(SPOT.ph) The colorful world of Theodor Geisel a.k.a. Dr. Seuss is the setting for Seussical, a musical that blends elements from the famed storyteller's classic tales with a particular emphasis on Horton Hears a Who. The Tony-nominated play is written by Tony- and Oscar-award-winning writers Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and adapting it to the local stage is the Repertory Philippines Children's Theater, which for the first time, opted to produce a "non-mainstream" show.
In a flurry of elaborate costumes and flamboyant sets, Horton the Elephant comes to life and so does his predicament-protecting his newfound friend Jojo and his teeny, almost-invisible Whoville world, and safeguarding an abandoned egg, all while facing taunts about his sanity. The seemingly simple story follows the bemused elephant as he and his friends discover love, faith, and imagination through themes kids will understand and adults can relate with.
Three sets of casts (including several child actors) will alternately perform in the four-month-long play. Arnel Carrion, James Stacey, Kawie Atwood, Robie Zialcita, and Rem Zamora play the mischievous narrator Cat in the Hat (as well as several other minor roles) while Oliver Usison and Nic Campos take turns giving life to Horton the Elephant. Young talents Noah Ramos, Nacio Samonte, Alessa Zialcita, and Nicolle Cojuanco take on the highly ingenious Jojo. Belter Bituin Escalante also makes her Repertory Philippines debut taming the role of Sour Kangaroo, a bitterly sour creature who dubbed Horton a fool for believing that people can live on a speck of dust; Pinky Marquez and Ampy Sietereales alternate with Escalante for the role.
Directed by Joy Virata, Seussical will run from August 13 to December 18 at Onstage Theater, Greenbelt 1, Makati City. Rows or entire shows can be purchased at a discounted price and special show times can also be arranged.
