "We are happy to set a new all-time high for the industry, as we have now reached and surpassed the 400,000 visitor arrival mark for the first time in any single month."

    @Pilipino @cynical balikbayan at iba pa,

    Hindi ko maiwasan ang mga comments nyo. Yung kay Pilipino at Mark nakapagbalik ng alaala ko. Kagaya ng kwento ni Mark, at ni cynical balikbayan about growing up, may kwento rin ako. Nung teenager ako, iniwan din ako ng father ko para magtrabaho sa Amerika. Nung una, masaya ako kasi marami akong pera at baon. Pero ng tumagal nahirapan ako at na realize ko na mahirap ang walang daddy. wala ako masabihan ng problema, wala ako makasama. Kahit nandyan pa ang lolo at lola, iba talaga ang daddy pag kausap mo, wala kasi akong mommy. Nakiuasap ako ilang beses sa kanya na umuwi na pero ayaw nya sabi nya maganda iyon kasi marami kaming pera. Dahil hindi nya ako pinakinggan, may mga desisyon akong nagawa na hindi maganda. Ang ibig ko lang sabihin, nasayang ang mga taon na nagkamali kami pare pareho. Ang daddy ko, iniwan ako kasi nalulong siya sa maganda at maluwag na buhay doon, yung wala syang inaalala na anak nya at responsibilidad. Nahulog ang loob sa babae na iniwan naman din sya. At hanggang ngayon may galit ako sa kanya lalo na ng aminin nya na marami daw pagkakataong nakakita sya ng mga "signs" na dapat umuwi sya. Hindi nya iyon binigyan ng pansin, kaya ayun hindi ko sya makuhang matanggap ng husto. Kasi kung nandito sya noon baka na-guide nya ako ng tama kung may mga desisyon akong akala ko tama iyon pala mali. Iyan ang karanasan ko at ngayon nagtuturo ako at sinasabi ko sa mga estudyante na magsumikap ng husto. Hindi kagaya ng ibang mga co-teachers ko lalo na ang mga babae, umalis ng bansa. Ako, hindi siguro.

      @Ariel de Guzman,

      There are reasons, I believe why we are here in this site and feed together. That is, to learn from each other, and from each other's experiences. Ariel, sana may spot nun para nakausap mo kami during those times para may napaglibangan ka kahit iniwan ka ng daddy mo. Mark at tambay sa kanto, salamat sa mga na-share nyong experiences. Glad, you have to focus, do not lose it. I believe there are still people who believes in you here in the Philippines. and remember, if there is one person, only one person who believes and who has confidence in you, you will not fail here. You do not have to go somewhere else to work.

      You have a point extreme optimism is blinding. suggestions without proper research and reading are also doomed. Just one question, so you do not condemn people who are just positive? trying to change one thing at a time?
  • cynical balikbayan Apr 06 2012 @ 10:32am Reply Report Abuse

    @tambay: what i am against are people who are extremely positive and naive that they have become and people who come up with all these naive suggestions without doing their research.

    Ok, ok, got your point people. There are some of you who doe not believe that progress in the Philippines at least for individual household is possible. There are some of you who believes that working as OFW is needed to feed one's family and still some of you believes that "simpleng buhay" is enough.
    Magkakaiba ng opinyon kasi magkakaiba ng experiences.
    @Glad,
    you believe that OFW is needed, maybe because you are working outside of the country to earn a living,but don't you have a job here in the Philippines? or you just choose to earn dollar instead of peso here in the Philippines because you just want a life which is different from your life here? Away from responsibilities from your friends, sons, daughters, wife, or gf. Or maybe you are fed up with your failures here because you are too eager to earn so much for your luxury? Maybe your wife or gf is not too understanding that she asks too much? Or maybe gusto mo lang talaga ang "liberated" na buhay dyan, ayaw mo mag isip at mag care sa mga maiiwan mo na balewala sila sa iyo. You do not care about your son or daughter being harassed and treated violently because you are nowhere near them. Whatever your answer is, think about it, it is for your own good and it might change your mind for being that positive about OFW giving money to the country through remittance. You might think of the lost you are making. This will forever be your lost.

    @cynical,
    there is nothing wrong with being positive. It is the start of acting towards correcting what is negative about the situation.

