Agence France-Presse (AFP), via The Huffington Post, reports that on Monday, June 4, the Vatican "sharply criticized" the book, Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics, which written by Sister Margaret Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy religious order and emeritus professor of Christian ethics at Yale Divinity School. According to AFP, the Vatican said that Farley's work "contradicted church teaching on issues like masturbation, homosexuality, and marriage." The Vatican also slammed Farley for her "defective understanding" of Catholic theology. As such, the Vatican said the book could do "grave harm to the faithful."

The AFP article quoted Farley, who said that she "never intended the book to reflect current official Catholic teaching" because she "wrote it to explore sexuality via various religious traditions, theological resources, and human experience." Curiously enough, Farley's book came out in 2006.

The report noted that the critique of Farley's book "comes amid the Vatican's recent crackdown on the largest umbrella group of American sisters." The report revealed that last month, "the Vatican last month essentially imposed martial law on the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, accusing it of undermining church teaching and imposing certain 'radical feminist themes' that were incompatible with Catholicism."

    Solomon was a young man charged with the responsibility of governing one of the most prosperous Kingdoms in the ancient Near East. Israel was a significant power then,her domain extending from the Euphrates River to the border of Egypt. Responsible for so much,Solomon Knew he needed help.So when God asked the young King what He could do for him,Solomon did not ask to be healthy or wealthy.He asked to be wise (1Kings3:9). This request pleased the Lord.
    God said to him,"Because you have asked this things,...I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart"(v v 11-12).
    The word translated "understanding" in Solomon's request (v .9) actually means "hearing". God gave Solomon a hearing heart so he could judge the people and "discern between good and evil."

    Wise men and woman hear God through His Book.They read other books,of course,but they judge them all by the Word of god.There is no greater wisdom.

    THE GENTLE MASTERY OF CHRIST
    "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest."--MT 11:28-30
    Can anyone imagine oneself following the 613 commandments of the Law? It is certainly a great burden,if not a load impossible to carry! Yet, the religious authorities expect people to be faithful to the minute regulations.Jesus says that the teachers of the Law the tie up heavy burdens that are hard to carry and lay them on people's shoulder's---burdens they will not lift a finger to move (Mt23:4). What Jesus offers,instead,is his easy "yoke". The yoke is a wooden farm implement shaped to fit a person's shoulder's and could be hitched to pull a load. It is made to fit two beasts of burden to effectively till the often arid Palestinian ground. In Jewish tradition,the yoke refers to the Law and the commandments,or to balancing the teachings of rabbis. In Jesus' view,the yoke of the Law becomes a light burden if understood at its very core. The Law is not an imposition but a guide to right living and loving relationship with God.The yoke of the Law which Jesus carries is his obedience to the will of the Father. He accepts the will of the Father with love and docility, and so it ceases to be an imposition.This is the kind of attitude that the disciples must have.

    You've probably heard the story of Jonah and the great fish.But did you Know that the disobedient prophet was "swallowed up" not once but three times?
    Let me explain.
    First, Jonah was swallowed up by by prejudice. The Ninevites were a wicked and idolatrous people (Jonah 1:2), and God wanted Jonah to preach repentance to them. But Jonah wanted them to feel God's wrath (4:2), so he boarded a ship and headed in the opposite direction(1:3).
    Second, Jonah was swallowed up by the sea. A wild storm was battering the boat, so the superstitious sailors cast lots to find out who was to blame,and the "the lot fell on Jonah"(v.12). As the swirling waters engulfed him, he sank toward certain death.
    Third, Jonah was swallowed up by a large fish that God had prepared to rescue him (1:17). Inside the fish 3 days,he confessed his sin and promised to obey God (2:1-9). After he was delivered, he followed God's directive and preached judgement to Nineviteh, and all the people repented (3:1-5).
    Jonah flees from the will God for his life. What he is yet to realize fully is that it is impossible to hide from God! We try to flee from God in vain! The story continues having Jonah eaten by a whale and then vomited to on a beach after three days. The spectacular nature of this story only serves to emphasize the point that it is useless to try to hide from God.He will always find you!

    Jonah is angry with God because God has had mercy upon the people on Nineveh.This is a very misguided anger.

