Top 10 Pinoy Chocolates
Even the most discriminating chocolate connoisseur will agree, these homegrown confections still hit our sweet spot.
Published on: Sep 24, 2010 - 9:00am

Local brands of of chocolate always conjure up childhood memories--as pasalubong from parents, titas, or older siblings, or the many times you forked over prized coins to the neighborhood tindahan for a couple of precious pieces. These homegrown varieties defined our Pinoy childhood long before their imported counterparts became as accessible as they are today.

Nowadays, no matter how sophisticated and well-travelled our palates have become when it comes to this cherished cocoa confection, we will, once in a while, get a hankering for a sweet fix of these local brands--just the sight, smell, or first bite of which has the power to immediately transport us into our carefree and innocent days, like that pivotal scene from Ratatouille. checked out the local supermarkets and shops and sampled the local chocolates on their shelves, familiar classics and new contenders alike--taking note of taste, texture, size and other distinct standout qualities to see which local chocolates deliver the goods. Here's our top 10:

10. Cloud 9 Classic
Price: around P7.50 per piece

A small bar of caramel, chewy nougat, and peanuts wrapped in thin chocolate, the Cloud 9 Classic bar still has that chocolate magic--peanuts offset the overly sweet chocolate while the nougat adds texture to the usual chocolate bar. Those looking for a quick and cheap chocolate pick-me-up can count on one bar to do the trick.

Sold individually in convenience stores and in packs of 6 or more at groceries, Cloud 9 Classic has remained consistent throughout the years.

9. Goya Dark Mint Chocolates
Price: P25 to P30

Goya's Dark Mint chocolates are circular-shaped nuggets with 9 pieces in a box. Upon opening the box and the foil that keeps the chocolate pieces fresh, a strong mint scents wafts out of the box, a telltale sign of how the chocolates will taste.

The mint taste is stronger than the chocolate flavor, and the semi-sweet chocolate is creamy, soft and smooth and easily melts in the mouth. Those who have a penchant for mint chocolates will find Goya's version a cheap and enjoyable treat.

I tried the Theo and Philo milk chocolate and I have to say, I was very disappointed. For a P95/bar of milk chocolate I expected the quality to be good.
A good quality chocolate should melt in your mouth almost immediately, the texture should also be creamy and soft. Pagkagat ko sa chocolate na ito, I had to chew it for a long time. Waxy pa. I think for the amount of money that they sell this chocolate it should be matched with the same quality.
Sayang, It would have been nice to spread the word about theo and philo since it's a Filipino brand, pero hindi masarap eh. Baka they cater more to the weird flavors rather than the staple ones. Oh well, rant over.

You do know that there are different kinds of chocolates. If every chocolate is the same, then why manufacture other brands? Where's the individuality in that? Oh well...

A lot people here are saying that Theo and Philo is not the number 1 choco just because they haven't tasted it. Pagawa kayo ng website nyo gawa kayo ng sarili nyong top 10. It doesn't indicate in this article that this survey is based on a number of people interviewed. I believe their staff bought some chocolates and tasted them one by one and decided from there. Malay mo nga naman masarap yung Theo and Philo for their sosy taste buds. Not all people like what you like. Gets?

top 10 pinoy chocolates, syempre quality ang pinaguusapan hindi ung kung alin ang kilala. theo and philo is yes quite new pero i-try nyo munq bago kayo mag-comment. lumaki tayo sa cloud 9, goya, ricoa at chocnut pero try nyo rin ung bago para ma-realize nyo kung bakit yun ang nag-top dito. kesa puro negative comments bakit di natin suportahan lahat ng local products natin, wala namang siniraan dito.

I used to munch down on Goya Premium chocolates ... the big ones that came in 2's it felt like you were holding the ten commandments (hahaha) and the small coffin shaped ones - this had a gold and dark brown wrapping. Man I hope Goya brings this back.

this is not a "top ten pinoy chocolates" based on research or survey/popularity. It is based on the tastes and experiences by the WRITER/S of this article who is/are commissioned by spotph to write about what they THINK is the best pinoy-made chocolate for them.. This should be considered an OPINION article, kaya natural lang na may bias.

Well this is a bit late but I have just tried Theo and Philo chocolates yesterday. I dunno if this survey is biased or not, I have to admit it is weird. But maybe it isn't. Afterall how many gourmet "Pinoy Chocolates" are out there? Theo and Philo could be the only one! It is 100% pinoy made, and 150% delicious!! It's seriously good!!!! I'm not paid to write this, but really you have to try the Green Mango and Salt chocolate lol.. They truly deserve the top spot in my opinion.

