Bishop criticizes priests with "boring" homilies, says people prefer "livelier and more intense speeches" of preachers

The Philippine Daily Inquirer's Jocelyn R. Uy reports that in his speech during the 6th National Charismatic Congress held in Pasay City last Thursday (May 31), Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani said that "instead of going to gatherings by the Church, more people now prefer to attend events organized by charismatic groups mainly because of the 'livelier' and more intense speeches delivered by their preachers." The report quoted Bacani, who observed, "You'll notice that even if the speeches of these preachers are long, the people are awake. But when we (priests) are giving long homilies, the people are asleep."

Bacani went on to commend the preachers of religious groups: "You'll see that (wakefulness) in the people attending El Shaddai, Soldiers of Christ and the gatherings of Bro. Bo Sanchez." The bishop hoped that the priests with "ho-hum" homilies would consider his observations as a "wake-up call."

If you had to buy time, would there be any difference in the way you would spent it? Would you use the minutes, hours, and days of your life more wisely?
Of course, we can't put a price tag on the minutes and hours we possess. They are given us freely carefully and wisely. The giver of time is God Himself, and that places a far greater value on our time than any monetary figure could suggest. We must therefore take advantage of the opportunities time provides to serve the Lord and to do His will.
This doesn't mean that we that we have to be working every single moment. It's necessary to take a break the way,or to enjoy the beauty of a sunset. We use our time wisely when we combine the appropriate "stops" with the proper "steps". According to Solomon, there is a time for all of God's purposes to be accomplished (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
I'm so grateful that the Lord doesn't sell time. He provides it as a gift of His grace. So let's spend our days "redeeming time",using the opportunities to live for God (Colossians 4:5).
Yes,time is precious. Handle with care! Till time for us is past.So let us live as if this day Is going to be our last.

Bristle cone pines are the world's oldest living trees. Several are estimated to be 3,000 to 4,000 years old. In 1957, scientist Edmund Schulman found one he named "Methuselah." This ancient, gnarled pine is nearly 5,000 years old! I t was an old tree when the Egyptians were building the pyramids.
Bristle cones grow atop the mountains of the western United States at elevations of 10,000 to 11,000 feet. They've been able to survive some of the harshest living conditions on earth: arctic temperature, fierce winds, thin air, and little rainfall.
Their brutal environment is actually one of the reasons they've survived for millenia.
    Good timber does not grow in ease;
    the stronger wind, the tougher tree;

It;s been said that in the former Soviet Union the peasant farmers of ten enjoyed telling a humorous story to lighten their dreary lives.
it seems that one day a government official came to a farmer and inquired about the year's potato crop. "Oh, it was wonderful," the farmer replied Slyly."It was so big it reached up to the very foot of God."
The commissar's countenance quickly changed. With a scowl,he said, "But comrade, this is a communist State and we are atheists. You must not forget, there is no God!".
"Ah, that's my point," the farmers replied."No God---no potatoes!"
Yes, whether we believe it or not,God id the source of all things (Psalms 136:25). The apostle Paul told a pagan audience,"In Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). And in Colossian 1:16-18, he focused on the great creating and sustaining work of God in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ.Without Him,we couldn't draw a single breath, and our bodies could not function.

"Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings." Luke 16:9-15
Jesus' advice is to be read in the light of the proceeding parable of the Dishonest Steward (LK 16:1-8). To ensure a comfortable existence for himself in the future the steward wins over his master's debtors by allowing them to change their promisorry notes, decreasing the amounts they owed his master. He does this in the house that after he is dismissed, the grateful debtors will welcome him into their homes. Using this "worldly" example, the evangelist tells the believers to be shrewd in the use of their wealth.Material possessions, though not inherently evil, are one of the main driving forces of a world that is opposed to God.Wealth in its different forms is "dishonest"because it shares in the unrighteousness of this age. But wealth can be used for good, to make friends of people. If wealth is used to help the poor, they who are friends of God will assist in procuring a bright future for the generous benefactor. This will take the form of an eternal home. For sure, dishonest (worldly) wealth will perish;one does not carry it when one appears before God. But if wealth is "used" wisely--shared or given up for the sake of the Kingdom----it "buys" one an eternal dwelling with the Lord.