    "I am the way and the truth and the life". Jn 14:1-6
    ---In the Old Testament,the Torah or the Law of Moses was the way,the truth, and the life (see Ps119:9-17,30,37). In the New Covenant, God sends Jesus,and through Jesus,God becomes personal in his dealings with humanity (see Gal4:4-5;MK1:1). Jesus is indeed very personal in his teachings and most especially in his relationships with men and women.He does not just heal; He touches as many as he can (MK6:56). He is not satisfied with numbers--rather,he reaches out to specific persons in the midst of the thick crowd.He reaches out to Zacchaeus (LK19:1); he singles out for cure the the blind Bartimaeus (MK10:46). In the New Covenant, hope is not in a method,procedure, or in cold letters of the law.Hope is in the person of Jesus. Through Jesus, and in him,one comes to the Father,Knows the Father, and sees the Father.

    One popular and influencial novelist of our day epouses a godless philosophy that is totally self-centered.The hero of one of her early novels says, "The word we must never be spoken....I see the face of a god,and I raise this god over the earth,...who will grant them joy and peace and pride.This god,this one word:I". What are the results of living entirely for ourselves and not loving our neighbors? Such a lifestyle may bring pride,and according to the author of the quote above,pride is the sum of all the virtue. Yet ruthless self-concern doesn't bring joy,nor does a self-centered lifestyle bring peace.One discerning reviewer made this statement about the selfish novelist:"She seems to be one of the unhappiest persons who ever lived."

    God's Word sets forth the precise opposite of such a self-centered philosophy of life.

    British writer Arthur Porritt gives this sad description of how atheist Charles Brad laugh was buried:"No prayer was said at the grave. indeed, not a single word was uttered.The remains, placed in a light coffin,were lowered into the earth in a quite unceremonious fashion as if carrion were being hustled out of sight." Porritt said that he came away "heart-frozen," realizing how the "loss of faith in the continuity of human personality after death gives death an appalling victory."
    Life is not a brief candle-flame that death will forever extinguish.Christiana in particular can rejoice that Christ "abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel"(2timothy1:10),that He is "the resurrection and the life,"and that all who believe like Jesus' resurrection body,and we "shall shine...like the stars forever"(Daniel 12:3).

    In marking events in Israel's history, writers and historians point to a time they call "the Second Temple period". It encompasses the events after the Jews' return from exile in Babylon (with the Edict of Cyrus in 538 BC) and the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem and the temple under Zerubbabel. This "second temple" replaces the one built by Solomon, and which was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BC. The second Temple period ended in 70 AD, when the Roman army destroyed the temple in the course of putting down the Jewish revolt.

    RELIGION AND REALITY
    "Religion and reality don't mix."--that's what a group in Grand Rapids, Michigan,believes. These 24 people call themselves "free thinkers" who have chosen "reality over religion". Most of them grow up in church going families but have left their faith.
    Like those free-thinkers,two Filipino students from prominent families become deeply disturbed by religious people who exploited the poor.They too rejected all religion.They sought reality in alleviating the suffering of the masses.But eventually they began to sense that life without God left them empty.Through a series of near-miraculous events,both students came to know Jesus as their Savior and Lord.They continued to work among the poor, but with a new perspective.They found the reality of a living faith in contrast to mere external religion.

    The Israelites also wondering why God seemed unreal to them.They had gone through the motions of religion but continued to live for themselves (Isaiah 58:2,4). Isaiah told them to repent and became real--to free the oppressed, to share their bread with the hungry,to house the poor,and to clothe the naked.Only then would God be real to them(vv.6-9).

    If we truly Know Jesus.religion and reality do mix.
    When people turn away from God,They think they will be free But only Christ who died for them Will bring reality.

    God has used certain verse to make a remarkable impact on the world.For example,the author of Pilgrim's Progress,John Bunyan,touched the lives of thousands by preaching from John6:37 "All that the Father gives Me I will by no means cast out."

    Noted reformer Martin Luther greatly influenced the course of Roman Catholic Church history because of his understanding of Romans1:17,"The just shall live by faith." And missionary pioneer William Grey introduced,the gospel to India after being touched by the words of Isaiah54:2,"Enlarge the place of your tent."

    A man in the community was featured in a newspaper article because he enjoys ridiculing the Christian faith.He boldly declares his conviction that life has no meaning and that we have no basis for hope of life beyond the grave.He defiantly rejects the evidence for the existence of God and the historical record of Christ's resurrection.

The world seems *gly, bad, and without hope.There,that's the cry of despair of an old man who will die in despair.But that's exactly what I resist.I know I shall die in hope.But that hope needs a foundation."

