"I do not want you to be a genius, I just want you to be the best you can be!" shouts stage actress Rebecca Chuansu in Chinese-inflected English, calling to mind the supposed parenting style of "Tiger Mothers." Chuansu plays Suyuan Woo, one of the "Joy Luck Club mothers" who forces her daughter to practice the piano in hopes of nurturing a prodigy in Repertory Philippines’ production of the "The Joy Luck Club." A play by Susan Kim and adapted from the best-selling novel of the same title by Amy Tan, the production runs from February 4 to 20 at Onstage Theater, Greenbelt 1.

Directed by Anton Juan, the play is headlined by Pinky Marquez, Joy Glorioso, Frances Makil Ignacio and Rebecca Chuaunsu as the mothers, with Ana Abad Santos, Lily Chu, Jenny Jamora and Cris Villonco playing the American-born daughters. The play tells the story of four Chinese immigrant women and their complex relationships with their daughters who together find it hard to bridge the cultural gap between them as their daughters try to adapt to an American way of life.