  • Advance for May
"Is he not the carpenter's son?"--Mt13:54-58---The first day of May---"May Day"--- has long been dedicated to the cause of labor and of working men and women. To compete with the Communist May Day celebrations,in 1955 Pope Pius XII instituted this day as a memorial to Saint Joseph the Worker. The feast invites us to reflect on labor not only from the political but also from the spiritual standpoint. While hard labor was introduced as an inherited curse of sin (Gn 3:17-19),it would be given a redemptive value with the coming of Jesus. Matthew introduces Jesus, the incarnate Son of God,as one from craftsman's family. This is a reworking of the more primitive tradition found in the gospel of Mark)6:3) that identifies Jesus himself-----not only Joseph----as a carpenter. In the course of his public ministry,Jesus chooses twelve close associates from the ranks of fishermen and tax collectors and describes his mission as "work that the Father gave to accomplish" (see Jn 5:36). The value that early Christians placed on work can be gleaned from the apostle Paul's insistence that "if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat"(2Thes 3:10).

The New Catechism of the Catholic Church (n 2431) states: "The principal task of the state
is to guarantee...that those who work and produce can enjoy the fruits of their labors and thus feel encouraged to work efficiently and honestly."

COMPASSES. About the 13th century C.E. men began to use a magnetic needle floating in a bowl of water--a crude compass. But it was nothing new.Bacteria contain strings of magnetic particles just the right size to make a compass. These guide them to their preferred environments. Magnetic has been found in many other organisms--- birds, bees, butterflies, dolphins, mollusks and others. Experiment s indicates that homing pigeons can return home by sensing the earth's magnetic field. It is now generally accepted that one of the ways migrating birds find their heads.

DESALINATION.Men build huge factories to remove roots that suck up seawater, but filter it through membranes that remove the salt. One species of mangrove,Avicennia, using glands on the underside of its leaves, gets rid of the excess salt,Sea birds, such as gulls, pelicans, cormorants, albatross and petrels, drink sea water and by means of glands in their heads remove the excess salt that gets into their blood. Also penguins, sea turtles and sea Iguanas drink salt water, removing the excess salt.

LIGHTING.Thomas Edison is credited with inventing the light bulb. But it is not too efficient, as it loses energy in the form of heat.Fire flies do better as they flash their lights on and off. They produce cold light that loses no energy. Many sponges, fungi, bacteria and worms glow brightly. One, called the railroad worm,is like "head light" and 11 white or pale green pairs of "windows".Many cat fish, viper fish and constellation fish,to name a few.Microorganism in the ocean surf light up and sparkle by the millions.

"Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate."--MK 10:1-12

Moses enacted not a commandment but a permission to regulate the relationship between a man and his divorced wife(Dt24:1-4). Implicit here is the admonition that a wife, who for any reason has had sexual intercourse with another man, could not cohabit again with her husband. The book of Deuteronomy notes that a man could divorce his wife for 'erwat dabar, literally,"the exposure of a thing," a Hebrew expression referring to a wife's immodest exposure to another man.The ambiguity of the expression resulted in a rabbinical debate regarding the reason(dabar) for allowing divorce. As a rabbi (Jews Priest), Jesus is presented the terms of the dispute.Jesus says that divorce was permitted because of the deliberate determination of the Israelites to disobey God(v5). Since they have lost the capacity to maintain their commitment with Yahweh, they have also lost the will to maintain a committed relationship with their spouses.Divorce thus is a grave insult to God the Creator for it downgrades and deforms the original image of male and female God has set from the beginning of creation.