    Within a month Sartre was dead.I wonder if he ever discovered that foundation.God's Word teaches that only basis for hope is the empty grave and the resurrected Christ(1Cor15)

    FAITH PRODUCES MIRACLES

    IN THE three preceding episodes (MK4:35-41:the calming of the storm at sea;Mk5:1-20:the healing of the Gerasene demoniac;MK5:21-43:Jairu's daughter and the and the bleeding woman),Mark emphasizes the connection between faith and miracle:faith produces miracles. This, incidentally,is the normal,biblical position on the matter.The rationalistic,atheistic approach always assumes the opposite,namely, that miracle.In Mk6:1-6. Mark draws the natural conclusion of the biblical principle that faith produces miracles: without faith,there can be no miracle.Why? He does not say.But the reason is this: outside a context of faith, a miracle is meaningless and cannot be called a miracle,that is,a supernatural intervention of God.At best,it can be labeled an extraordinary occurrence which science,says the atheist,will no doubt explain one day...This is the atheist's peculiar brand of "faith": faith in science instead of God.

    Protestant Clergy Abuse Equals or Exceeds Catholic Clergy Abuse
    Posted on June 20, 2008 by dannimoss
    This article is courtesy of ethicsdaily.com. It was originally posted to the site July 6, 2007.
    ~~~
    By Bob Allen
    The Associated Press reported recently that three insurance companies receive upward of 260 reports each year of young people under 18 being sexually abused by Protestant clergy, challenging the assumption that clergy sexual abuse is an exclusively Catholic problem that does not take place in other churches.
    That is a higher number than the annual average of 228 “credible accusations” brought against Catholic clerics in records reported by the Catholic Church in response to media scrutiny, a priest observed in a Fox News commentary questioning why the story isn’t garnering more attention.
    While the report about abuse in Protestant churches doesn’t absolve guilty Catholic priests or those who enabled them, said Father Jonathan Morris, it offers a more complete picture. “The problem of sexual abuse has no denominational boundaries,” he wrote.
    The AP obtained figures on sex-abuse claims from three companies that insure the majority of Protestant churches in America–Church Mutual Insurance Company, GuideOne Insurance and Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company.
    The largest company, Church Mutual, reported an average of about 100 sex-abuse cases a year involving minors over the last decade. GuideOne, with about half the clients of Church Mutual, said it has received an average of 160 reports of sex abuse against minors every year for the past two decades. Brotherhood Mutual said it received an average of 73 reports of child sex abuse and other sexual misconduct every year for the last 15 years but did not specify how many victims are younger than 18.
    That compares to at least 10,667 people who reported plausible claims of childhood sexual abuse by 4,392 priests or deacons between 1950 and 2002 in a study commissioned by the Catholic Church with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York as part of its response to its clergy abuse scandal. That represents 4 percent of the approximately 110,000 diocesan and religious priests who served in the United States in those years.
    The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops offers an extensive annual report monitoring sexual-abuse claims. There were 635 new allegations reported in 2006, 9 percent fewer than in 2005. A total of 14 allegations (2 percent) involved children under the age of 18 in 2006. The remaining 621 allegations were by adults alleging abuse as minors in previous years.
    Protestant numbers are harder to come by, the AP reported, because the denominations are less centralized than the Catholic Church. Many churches are independent, making reporting even harder.
    “This bad news for Protestant Churches is sad news for all of us,” Father Morris wrote. “I would prefer the problem be limited to any one church–even if that church were my own–because it would mean more kids would be safe. But as I have said repeatedly over the last few years, the problem of sexual abuse of minors is not an issue of religious affiliation because there is nothing religious about abusing children. The phenomenon of sexual abuse of minors in church settings is the story of sick human beings taking advantage of their position of moral authority to prey on the weak and vulnerable. If Catholic clergy were to be faithful to their church’s teaching, there would be no abuse in the Catholic Church. The same goes for Protestant clergy. The problem, then, is not one of corrupt doctrine, but of individuals being unfaithful to the most basic precepts of their own religious belief.”
    Insurance officials told the AP the numbers of sex-abuse cases has remained steady over the past two decades, but churches are doing more to prevent child-sexual abuse by conducting background checks, installing windows in nurseries and play areas and requiring at least two adults in a room with a child.
    Still, said Patrick Moreland of Church Mutual, churches are particularly vulnerable to abusers.
    “By their nature, congregations are the most trusting of organizations, so that makes them attractive targets for predators,” he said. “If you’re a predator, where do you go? You go to a congregation that will welcome you.”