    @Pilipino,
    simpleng buhay differs from people's perspective. Ang simple sa iyo may pagkain 3 beses isang araw, ang simple sa iba hanggang 5 beses na masarap na pagkain. Mahirap silang intindihin ito. At sa pagkuha naman ng makakatuwang sa buhay na simple at uunawain ang kasimplehang ito, mahirap humanap para sa ating mga lalaki ng babaeng maiintindihan ang salitang "simple". Dito nga sa spot, ang mga posters na babae, you will notice parang hindi maintindihan ang kasimplehan. Sa mukha pa lang ng mga babae ngayon, tumingin ka, hindi na natural at simple,lahat halos wala ng kilay, hindi na totoo ang ilong, at pati mga katawan. Paano pa nila maintindihan at ma-appreciate ang "simpleng buhay". Pag nakakita ka ng babae na hindi magalit kung wala kang gift sa bday, anniversary or tueing Xmas, swerte ka na. Simula na iyon ng kasimplehan.

      @tambay,

      ang ganda ng comments mo.
      may babae pang simple ngayon, ang mother ko at mother mo siguro. alam mo bang ang father ko was offered a job abroad before pero hindi sya umalis kasi naisip nya maiiwan nya kami. We survived, we were able to go to private schools, now we are professionals all 4 of us, siblings. My mother taught us to be simple at unahin ang kailangan bago mga unnecessary things, tapos tinulungan nya ang father ko to provide for us. Kaya ako, positive ako kahit walang OFW sa aming pamilya.

      I believe may babae pang simple at mabait, tanungin mo si Pilipino, nakakita sya dito sa spot hehehe! Swerte ka talaga para kang nakakita ng rare gem sa gitna ng lupa.

    "matutunan ng mga OFW ang mangalakal (business) sa ating bansa."

    many of them want to run their own businesses. many of them did in fact. but here in the philippines, majority of businesses fold up within the first 3 years. and as Genuine said, it's hard to establish one-- you'd have to deal with the red tape and corruption in getting licenses. And then you'd have to pay exorbitant taxes. do you know that the Phils has one of the highest business taxes in the world? it's more than singapore and as much as the US's taxes. many of my dad's friends who own small stores have to pay exorbitant taxes in spite of the fact that they dont earn much.

    hay, your freakin optimism.

    We run a business and regulations alone won't make it easy. In progressive countries they make you go thru 2-5 steps for you to be approved. This country? For the occupancy permit, city hall will make you go thru mazes! 25 steps and signatures for a single piece of paper! You have to be super patient to go thru all the BS in front of you, or choose the alternative; pay/bribe your way thru the system. Sorry, di pa naman ganyan kakapal ang mukha ko, so you plod along. Now, say, you have to go to the electric company for the requisite improvement of your service entrance. Pag lumaki na kasi building mo, natural, madadagdagan ang load mo what with the added A/C units and whatnot, so they have to replace the existing wires that supply power to your establishment to much bigger wires to avoid overloading your system at di magputukan lahat ng gamit mo. Nagawa na ng contractor yung bagong entrada, pero ang electric company? ayun, taking its sweet time to do its part of the bargain. As you can see, madam, it's not a rose-colored glass globe as you would want it to be. PS: sa awa ng Diyos ginawa naman ng Meralco at city hall ang kanilang parte, pero matagalang tiyagaan pa rin yan.

    i can tell by your naivete Pilipino that you havent met a lot of OFWs. many of them, even with the remittances they are receiving, are living simple lives. kung wala silang kamag anak sa abroad, hindi posible na makakain, makapag aral, at maipagpagamot nila ang sarili nila. kung dito lang magtratrabaho ang pamilya nila, hindi simpleng buhay dadanasin nila-- mamamatay sila sa gutom.

    @Glad to be Pinoy,

    Sa dami ng workers dito sa Pilipinas, hindi na natin kailangan kumuha from outside, just excel in what we do. Sana lahat ng OFW sa ibang bansa makauwi na. marami na ang pamilyang nalulungkot. Matutuo lang tayong mag appreciate ng simpleng buhay mas maayos ang bawat pamilya.

      pahintulutan ninyo ako magbigay ng aking hiling at panukala:

      1. matutunan ng mga OFW ang mangalakal (business) sa ating bansa. kapag marami na ang nangngalakal sa ating bansa, mas marami ang magkakaroon ng hanapbuhay, mas maraming hanapbuhay, mas marami ang makabibili ng mga bagay at serbisyo, ergo economic movement. not too long ago, there were 150k registered corp. businesses (mostly SOHO/SME) in SEC, out of close to 90 million population. if we can increase the 150k to 200k, that will already provide 33% increase in labor. we must also remember, BSP reported formal remittances alone in 2011 registered $21B. kung ang 1/4 nito ay napunta sa negosyo, ang laking tulong nito sa ating bansa.