IF SOMEONE steps on my toes and I react saying, "Thank you so much for your kindness," I am being ironic.Irony is a figure of speech by which I express an idea which is the opposite of the literal meaning of my words. But there is,apart from this irony of speech, another kind of irony. It is the irony of situation. As Webster defines it,it is "a state of affairs or events that is the reverse of what was or was to be expected." Now the Bible is replete with this second kind of irony, particularly in the four gospels. This is not too surprising because ,after all,Jesus was often "the reverse of what...was to be expected."

In Mt2:1-12 The Visit of the Magi scene is entirely built on the irony of situation. For indeed, when God sends his only begotten Son to the Chosen People of Israel,we expect this Son to be warmly welcomed. All the more so that many prophets down the ages had predicted the coming of the "Prince of Peace" (Is9:5) who would be "Emmanuel" or God-with-us (Is 7:14). Not only that, but the Scriptures had specified that his coming would be heralded by the apparition of a marvelous star (Nm 24:17) and that, furthermore, all this would happen in Bethlehem(Mi5:1).
Yet,the irony of it is that, although Herod and "all the chief priests and scribes of the people"(v4) have all the data at the tip of their fingers, they can't put two and two together.Only some visiting astrologers from abroad, foreigners ignorant of the Scriptures and of any information concerning the promised Messiah--king,are the ones who put two and two together and journey to Bethlehem. Here Matthew is presenting us in a sort of cameo scene a situation which summarizes his entire gospel. His message is crystal clear:the Jews )who should have been the first to welcome Jesus) did not welcome him,but instead rejected him violently, whereas pagans would eventually (after the death and resurrection of Jesus) be the ones to accept him. Thus the whole destiny of Jesus is a lived- out irony. With him entering the picture, things are never quite what can be expected. As he himself concluded at one point: "I bless you, Father,Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to little children" (Mt11:25).

    God is full of surprises.

Perhaps because most writers want to deal with the "big questions" of life, and the Bible is the ultimate book of life's big questions: Who I am? Why am I here? Is there a God? Does life have any meaning or purpose?

How difficult it is for some highly intelligent people to admit that in their own wisdom they can't answer life's ultimate questions.
The well-known astrophysicist Fred Hoyle said:" A common-sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super intellect has monkeyed with physics,as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature". Yet he remains an unbeliever.

The late Carl Sagan spoke of "some kind of force or power" that enabled the universe to create itself.

The majority of us as Christians may feel unqualified to debate such intellectual giants. But it's not God's purpose to refute human wisdom with intellectual arguments.Instead, He confounds human wisdom and power by displaying His greater wisdom and power. He does this by saving ordinary people like you and me through the "message of the cross" (1 Cor1:18). The Truth that Jesus died for our sins and rose again is viewed as foolishness by the world.

God's best evidence to refute worldly wisdom is a transformed life. What a privilage to bear this message!

"But that we may not offend them".---Mt 17:22-27

---Taxation was particularly heavy in the time of Jesus. After Palestine was incorporated into the Roman empire, the inhabitants paid poll taxes which were collected by the agents of the imperial treasury. Indirect taxes on products and import duties were also collected at important crossroads, markets, and entries into towns. The male Jews were also required to pay tax for the time, the temple was already destroyed but taxes were still collected to support rabbinic schools.

Payment of taxes connotes empires, taxes were levied on subjects.Free citizens did not pay taxes. For the evangelist,Christians are not obliged to pay the temple tax for they are already free men and women as regards God. But since nonpayment of the temple tax--and taxes due to the empire--will result in scandal and other difficulties, the evangelist writes about an incident in Jesus' life in which he consents to the payment of the temple tax in order that other people will not be offended. It is in this spirit that Paul writes to the Christians in Rome:"Pay to all their dues, respect to whom respect is due, honor is due"(Rom 13:7).

A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not Know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people Know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it: and Christ, because He was the only man who knows to the full what temptation means."

Psychiatrist Karl Menninger has demonstrated that mentally retarted individuals respond for more when there is some physical contact between them and their therapists, An article published in a medical journal pointed out that patients who have heart attacks stabilize far more quickly when someone who loves them is present to hold their hand. It has also been shown that cerebral palsy victims move more normally after experiencing the stimulus of touch" (Harold J. Sala, Joyfully Single in a Couple's world, Mandaluyong City: OMF Literature Inc., 1996,p.99).