You gotta try it to believe. rnrnAnd whoever said it's pretentious should try the chocolate first. :) Thank you. Oh yeah btw, I am a big fan of curly tops, flat tops and chocnut but you gotta love a chocolate that doesn't add a lot of things you don't even know. Just sayin'

if people read clearly you guys would notice why the others are in rage by the #1 spot. Most of the choices from 2-10 were place their because they imply the following of Pinoys to these said chocolates. also the fact that all the entries except for theo philo is well known, it gives a connotation that the article has been bias.rnrnthe title should have been "10 Best Tasting Pinoy-made chocolates." or remove theo philo and put a much more suitable choice. Lala should be included, maybe not on the first spot but should definitely be in there. and also nips deserves a place there.

And besides, if the people from felt that Theo & Philo's chocolates are the best that's their choice. Hay.

Hi guys! I'm the founder of Theo & Philo. I just want to mention that this article was a nice surprise. I didn't know anything about this until a few minutes ago when a business colleague e-mailed me this article. So I just want to put to rest some of the assumptions that this article was paid or otherwise started by our company. To prove it, contrary to what the article says, our chocolate is not made in Davao. Rather, our cacao beans are from Davao but the actual processing of the cacao bean to chocolate is done here in Metro Manila. Also, our full name is "Theo AND Philo" not "Theo Philo". We're also very new in the market (we've been available in the market only for about a couple of months); hence the reason why most people have never heard of us. I thank everyone who have tried our chocolates and loved it.

I'm challenging to explain the reason why this unknown product is rated#1 on its so called Top 10 Pinoy chocolates. I have seen so many times before how quickly gives nonsense and sometimes moronic response to comments but have been tight lipped about this issue eventhough a lot have already questioned their motives on making an item number one on its list. I'm questioning if they have been paid or accepting any benefit either monetary or not on rating products in the market. It's your responsibility to make this known because you project yourself as an unbias rating body which clearly is not basing on how you rate products in this article.

How pretentious! Ask your average Juan dela Cruz about this and I bet you, Chocnut, Goya at baka Serge's pa ang isagot niya. I agree with what some have said here na ang kapal nga talaga. You are a disgrace to Filipino entrepreneurs everywhere.rn

I've never heard of Theo Philo, pero yet No1 siya? Weird. rnrnAs for the other local chockies, I agree na dapat Nips nandito (unless you remember Rex Navarette's Racist Snacks skit), to Hany's Chocnut's so a fan favorite it deserved No 1 better than what's this choco. Anything fibisco's good, espcially the cookies.rnrnChoco Mallows? Haha, no wonder may mga nagebebenta sa Makati sidewalks ng plastic packages with at least 20 Mallows each! Don't forget yung Choco Pretzels (na may mga American Indian kids sa cover.)rnrngooglicious, last I remember Serg's advertising anything was in 1992. rn

good u didn't forget choco mallows, ricoa (2 variants), and chocnut (should be number 1 though for sheer popularity---everybody becomes a kid again when they eat chocnut). pwede rin siguro add ang fibisco biscuit na choco covered, masarap din hihihi. i miss SERGs!

Tama sila. Sana nilagay nyo somewhere between top 5-10.

Theo Philo chocolates at number 1? This is a gross attempt of advertising the product. Clearly, this chocolate is not a part of Filipino's list of well loved chocolates throughout time. It's obvious with the rest of the commenters not knowing the product at all. mahiya ka naman Sobrang kapal. Just advertise the product straight and don't include it in a list wherein nilagay mo pa as top 1 which clearly is not. Pakapalan ha!

When I was young, probably in the 70s, I used to love the chocolate gold coins from the Philippines. Nothing like the ordinary gold coins that you buy in the supermarkets or stores. They are very chewy when you eat them and not crunchy. The chewiness is the thing that I crave the most. I've been looking for the same texture for years now but it seems that they discontinued making them. I don't know why. I hope you could help me. Where can I find them? A friend told me that I could buy them @ Makati Commercial. Well, I'm going back to the Philippines this coming December 2010 and I will check Makati Commercial. Wish me luck!rnrnI don't even know if those gold coins are Goya products. Hope so.