      2. ipagmalaki natin ang ating bansa bilang "tourist destination". kung ang bawat isa sa mahigit na 10 milyon na OFW ay maghihikayat sa mga dayuhan (at kapwa pilipino) na magtungo sa pinas upang magbakasyon, at 5% success rate per year, we will easily have 500,000 additional tourists. paano kung tumaas sa 10% ang success rate?

      naniniwala ako sa dami ng mga matatalino sa spot, marami pang mga panukala ang maaring maipamahagi. umaasa ako na ipamamahagi ninyo ang inyong dunong dito sa spot.

        Glad,
        matututunan ng OFW ang mangalakal kung marami ng nangangalakal sa ating bansa? ano ang ibig mong sabihin, kailangan mauna ang iba kaysa sa ating mga pilipino na may konti ng capital para magsimula? dependent ba tayo sa kilos ng iba? hindi ba puede na tayo mauna?

        Ang remittances ng OFW ay may kapalit, nasabi ko na ito sa iyo dati, $21B remittance for 2011, ikinatuwa mo na iyon? alam mo ba kung ano ang mga sinapit ng pamilya ng mga nagbigay ng remittance na ito? alam mo rin ba kung saan napunta ang mga remittance na ito. I do not believe you, I thought you know things about loving and supporting you country. It is true what they say, you will know things when a person speaks. Ang maliit ba na negosyo nangangailangan ng malaking capital kahit isa o dalawa lang ang itao mo? Kung ang kapalit ng pagtatayo ng maliit na negosyo na ito ay kabutihan sa lahat at pera na paiikutin sa komersyo ng Pilipinas? Go back to GDP and GNP, hindi ako ekonomista pero ang remittance na sinasabi mo ay matutumbasan ng proper programs dito.

        Ang pagmamalaki ng bansa sa turista,iyan ay maganda pa Ngunit OFW manghihikayat ng turista?kayo nga mismo wala sa bansa? How can you do something which you have not done for the longest time? Kaya pala sobra ang malasakit mo sa mga nagtatrabaho sa ibang bansa, ayaw mo lang maitama ang maling pananaw mo. Basahin mo uli ang isinulat mo. kayong mga wala sa bansa, kayo ang umuwi at magsimula dito sa Pilipinas. Walk the talk sabi nga nila, alam mo ba iyon? I ambeginning to doubt because I am disappointed. You talk nonsense if your basis is nonsense.

        Glad,

        alam ko hindi sa akin ang sagot ngunit singit ko lang, matayog na hanapbuhay saan? sa ibang bansa? Paano mangyayari kung ang mga OFW ay tuluyang nawawalan ng pag asa sa bansa at pati ang kanilang mga naiiwan ay nahahawa sa kanilang pananaw. Ang iba tuluyang iniiwan ang pamilya at naninirahan sa ibang bansa pati mga asawa at anak iniiwan dahil sa mga tukso na nariyan sa ibang bansa. Hindi ka yata nagbabasa ng mga balita at nakikibalita sa iba. O baka naman bulag ka sa katotohanan?

        alam mo, Glad ang ibang nagtatrabahosa ibang bansa kagaya mo, may mga naiwang trabaho dito at opportunidad kaya lang mas pinipili nila ang umalis dahil ang maririnig mo sa kanila ay ito:
        - kung hindi ako aalis, wala namang mangyayari sa atin dito
        - doon, mahal ang kita at sweldo ko, mabibili na natin lahat iyan
        Pansinin mo, mga luho at walang kabuluhang pangarap at nasirang pag asa. Kaya ang mga kababaihan natuto na silang humanap ng foreigner dahil sa nakikita sa mga katulad nyong pananaw.

        Ikaw, sa ipinakikita mo, nangangarap ka lang ng sobrang taas at kahit ano gagawin mo kahit ang mahal mo pa sa buhay ang kapalit. sigurado ako, may naiwan ka at babalikan kang propesyon kung hindi man mga taong naniniwala sa iyo. Your lost, bro.

