(SPOT.ph) There's a lot people don't know about Army Navy. Sure, the burritos are good, the fried chicken stellar, and the iced tea totally refreshing, but then there's the "concrete" wall which is actually a mix of cement and recycled Styrofoam. It keeps the area cooler, reducing the need for air-conditioning. The ceilings are reused wood and the metal tables upcycled from retired bowling lanes. They're overlooked details that nonetheless confirm the mission that this proudly local franchise stands for. It's something they do instead of talk about.

But for all its ecological propositions, Army Navy, which opened in 2009 and has over 60 branches nationwide, has one inadvertent duty: to promote overeating because it's simply too difficult to get just one thing. The latest trap is the Bacon Breakfast (P140), a Pinoy-pleasing plate of garlic rice, a fried egg, a piece of longganisa, and strips of bacon. Lean bacon gives it added crunch-though still very meaty-and the sausage, which is more savory than sweet, feels more like chorizo. The egg is cooked runny, lathering creaminess into your sinangag. The breakfast is served any time (and in some branches, 24/7), thank goodness.

Fiesta on a chip

 

The new Nachos (P95) adds swagger to the formerly plain tortilla chips. A load of cheese, salsa, and jalapeno peppers crank up the flavors of this Mexican favorite. In a restaurant frequented for its quesadillas and tacos, it's a dish that's definitely overdue.

 

It’s easy to fall back on Army Navy favorites, but there’s are other delicious, sleeper contenders. The Querida Mia Verde (P215) is their vegetarian answer to the bestselling chicken version. It’s a lettuce-filled number packed with cilantro, mozzarella, cheddar, bell peppers, onions, jalapeños, and tomatoes. The Freedom Toasts (P99/each), for instance, are soft two-inch cubes in the softest brioche formulated especially by Army Navy. The Classic Maple is heavenly with cinnamon while the Blueberry flaunts the flavors of breakfast. If you judge a restaurant by how they prepare their quieter hits, then Army Navy should be pretty relieved.