    The early followers of Jesus Christ were forced to worship in secret locations.To help them identify fellow believers they scratched on the ground a secret symbol---the fish.Why fish? The letters in the Greek word for fish---IXOYE--stand for I--Jesus,X--Christ,O--Gods,Y---Son,E---Savior.
    "There has been none greater than John the Baptist".Mt11:11-15
    In the mid 50's AD, when Paul traveled through the interior of Asia Minor and came to Ephesus, he found people who had received the baptism of John in the river Jordan (see Acts19:1-3). They probably thought of John as the Messiah.Paul had to tell them that John's baptism of repentance was but a preparation for Jesus who baptizes with water and the holy Spirit.This episode hints that the Baptist movement had not ceased even when the Christian faith was beginning to spread from Jerusalem to the other parts of the world.There was "competition" between the two movements.The stories about the Baptist in the gospels have a tinge of polemics in them.Through them,the evangelists situate John in his proper place:he is the precursor,not the rival,of Jesus.
    John is a courageous man who,in the tradition of the prophets of old,disturbs and sows fear in the hearts of corrupt leaders,both political and religious.Prior to the gospel episode, he has been imprisoned for speaking up against the adulterous union of Herod and Herodias.Here,Jesus pays tribute to John. No one is greater than John because he is the least among Jesus' disciple is greater than him.This is so because John belongs to the Old Testament,the time of promise,whereas those who are with Jesus and believe in him as the Messiah belong to the time of fulfillment.In Jesus,the Kingdom of God has come.
    Revelation7:2-4,9-14
    verse 4 I heard the number of those who had been marked with the seal, one hundred and forty-four thousand marked from every tribe of the Israelites:
    The huge crowd of People worshipping before the throne of the Lamb signify for us the multitude of those who will be saved. The number 144000 is not taken literally. It merely tells us that the numbers of those to be saved will be virtually uncountable.That there is this many gives each of us added hope that we,too,will be numbered among them! At least, this is what we should all be aspiring toward.
    THE SECRET OF JESUS' RESERVOIR OF ENERGY
    IT TOOK 2,5000 years of exploration to discover the source of the Nile, the world's longest river. The Greek historian Herodotus, who visited Egypt in 451 BC , was the first to travel down the Nile as far as the cataract, Aswan, in search of the Nile's source.He was followed by many other explorer's from century to century. They all tried to solve the mystery of where all this water came from.It was not until the 19th Century that the discovery of Lake Victoria in 1858 and of Lake Albert in 1864 revealed what were the Nile's headstreams. But it was not until the 1960's that a detailed study of the upper gorges of the blue Nile was completed.
    In MK1:29-39 The cure of simon' s Mother -in- law scene shows Jesus in action during a typical day at Capernaum.
    All day long people practically assault him with their many needs, and he gives tirelessly of himself to all who come to him. And this is repeated day after day, for he is constantly on the move.Yet, he doesn't seem to undergo what we call in modern parlance the burnout syndrome. He seems to have an endless reservoir of energy. What is the secret of this man's spiritual power? What hidden headstreams provide him with a constantly renewed supply of patience,love,compassion,tenderness?
    The second part of our passage holds the Key to the mystery of Jesus hidden sources of life. The text says: "Rising early the next morning,he went off to a lonely place in the desert;prayer was what fed Jesus' unlimited supply of spiritual energy. If we look at the great saints of history who were also,often enough giants of action, we notice that all of them carved out of their busy schedules large chunks of solitude and prayer. None of them ever said:" My work is my prayer." They all just imitated Jesus. His secret sources of renewal were theirs also.
    God always seems to offer us another chance when we fail.This is a great source of hope for us. He does not condemn us for our failures, but seeks to encourage to get up and to try again. LET US BE FAITHFUL IN SEEKING TO HONOR GOD'S COMMITMENT TO US SO THAT WE WILL NOT BE ABANDONED LIKE A FRUITLESS FRUIT TREE. we can be sure that the help of the Holy Spirit will always accompany us.
    Aside from the traditional Jesus "icons" like Jesus the Teacher, the Miracle Worker or the Suffering Messiah, we have new images of him, like The laughing Christ, The Smiling Christ, or the Modern Christ working at computers or texting a message.Do these nontraditional images of Jesus appeal to you?
    LIFE COMES FROM DEATH
    ANYONE VISITING the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican can now admire the great masterpieces of Michelangelo adoring the chapel as they appear in their pristine beauty thanks to a work of restoration which has just recently been completed. One of the frescoes decorating the chapel is called"The Last Judgement". It was painted on the end-wall of the chapel. Another famous fresco is the ceiling fresco describing the creation and the Fall. This work alone required four long years of labor, during which time Michelangelo had to paint lying on his back on a scaffold with his arm constantly lifted towards the ceiling. One can only begin to imagine the physical strain involved in such a task. When Hollywood produced a movie in 1965-presenting the life of Michelangelo (with Charlton Heston in the role of the great artist), it in evitably entitled the film The Agony and the Ecstasy.
