InterAksyon.com reported that on Thursday (August 16) there was a robbery that was marked by gunfire in Pasay City’s Metropoint mall. This caused the MRT operations to temporarily stop that afternoon.
The report quoted Chief Superintendent Benito Estipona, Southern Police District director, who revealed that "four members of the ’Martilyo Gang’ robbed a pawnshop inside the mall at the corner of Taft and EDSA, carting away a still undetermined amount of jewelry." He added that the robbers fired their guns in the air to cause panic and cover their escape.
The report also cited information from Atty. Hernan Cabrera, spokesman of the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), who the sound of gunfire "caused panic among civilians, causing them to run towards the train station." Moreover, "the Metro Rail Transit (MRT3) also suspended operations at its Taft station, which intersects the LRT line at the Metropoint area, as passengers and civilians in the area sought shelter inside the station." The MRT3 resumed operations at a little past 4 p.m. that day.
The investigation is still ongoing. The incident is the latest mall robbery to hit Metro Manila.
