GMA News Online reports that Janet Lim Napoles' lawyer, Atty. Lorna Kapunan, asserted in a TV interview on Tuesday, August 13, that her client's wealth came from legitimate businesses, including the trade of pork and other meat products.
The report quoted the lawyer as saying in an interview on GMA News TV’s News To Go that Napoles' mother's hardworking ways paved the way for her daughter Janet's success as a businesswoman. "Ironically enough, their business really started in pork," Kapunan said, adding that the Lim clan were "smart enough" to invest the earnings of their meat business in other small ventures.
In a series of reports, the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) revealed that Napoles "is the alleged mastermind of a lucrative and long-running racket that funnels lawmakers’ pork barrel funds to bogus NGOs." Napoles denied the charges in a roundtable discussion with PDI's editorial staff but was unable to clearly explain where her money came from.