        Una, huwag nating pagtaksilan ang ating bansa. Kasi kung aalis tayo sino ang maniniwala sa atin, parang "walk the talk" hindi natin masasabi na maganda ang bansa natin sa iba, bakit tayo umalis?
        pangalawa, gawin nating maganda ang pakitungo sa kanila, we are known for this maliban na lang sa mga magnanakaw at mga taong ayaw lumaban ng patas sa kahirapan. This will be like word of mouth advertisement. Pag maganda ang experience nila dito they will tell their friends. Pangatlo, let us use the internet for good. Let us put pictures of beautiful Philippines to help spread the news. Parang yung isang kasama natin dito sa spot. Kilala nyo sya, ang fb nya puro magandang tanawin ng Pilipinas ang karamihang pictures at hindi sa ibang bansa.
        Marami pang paraan basta lang ang importante ang mga Pilipino magbalik ng bansa at huwag magtaksil sa inang bayan.

            Glad, I think I have to tell you this, if only there are ways to stop our OFWs from leaving the country, I will. Why? it breaks my heart to see Filipinos leaving their families. Malungkot na maiwan ang pamilya, buti nga kung pagbalik nila nandyan pa mga mahal nila sa buhay. Ikaw, hindi ka ba nalulungkot. Kaya lang umaalis sila kasi wala silang makitang trabaho dito. Or marami namang trabaho, hindi lang nila ma-appreciate what the country has to offer. Yung iba, maraming puedeng mapasukan kaya lang gusto pa nila talaga yung malaking pera. Sabi nga life is not all about the gold. Sad to say, we have this mentality that corrupts our being simple Filipinos. Nasa isip natin mas maganda ang kita sa ibang bansa, dollars. Tapos ang government ang tawag pa sa kanila modern "bayani". I do not know, we seem to be so engrossed with dollars, money, leaving the country.
            Do not get me wrong, I have nothing against OFWs, in fact, I pity them because they have to suffer being away from their families.

            Glad, I think I already told you much about this idea nung first time na nag palitan tayo ng comments here sa spot. I remember. Sana lang hindi mo ito itinatanong to justify your being away from your family and Philippines, kung nasa ibang bansa ka man. If you are, then, I have to tell you this: with your ideas and intelligence, na nakita naman natin how you join conversation dito sa spot.ph, you have to be here in the Philippines. The Philippines need you here. take this as an advice. At kung nandito ka naman, good for you. You will excel in any field. I think you are good.

                tama ka, wala akong sama ng loob sa mga OFW ngunit tandaan mo rin,hindi ko ito ikinatutuwa dahil ang karamihan sa kanila ay may mga choices at karamihan sa kanila inuna ang marangyang buhay kaysa simple at magsilbi sa bayan. Marami ang nasa Amerika, ginusto na ang buhay doon at pinagpalit ang buhay dito at mahal sa buhay dahil sa kinang ng dolyar at ganda "daw" doon.

                Matanong din kita, bakit mahalaga sa iyo ang pananaw ng tao tungkol sa OFW? Sa pagbasa ko ng iyong sagot, ikaw ay OFW o aspiring one. Glad, hindi kita kilala pero huwag kang magpadala sa dolyar at sa pagiging liberated ng pamumuhay kung saan ka man naroon. Mas maganda ang simple at masayang buhay sa Pilipinas kasama ang mga mahal mo sa buhay. Philippines is for the Filipinos!

          Makakatulong tayo para makahikayat ng turista sa pamamagitan ng:
          1. mahalin natin ang ating bansa. kung mahal natin ito, we can express our interest in our country, we can preserve the natural resources which make up a big percentage of its beauty.
          2. tama si Mark, huwag nating ipakita na iniiwan natin ang ating bayan sapagkat may masama at negative na epekto ito sa mga tao.
          3. pagbutihin natin ang pakikitungo sa lahat ng tao.

    maliit pa yan. we need better toilets and less holdapers to get higher numbers. during a visit to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City, I noticed that there were so many tourists even if those cities didnt have too much to offer. However, you dont have to worry about getting mugged. I can't say the same for Manila.

      I agree...our goal to be number one or among the top is a long journey...what is important, we already made the first CORRECT step. on the sidelines, DOT can expect our support and encouragement. mabuhay!!!

    What's to celebrate? We get the crumbs in tourist arrivals in southeast Asia along with Cambodia. We got squat compared to what Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and even Vietnam get. Reform the way we do business and we get more, like the numbers our neighbors get now.

    just so you know, thailand gets 19 million tourists now. not that its totally a good thing but if you want statistics we are way far behind our neighbors in tourism
