CBCP official to Pinoys: Pray and vote for Jessica Sanchez

Published: May 10, 2012 - 9:07am

ABS-CBNNews.com reports that Father Conegundo Garganta, the executive sectary of the influential Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), is calling on all Filipinos worldwide to support Filipino-Mexican-American contestant Jessica Sanchez, who is currently part of “American Idol” Top 4. In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, May 9, Garganta said it is but right to vote for the 16-year-old singer.

“With such talent, it’s only but proper for us to help and support her especially since she’s a youth. I think she’s only 16 or 17 years old and she’s faced with such a big challenge already,” the report quoted Garganta as saying. “Whether or not Jessica Sanchez wins, I hope this will open the door for other people to show their talent to the world.”

Sanchez is set to conquer the “Idol” stage once again on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila) along with the other remaining contestants.

Is he implying that we vote cheat for Jessica since he's calling all the Filipinos worldwide to vote for her?

"I think she’s only 16 or 17 years old and she’s faced with such a big challenge already."

Oh wow, poor her. Joining AI must be the biggest challenge anyone can have. Give me a break. We're currently in dispute with one of the world's most powerful countries and you're asking us to pray for someone to win a competition that's set IN AMERICA? Why, will her victory secure us Scarborough Shoal? If she wins and gets a cash prize, will she be donating it to the homeless? How about we just pray that China doesn't nuke us?

Just another case of may masabi lang.

I'd rather they ask everyone to pray that the Scarborough issue be resolved.

Same goes for people who are so focused on campaigning for Jessica to win. I'm saddened that there is more social media buzz on this than the territorial dispute that we have in China. It would be better if we focus our energies in letting the world know about it (e.g. writing international institutions and foreign media, etc). Of what use is Pinoy pride if Jessica wins if we lose our own sovereignty to China?

Sorry to compare (I know that I might sound like being a party pooper to fans) but it just surprises me that people are not giving the Scarborough issue more serious thought and attention.

    @mvincent, @Pilipino,@Mark, @tambay sa kanto @ cynical balikbayan,

I have to agree with you all.

I have nothing against CBCP because I am a catholic and thinking one at that but I believe this is kind of not important to us. As what most spotters commented we will not gain from this. She is not a pilipino, the very fact that she is in that contest, then she is at heart, civilly an American. Think about that! It does not matter if she has filipino parents, for all we know they are no longer filipinos, having dual citizenship is a mess and a vague concept to a citizen.

Why not pray for our own brothers and sisters who are, everyday fighting for their lives; pray for the 70% out of the 86% catholics who are based on study remains "unchurched" meaning they are not active as one;pray for our country and its people so that we will be guided to think critically about what we can do to better our own very lives. Sometimes all we have to do is stop and think, think hard, intelligently and not be dragged into doing something just because it is the "in" thing to most people.

Good thinking filipina ako. American Idol will not benefit us!!!! that is a fact! learn to live with it people!

    More importantly, why pray?
  • mvincent May 10 2012 @ 06:41pm Reply Report Abuse

Seriously? How about you pray for something else far more important than a contestant in an international singing competition? Para namang may direct benefit sa atin 'to. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but does she even acknowledge her Filipino roots?

Explain to me, why would I pray and vote for this American idol contestant? Why would i waste my time with this american? why will I watch american idol? why on earth would i pray for this? when in fact many of my kababayans need my prayer badly? Hello!!!!!

I agree with you spotters. There are a lot of important issues to pray for than this Jessica Sanchez thing.

I also agree with you Pilipino. People i think we must start to think critically and not be talked into things like this.

Incredibly funny!!! This father, priest doesn't know what he is asking. She is not one of us. There are more important things to pray for, as what cynical said, for the pilipinos. As what was said, it is American Idol. America will benefit from this thing not Philippines, not us, not the poor people of the Philippines. WAKE UP PEOPLE! What ever happens she will give pride to America, she will bring American flag wherever she goes, she will recite allegiance to America and what happens to her being a little blood related to us pinoys? IT will be asked not that much because she is an american. Tayo lang yata ang masyado nagbibigay importance dito. Ang babaw ng pagiging pinoy nyo! Mag isip nga kayo! KUlang na naman kayo sa pag iisip