    There is a Greek proverb which says "chalepata Kala"-"The beautiful things are difficult." This proverb says is reflected in similar sayings like "no pain, no gain." In other words, few worthwhile achievements (if any) are not the result of hard work, sacrifice, suffering.
    In Jn12:20-33 The coming of Jesus' hour contains statements of Jesus expressing basically the same idea." Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life ." Now let us be very clear about one thing. Here Jesus is not initiating anything new as, for example, when he gives us his new commandment (Jn15:12). No, he is simply describing how life functions. Paradoxically, he tells us, life comes from death. This seemingly contradictory statement is true. In fact, we could say that this paradox is the most basic paradox of the universe. It boils down to this:live for yourself and you'll never be happy.Forget yourself, live for others, then you will be happy. In life things work that way. try it
    MOST PEOPLE would agree that divorce is always a tragedy.When a marriage breaks down, at least one of the spouses will need years to recover from the trauma.After having invested years in a relationship (sometimes half a lifetime), one can hardly throw in the towel without a wrenching sense of failure. However, some will say, sometimes staying in the relationship will only make things worse. At least, that is a widely shared conviction.
    Well and good. However, there is the fact (which wont go away, however much psychology and sociology we appeal to) that Jesus condemns divorce absolutely and unequivocally. In his words there are no "Ifs" and "buts" (Even Matthew's so- called "exceptional clause" is no real exception and only dissolves invalid marriages by consanguinity cf. MT.5:32 and 19:9). So what now?
    Actually, serious Christians will rejoice in this apparent "hardness" of Jesus. Because it provides them perhaps the strongest antidote to divorce.This antidote is, according to many experts, the notion of commitment,commitment to one's marriage vows,commitment to the institution of marriage seen as a permanent and unbreakable bond. These experts say something like this:when, One has an iron willed determination to make one's marriage the possibility of divorce.
    Calling it quits is simply an option for one who wants to go the distance with Christ on this issue. Such a commitment will inspire the couple to communicate deeply, to face their difficulties as they emerge, to do the "maintenance work" required for the preservation of any relationship. Such a marriage will not end in divorce, because ultimately it is built on an act of faith in Christ's vision of marriage as being the only healthy one. True, idea of separation.(1Cor7:11), but even then no divorce is contemplated, and the separated spouses must remain single. Thus the Church has always admitted the eventuality of failed marriage's followed by separation.But such failures must be avoided at all costs. And commitment to one's marriage vows seems to be the best prevention to marriage break up.
    The law maker's fancy for divorce laws, the propensity of celebrities to apply for annulment--now imitated by ordinary folk, the lifestyle espoused by the youth, the necessity of going abroad to seek jobs, and the higher incidence of single of single parenthood threaten the basic unit of society. In what ways have you tried to steer the Christian family to safety?
    'Non -denominational Church', an easy way to attract different Christian religious groups to their sect. All Christians are welcome in their gatherings;but after some prayers and teachings, the pastor slowly start to inject protestant doctrines to all those who are listening to him.If you are a Catholic, will open the Bible and start to criticize 'statue making' and 'Mother Mary'. It has thousand of divisions with contrary views and different names as their members follow miracle workers and preachers of their choice.
    The name game!
    The name 'Born Again' comes from an unathentic translation of the Bible: Jesus said to Nicodemus:"Truly,truly I say to you, unless one is born from above, he is born of water and the Spirit.(Jn:3-5)
    Here in the original Greek manuscript of this gospel, John never uses the word 'Born again' ("pallin" is again; born "gennethe"). All Catholic translations are using the correct word written in Greek, "anothen" which means "from above" or "born above" when they translated.The name 'born again' itself is an artificial creation of some Protestant ministers, and was never spoken by Jesus!
    Born Again people believe that when they confess "I am born born again! just say "I accept Jesus as Lord and Savior" we become worthy to go to heaven! It is like instant noodles, an easy way and short cut to go to heaven.
    We have evidence from 150 AD onwards that the Christians decorated their tombs and cata tombs with paintings of Jesus,Mary,, dove cross,fish etc. Excavations for a new basilica at Nazareth brought to light a mosaic painting of the Eucharist which dates back 63 AD.
    The Vatican censure of Ms. Farley's book is beside the point, inconsequential, desperate, clutching at straws, no effect. It's because she teaches at Yale Divinity School, a Protestant institution, which, obviously, approved of her work. It's like Ms. Farley's way of saying, "Up yours, Vatican overlords!"