This connection between touch and health appears also, but transposed to the level of spiritual realities, in the Johannine writings. There the connection is between touch and faith. Not that faith depends on touch. On the contrary, it should not, as John 20:19-31 doubting Thom Episode. is at pains to stress with words of Jesus, "Blest are they who have not seen and have believed". But that is the ideal faith, the one not feeding on sight and touch. However, elsewhere in the Johannine writings it seems implicity a greed that touch and play a certain role in the birth of faith. For example, the prologue to the First Letter of John alludes nostalgically, with a sort of still awe-filled astonishment, to the fact that " we have touched with our own hands the Word of life"(1Jn1:1). What John was able to do, pour doubting Thomas is here also requesting.Perhaps we should not be too hard on him for wanting to "touch with his own hands the Word of life." Isn't such a touch essentially healing for a weak faith (just as it is for a weak body, according to modern medecine)? At any rate, the beauty of it all is that Jesus does not condemn doubting Thomas (who stands for all of us at times) and invites him to have weak faith healed by touch. Which humble graciousness in turn touchess our hearts with another kind of touch---of which we are all so much in need.

IN GREEK antiquity much teaching and many so-called "divine communications" were delivered in enigmatic form. For example, the most famous ancient oracle was that of the god Apollo at Delphi. It was delivered through a medium, a woman ever fifty Known as the Pythia. Her words were often couched in highly ambiguous verse. In Italy the prophetess of Cumae, known as the Sibyl, also delivered enigmatic oracles. In Greek legend the sphinx was an omniscient being who communicated by riddles. In all those cases it seems that the teacher or revealer wanted to prepare the listeners mind by teasing it with an intentionally obscure statement (riddle, enigma, or comprehension on the alertness or ingenuity of the listener. The Hebrew marshal (proverb, parable, allegory) was often intentionally enigmatic, as were also the parable of Jesus (which he would explain privately to his inner circle.).

Throughout the fourth gospel we see Jesus deliberately using enigmatic language as a preparation for a special revelation. Usually he begins with the material concerns but in a spiritual sense, thus endeavoring to draw his listeners towards concerns of another order. This usually produces a misunderstanding , which in turn prompt's' Jesus to provide first revelation. This is followed by a second misunderstanding, which prompt's a further revelation, and so on. The conversation of Jesus with Nicodemus (Jn3:1-21), for example, contains a veritable cascade of revelations given in this Fashion.

In Jn6:24-35 The bread of Life Episode follows the same pattern.First we have an enigmatic statement, then a misunderstanding and this followed by a further revelation. Here the misunderstandings arise around the (intentionally) ambiguous use of the terms "work","food","bread","life","hunger",and "heaven".
We may sometimes regret not having been among the listeners of Jesus. But it is far from certain that we would have understood him any better than his contemporaries.

Why the deceptions? If truth is really on the side of the RH bill and that poor and women are really to be served by it, why take resort to such deceptions?

We're better off now compared with 50 years ago, the average human now earns nearly three times as much money (corrected for inflation's hard to find any region in the world that's wise off now that it was then, even though the global population has more than doubled over that period.
Population growth is not a threat. Although the world population is growing, the rate of the increase has been falling for 50 years. Across the globe, national birthrates are lower now than in the 1960, in the less developed world, the birthrate has roughly halved. This is happening despite people living longer and infant--mortality rates dropping.According to a UN estimate, population will start falling once it peaks at 9.2 billion in 2075--so there is every prospect of feeding the world forever. After all, there are all ready seven billion people on Earth, and they are eating better and better every decade.

"The math is simple .Birth rates have fallen so far and so fast that the thinning ranks of the young can no longer support the burgeoning numbers of retirees in country. Greece and Spain are already going over the demographic cliff. similar situations in Japan,China,South Korea, Taiwan,Singapore, and Europe.

