Another Racist Rant Gone Viral: UCLA Student's Anti-Asian Sentiments in the Time of Tsunami

Alexandra Wallace complains about the manners of Asian students

Another racist rant video has gone viral and it’s not John Galliano’s. Alexandra Wallace, a political science student at the University of California Los Angeles, is under fire for posting an anti-Asian racist rant on YouTube where she complains about the manners of Asian students.

"The problem is these hordes of Asian people that UCLA accepts into our school every single year, which is fine. But if you're going to come to UCLA then use American manners,” Wallace said.

In the three-minute video, Wallace mocks an Asian language and faults Asian students for talking on the phone in the library.

"I swear they're going through their whole families just checking on everybody from the tsunami thing," she said.

The video, titled “Asians in the Library,” has since garnered more than 1,000,000 views.

After being condemned by members of the UCLA community and supposedly receiving multiple death threats via e-mail and phone, Wallace contacted university police early Sunday evening and was advised to reschedule her exams after her class schedules and exam loactions were posted online, UCLA newspaper The Daily Bruin reported.

On Monday morning, Wallace issued an apology:

“Clearly the original video posted by me was inappropriate. I cannot explain what possessed me to approach the subject as I did, and if I could undo it, I would. I'd like to offer my apology to the entire UCLA campus. For those who cannot find it within them to accept my apology, I understand.”

UCLA Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students Robert Naples said, “If she’s received a death threat, I find that as deplorable as her original YouTube video. If this is the response of students on campus, we’ve got a lot of work to do."

According to UCLA newspaper The Daily Bruin, Wallace took the video down on Sunday. Still, it hasn't stopped web vigilantes from re-posting, spoofing, even creating music video responses, to the now infamous video.

i think everyone shld focus on their own localities or countries about there own issues of racism before they go international.u shld stop pretending that u are nice, religious people when u ourselves are worse.like you pinoys, i think u have ur own problems with ur indigenous neighbors like the aetas, igorots, muslims n d south and other more.u shld first solve them before u go on feasting to somebodys problems just to escape ur own responsibilities.u call urselves christian people, then go show ur rightiousness to this underprevileged, unfairly treated, oppressed minorities of yours.

Intelligent? Maybe. Smart? No. rnrnIf she honestly knew what she is talking about, she should've expected the backlash. For someone supposedly smart, she sure didn't know what the consequences were.rnrnAnd what's funny is that some of those defending her are the ones she's actually OFFENDING. She was not referring to Asians living in Asia. She's referring to Asians living in America. Asian-Americans. Not Asians. Not even Pinoy.

@calbearrnrnJust because she knows what she is talking about doesn't mean she is right to say those words against a group of people.

Alam po niya ang sinasabi niya. UCLA yan.

@manda elizaldernrnhindi lang naman lawyers ang kailangang makaalam ng terminologies, even ordinary people too. haven't any idea of educating oneself? and the point is, if you say and call these cultural minorities such, then you are being disrespectful. you are trying to dishonor their origins and not simply calling them by their ethnic names. rnrnwords are powerful It is better to know and clarify the meaning of words to avoid erroneous use of such. just suggesting.

Huwag na tayong mag ikot ikot sa terminologies. Hindi naman po tayo lawyers eh. Sa madaling salita, pag ang Pinoy gumamit ng word na "mukhang ita", or "para kang baluga sa kaitiman", or "nognog", or "igorot na katok ng katok sa kotse pag Pasko" - the bottom line is binabastos natin ang ating mga kadugo. Yon lang yon. Tandaan natin na ang reaction should come from the receivers (like these cultural minorities) and not from you people.

@filipina,rnrnGood point. It is sad to know there are (few) people who take it against people who call people "ita", "instik", "arabo" and "bumbay". Following their arguments, how do you think they propose to call these people?rnrnIt appears (and I hope I am wrong) the same people will not mind hearing people call "kano". If this is correct, are these people thinking "kanos" are better people than the others?rnrnrn@princeton and ignorama, rnrnIf we call people "chinese" instead of "intsik", or "arab" instead of "arabo", will you still consider this racist?rnrnWe are also confused. Please enlighten us by letting us know your definition of racist.rnrnRegards,

@princetonrn@ignoramarnrnI am a little confused with what you posted. You see, the "Negrita", "Igorot" and "Ita" you mentioned are all natives of the Philippines and we call them that because it is what they are known for, specially Igorots. They are residents of the Philippines also so we do not harm other race by calling them such. rnrnAbout the "intsik", "arabo" and "bumbay" thing, if I am not mistaken we use the word intsik as tagalog of Chinese; Arabo for Arabian or Arab, and we use Bumbay for Indian. I do not see just how can we be racist when we are just translating those terms in our native tongue. rnrnMaybe, there is confusion. What do you really mean and understand by the word "racist"? Anybody to educate me, please.rnrn@glad...rnyou always amaze me whenever you ask for reasons. Comments are carefully written and always giving people the chance to explain their point.

@princeton and ignorama, rnrnThank you for sharing your views. We wish to understand you better when you said WE ARE THE WORST. There are over 2oo countries in the world. Are you saying you know all these countries (including their cultures and attitudes) that well? In case we were wrong to assume you know all these countries that well, what was your objective when you overstated your criticism against the Philippines/Filipinos?rnrnBest regards,rn

UCSF a lot of asians too!

this is disappointing to hear from a "political science student", if you're gonna be racist keep it to yourself. rnrnalso she wasn't just whining about people talking in the library in their cellphones. she was also whining/b*tching about how asian families live near her school. that's pretty offensive. rnrnand the calls in the library during the tsunami, i think that counts as a special occasion to talk loudly in the library since its almost counts as a major calamity.

the manner of talking on the phone in the library may have offended her but i think bringing the tsunami issue in her rant made her ver inconsiderate in these times. i was shocked. and it makes her st*p*d to not think before she speaks, or even make a video of it.

i'm a Filipino and i may have to agree with Berkeley. My kababayans lack discipline if one would compare it to other Asian people. Not even sure if Pinoys can be like Japanese who were still very disciplined despite the tragic event that happened in their country. And I'm sorry about this... :(

I don't consider it derogatory. She is just whining. I took a vacation in the Philippines last December. OMG, people talk on the cell phone or text inside the movie house DURING movie time. People talk on the cell phone in the doctor's office that I could still remember the entire topic of conversation. People text inside the restaurants as if they are not in good company. Texting texting texting like its the end of the world. And we are just talking about cell phone and texting manners of the Filipinos, we are not talking about queueing or falling in line yet but let us not go there for now. BTW, that lady should have exempted the Japanese. Obviously, she referred to Mainland (not HK) Chinese.