Sec. Arsenia Balicasan NEDA Director General Admitted that the birth rate of the Philippines, at 1.98% is already,as it is,lower than the UN prescribed rate for the Philippines at 2.1% So, what's all the fuss about enacting the RH Bill?

To illustrate:it was once believed that the earth was flat. Now it has been established for a certainly that it is spherical in shape. That it is a fact.It was believed that the earth was the center of the universe and that the heavens revolved earth revolves in an orbit around the sun. This, too,is a fact. Many things that were once only debated theories have been established by the evidence as solid fact, reality, truth.would an investigation of the evidence for evolution leave one on the same solid ground?Interestingly, ever since Charles Darwin's book The Origin of Species was published in 1859,various aspects of the theory have been a matter of considerable disagreement even among top evolutionary scientists.Today, that dispute is more and it is enlightening to consider what advocates of evolution themselves are saying about the matter.

    Evolution Under Assault

The scientific magazine Discover put the situation this way:" not only under attack by fundamentalist Christians, but is also being questioned by reputable scientists.Among paleontologist, scientists who study the fossil record, there is growing dissent from the prevailing view of Darwinism.Francis Hitching an evolutionist and author and author of the book The Neck of the Giraffe, stated:"For all its acceptance in the scientific world as the great unifying principle of biology,Darwinism, after a century and a quarter,is in a suprising amount of trouble."

After an important conference of some 150 specialists in evolution held in Chicago,Illinois,a report concluded:"[evolution] is undergoing its broadest and deepest revolution in nearly 50 years. ...Exactly how evolution happened is now a matter of great controversy among biologist ...No clear resolution of the controversies was in sight."
Paleontologist Niles Eldredge, a prominent evolutionist, said:"The doubt that has infiltrated the previous,sm*gly confident certitude of evolutionary biology's last twenty years has inflamed passions."He spoke of the "lack of total agreement even within the warring camps," and added,"things really are in an uproar these days...Sometimes it seems as though there are as many variations on each[evolutionary]theme as there are individual biologists."
Britain's New Scientist observed that "an increasing number of scientists, most particularly a growing number of evolutionists...argue that Darwinian evolutionary theory is no genuine Scientific theory at all.

People think of a Prophet as one has the power to predict future events. The biblical prophet (Hebrew nabi, Greek prophetes), however, basically one who speaks for God. And so the prophet of ten says," Thus says the Lord," or "Listen to the word of the Lord." He rarely, if at all, speaks on his own. His actions and his very life are also prophecies, that is, medium of God's message.

There are all kinds of Prophets in Israel. there are those who belong to prophetic guilds and those who profess their singular call. There are genuine prophets--and there are false prophets. It is not so easy to distinguish one from the other.

In Mt7:15-20, Jesus, gives us an important criterion--the moral life of the prophet. The genuineness of the prophet is Known by the kind of fruit it bears. A true prophet is one who lives simply, and announces the word of the Lord in its purity--whether for the good or ill of the people or the individual addressed. A true prophet cares for the people, defends the rights of the poor and the weak, and is unafraid to confront the proud and the mighty if they displease the Lord. A false prophets is something else. According to Jesus, false prophets are "ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing. They appear gentle and pure outside but are really opportunists who look at the people not as "sheep" to defend and guide but as a source of profit for themselves. They would even alter their message to please the hearers..

why Catholics Call A priest 'Father'?

I f that was observed literally among the disciples, why did Paul call himself 'father'?

1Cor4:14-16--"I am writing this not to shame you, but to instruct you as my beloved children. Even if you have countless guides to Christ, you do not have many fathers, for I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel." sintido kumon

St. Paul calls Timothy 'my son' (2Tim1:2). Paul addressed himself "father of Philemon." (Philemon1:10_) meaning spiritual father in Christ.

But nobody can prove from any source that early Christians called the apostles 'Brother Paul' or Minister Peter' or 'Pastor John' as anti- Catholic always do.
